I thought it was mainly Italy who invaded Greece anyway. Germany only came in to bail Italy out when the invasion failed.

The Russians would love to pry Greece away from the EU but

1) right now the Russians have money problems of their own
2) the Greeks don't want to leave the EU. They don't even want to leave the Euro currency
3) the Greeks need the money to pay back loans from the Europeans and the US, so any money Russia did hand over would in effect end up in banks in Washington, Berlin and Brussels
4) without undertaking economic reforms the Greeks will be just as unable to pay back the Russians as they are everyone else, and it's the reforms that the Greeks don't want to do

IIRC there's another crunch deadline coming at the end of next week, with the Greeks having to persuade a sceptical EU that they have a viable plan to dig their economy out of the pit that doesn't involve claiming billions in war reparations. Sooner or later you get the feeling this will all end spectacularly badly.

well it's straight to a point though, the west wrote off germany's debt when suddenly they wanted germany to be strong again, now germany won't write off greeces debt.
Yeah.... buuuuuutttt...

Greeks ain't Germans. They just ain't. Last time Germans had this particular problem they started slaughtering the French. Greeks can't really even manage to kill themselves.

There is what you might refer to as a gap in collective competence.

LOL, Greece...

Greek govt revises statement: Will issue to Syrian refugees | protothemanews.com

Government spokesman Gavriil Sakellaridis on Tuesday afternoon first announced that the leftist Greek government intended to issue "travel documents" to Syrian refugees that have requested asylum in Greece, in the wake of a massive influx of irregular migrants over the last three months onto several Greek islands.

Less than two hours later, the government took back the statement and said instead that "all necessary documents" will be issued, rather than the earlier "travel documents".

In a couple of bad signs, one UK bookmaker is no longer accepting bets on Greece leaving the eurozone this year, while the Financial Times reports Greece has asked the IMF to delay their loan repayments, but the IMF has said no.

The next set of deadlines for Greece:

17 Apr ?1b redemption
24 Apr as things stand, expected to run out of cash
Apr end ?1.7b payment due for public wages & pensions
8 May ?1.4b redemption
12 May ?779m IMF repayment
11 May Eurogroup meeting
15 May ?1.4b bill redemption
20 July ?3.5b bond redemption due

Another step closer to the cliff edge:

The Greek government has ordered a mandatory transfer of cash reserves from state-owned enterprises to its central bank, in a desperate bid to gather enough cash to remain solvent. Citing "extremely urgent and unforeseen needs", the government issued the emergency decree which will also apply to all local government bodies.

...the decree could now help the government meet its monthly ?1.7bn wage and pension bill, averting a default on its own citizenry.

How are there still any Greek politicians left alive, how have the citizens of Greece not rounded them all up and threw them off the highest cliff into the ocean.

It's a good job the banks we've just spent the last seven years bailing out weren't stupid enough to lend $360 billion to them, because it would be awful if people who actually did work had to spend the next seven years bailing the rich out again.

Sadly the USA is getting this way as well. We have half our population getting government assistance now. The whole world wants to be entitled.
You seem like someone who knows the facts. Tell us more.

I'm gonna require a citation on something as ridiculous as half the population getting government assistance.

Also by government assistance we aren't going to try to use Social Security, Obamacare or other such programs as a basis for an argument I hope. Because if that is the case then every American is on government assistance.

Sorry, it did include those programs. 35.4 are on a form of welfare/food stamps which is still incredibly high. I can link the CNN report if I have too but it is pretty easy to find.

That is much higher then I thought. Though a lot of that is medicaid. I understand people frustrated about tax dollars going to so much welfare. My biggest problem is the subsidies and tax breaks given to companies so they can make that extra billion. People want to actually work here IMO.

Close to 60% of the people on Food Stamps work. Sounds like we need wages to rise. Better tell those corporations that have been making record profits to stop fucking their workers over. That would go a long way in getting the economy jump started again.

I have problems with people that suck off the system in entirety. I have bigger problems with idiots that lump hard working people getting a small benefit in with them.
