I'm for reasonable ownership for home defense, hunting, and hobbyists.

I'm against people who fetishize guns or think they need home arsenals to defend themselves against the gubmint and/or because freedom. Those people are potential dangers to everyone around them, me included.

I think there is a difference between being against people who fetishize guns/have arsenals/etc and being against their right to do that.

I don't think you can demonstrate that those people are a "potential danger to everyone around them" more than anyone else.

Yeah, and she didn't do shit. Anyone with $1500 can get everything they need to have a mass shooting. I think the basement hoarders are a little weird, but not inherently more dangerous than anybody else.

Yeah, and she didn't do shit.
That's actually the problem. She was neglectful of those she let be in proximity to her collection. Therefore she represented a danger to those around her. It's similar to leaving a loaded gun in proximity to a toddler.

What is the argument against having a national registry for guns and owners if all of our information is collected anyway?
backtrack, and consider pro-gun lobbyists think EXISTING gun laws are excessive.

National registry? step 1 of national confiscation.

They may have thought that before, but now that everyone knows that everything about you is stored somewhere, is that really an argument that can be defended in any sensible way?

For the most part, existing gun laws are excessive. I'd happily support much more restrictive laws on handguns though, assuming that those more restrictive laws came along with at least a semi-plausible plan for how to get existing handguns out of the hands of criminals.

The problem is that the anti-gun lobby is every bit as extremist as the pro-gun lobby. Although really that's the problem with every divisive political issue, everyone is divided into camps on the extreme polar ends of any given issue with zero interest of meeting in the middle.

Existing gun laws ARE excessive. What makes them even more grievous is how stupidly they are written all the time; arbitrary magazine size restrictions, banning the "scary" parts of rifles, banning random parts whose purpose can be easily circumvented with other legal parts.

Its akin to having a bunch of octogenarians who never wrote an email in their life, writing legislation on electronic surveillance and data aggregation.

What did he nail? He made a generalized statement with no evidence of anything. He basically said it's too hard so don't try.

huh? he made a general statement regarding that the only pull on the issue comes from extremist sides. that, to me, is why the debate rages on.

Who are the anti-gun extremists making the debate linger? Also, the argument against a national list has been shattered.
