It saddens me to see people use the term mentally ill as an escape goat for gun killings.

There are many people with mental disabilities. These can include Down's Syndrome, autism (not including assburgers), or general retardation from many outside factors. These individual have difficulties in reasoning, judgement, and control of their impulses. You don't see people selling them guns because we know they might have a lapse in reasoning and could harm somebody or themselves.

The people who commit most of these murders aren't mentally retarded. You can't ever screen for these people because they aren't sick. They are depressed, they hate life, and they believe it's the people around them that causes them to feel like this. Removing the ability to easily obtain a dangerous collection of automatic weapons can help protect the populace when these people finally break down.

All these mass killings were from perfectly normal people who had people or situations that caused them so much stress that they finally broke down and enacted revenge. How many more public killings would there be if all those teens and young adults who want to punish people because of their inability to communicate their emotions properly to people who can help them?

TL;DR
You can't screen people for mental illness that was caused from an environmental stressor. Hind sight will always be 20-20.
This is such a terrible, ignorant post.

When people are talking about "mentally ill" in these cases they aren't talking about the "mentally disabled", they are specificly talking about that whole second group of people you call "normal people with too much stress".

Go back to attacking how horrible American culture is, at least that had some kind of legs. You are clearly out of your depth on this subject.

Has the NRA gone insane? Waxing nostalgic about being able to bring your shotgun on a plane?
I'm fine with the NRA members being allowed to carry guns on a plane if every black and arab man can carry one on too. Don't see them allowing "terruists" getting their hands on some guns on a plane. I feel bad for all the arab and brown people of the US getting instantly stereotyped into violent terrorists. Hell, look at the Sikh temple slaying, they aren't even muslim thats how ill informed your redneck trash.
Not at all, they are simply pointing out that as little as 50 years ago, kids brought their own guns to school and we as a people carried guns onto planes without problems.

So what happened? Did guns change? No. Did our society and culture change? Yes. So are guns to blame? No. So who is to blame? I'll let you answer that.

So your plan is to talk about how great the 50's were?

Are you SURE you're not a Republican?
No, my goal is to discuss what changed in our society that turned guns from helpful tools that we taught all our kids how to use to INCARNATIONS OF PURE MURDEROUS EVIL THAT KILL ALL OF OUR INNOCENT SNOWFLAKES!!!!11111

Liberals, that's what happened. As our society/culture continues to devolve in the name of political correctness, affirmative action, welfare state, etc....things like mass rampages will continue to become more common.

Liberals have nothing to do with gun violence. The blatant disregard for human life is where the core of the issue is. People just don't respect each other anymore like they did years ago, guns or not, assholes run rampant in this country. We can make as many gun laws as we want and it's still not going to solve the issue of having respect for your fellow man and human life in general. It's unfortunate that our society in the US is going in the shitter and guns are just the easiest tool to take people out. Until this happens murders and mass shootings will continue to occur in this country.

I blame it all on video games, movie violence, heavy metal, and satanists. Oh, and rap music.

Gun control in the capacity that the US government is willing to try/enforce is an international joke.

Instead of asking the hard questions like, "What about our culture is driving people to these ends?" or "Why is it that we try to enact one-size-fits-all laws across such a massive, diverse and striated county?". Instead of being critical with ourselves with the intention for positive change, this country is just spinning it's tires in a pig sty. Just like with our economy. Just like with our education system, health care system and everything this country used to excel at.

This issue is a perfect microcosm for how fucked this country is. Media shills who manufacture soundbites into a false dichotomy between caricatures of a this-or-that system. We make knee-jerk reactions to satisfy the vocal majority of bush league citizens with no concern between a systems validity or logical application.

We are a dress rehearsal for Idiocracy.

You mean all those things that foster equality and actually reduce crime rates in general?

I'm not a sociologist, but it seems to me that part of the problem we have is that since the mid 80's both parents need to work to maintain a 'middle class' lifestyle leaving kids to be raised by other people or worse, no one.

"It takes a village to raise a child" but there is no village anymore.

Beyond that, there is a general lack of community and people retreating into 'silos'. We no longer rely on others in our geographical community in any significant way. Most people I know don't even know thier neighbors beyond knowing thier names and waving as they pass by, if even that. People on the road, or at the grocery store are just in the way of you getting what you want to get done and retreat back into your silo and sit back down in front of the tee vee or your computer screen. Look at most new construction, the houses fill the entire lot, no yards, no 'front porch' culture. Nobody gives a fuck about anybody else other than what they can do for them. Human interaction for alot of people is reduced to canned politically correct milquetoast scripts developed at some corporate head office.

I was talking to my dad the other day about this and he was saying when he was a kid he couldnt get away with shit because his parents would know about it before he got home. People knew one another and looked out for one another. Treating strangers with respect was expected. For whatever reason it's not like that anymore, maybe it is because we dont rely on people around us outside of our close circle of family and friends for anything in any direct sort of way.

I work in retail and people are fucking assholes. Politeness, respect seems to be lost. People expect to get their way by shouting and demanding and lying. I see it all the time. Talk about a culture of entitlement. I talk to people who have been in business for a long time, they say it diddnt used to be that way. Why did it change? What have we lost?

When people try to blame video games I think of the anonimity of the internet and how it allows people to be gigantic douchebags to one another with zero repercussions. If you dont know what I'm talking about, try hopping on xbox live sometime. Sure those are kids, but they have zero fucking respect for anyone or anything.

Does this cause people to blast a bunch of six year olds? No, not exactly, not directly. But it does cause a general malaise and spiritual sickness in this society. Look at our fucking political 'leadership'. Compromise has become a dirty word, finding common ground is subservient to entrenched positions cemented by monied special interests. Education and intellectualism is ridiculed, science and facts are dismissed unless they fit the narrative. There will be no rational national discussion on gun control. There will be no reasonable effective policy, because our society is disfunctional.

Merry fucking christmas.

So basically, the way it's been since, forever.

Humans suck man, that shit isn't generational, people just forget about the assholes from when they were kids.

You do realize crime has been dropping every single year for the past 30 years right? In that time the amount of guns in this country has sky rocketed and the majority of the states of legalized ccw.
