The other day I found Game Informer's 2017 issue with the 100 best RPGs of all time. It's a pretty solid list. Everquest at #22, Chrono Trigger at #3. Their choice for #1 probably seemed like a good idea in 2017 but I feel like it hasn't aged that well.

Skyrim was 6 years old at that point. I don't think there was any significant aging to be done. I wouldn't put it there but I totally understand for some people it really fulfilled the role-playing part of RPG even if it didn't tell as good a linear story as some of the others. There's no denying how popular it has always been.

I don't generally like Japanese games outside of the classic console games like Mario 1/2/3, Zelda 1, and MGS 1. So that kills half that list and MMOs are so different that they shouldn't be ranked with single player games.

RPGCodex is a very old "no weebs allowed" wRPG site. They were there when Todd Howard was lying his ass off to hype Oblivion. They were there when Peter Molyneux was lying his ass off to hype Fable. They don't forget and they don't forgive. Also, I've probably played 90% of the games on their list and roughly agree with most of their rankings as the games were played on release (outside of a few games I didn't like at all and a few that I feel are missing).

wtf is X-Com doing on an rpg list?

I assume that "Shadowrun" means Shadowrun for Sega...as much as I love that game I don't think I would ever objectively put it on a top 100 list. It was ambitious as hell for the time but it has TONS of issues. I could maybe put Dragonfall or Hong Kong (or just cheat and collectively put all three HBS Shadowrun games as one entry) in a top 100.

I wouldn't put any Bethesda game on a top 100 except Morrowind, Skyrim being #1 even in 2017 is an absolute joke. Fallout 3 being ranked #12 while F:NV is #36 is an even bigger joke.

Final Fantasy Tactics doesn't belong on the list any more than X-Com does. Neither does Fire Emblem: Awakening, Tactics Ogre, or however many other turn based strategy games are on the list.

Hell I don't even agree with their top 10, I could spend a life age of middle earth picking apart a top 100.

Please post your personal 100 so we have something to compare their list to.

Yeah from a "role play" and story perspective, there really wasnt much in the way of story in Xcom, but you still took the role of a commander of the whole thing so IDK. Like Gavinmad Gavinmad said, where the fuck do you draw the line?

I would say FF:Tactics is more of an RPG than Castlevania:SOTN is.

That list is weird.

I'd say the opposite. These terms are so nebulous and bias is really a moot point. All that matters is the game better then the one in front of it. Skyrim being 1 is laughable, but I can see it being the introduction to rpgs for many a younger or casual

#1 today has to be Cyberpunk 2077 with the patches + expac. It is very close to a fully realized cyberpunk RPG presented in an extremely slick format.

Agreed on FO3/FONV. Xenosaga 1 being ahead of Xenogears is my own bone to pick with the list. Xenosaga 3 was easily the best game of that trilogy, isn't ranked, and still wasn't as good as Xenogears. For pure influence, EQ and UO probably should have been top five.

Regardless, Game Informer's editors have their opinions and they won't jive with everybody else, like all "top list" creators out there.

Wonder what type of weight/scoring system they used to work out list placement. This was a project all the editors participated in.

They ever add a third-person mode? That was the thing that warded me off of really getting into it at launch. That and the issues. Nothing like spending a lot of time creating a character that you'll never actually get to see or look at in the game. The fuck?

Total agreement. Game is a 10/10 in every area imo.

Top three have to be Cyberpunk, Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring. It's been a great few years for RPGs.

It's notable that the 2017 list had some fairly old games towards the top like FF6 which was 20 years old at that time. I think we only just have the tech to do justice to the scope of a game like FF6 in 3D and surpass it.
