My guess is that when Riot switched to S3 they didn't just make everyone's Elo hidden. They made a new system/heavily modified the old system and the new system isn't divided up the same way and the numbers are all different. So when you saw your MMR in between getting railed by Morello you were surprised by both his girth and the knowledge that your rating didn't even have the same number of digits anymore.

My last objection is anecdotal. When I entered in my own handle it said I was 1717. That fits if the bottom of plat is still 1700 but from the absolute start of this season I've always believed that they mucked around with the numbers to make the threshold needed for gold and platinum lower.

As a skeptic you have a habit of creating more complexity than necessary. I prefer to invoke Occam's razor.

Edit:
If you want to observe the "Team MMR" then do this:
  • Go toLoLNexus
  • Click "Random Game"
  • Each team has a "Team MMR" (If the game is on the Russia server there won't be a Team MMR, try again)
  • Compare the Team MMRs with the players
  • Draw your own conclusions

3 Games I found that all have Diamond 1 or Challenger players, I have screencaps if you want more details but to keep this post clean I'll write it out:

Things to note:
  • In Game 1: Team 2 has a higher MMR with all Diamond players than Team 1 whom has the 1 Challenger player.
  • In Game 1: Team 2 has a higher MMR yet has an aggregate LP of 371 vs Team 1's 449 (Challenger Player is Equivalent to 169 LP).
  • In Game 3: Team 1 has an aggregate LP of 177 vs Team 2's 167 yet Team 2 has a higher MMR.
  • Between all the games there is a 350 MMR range between them
  • There is a 95 aggregate LP difference between Game2:Team2 and Game3:Team2, the MMR difference is 100
  • There is a 109 aggregate LP difference between Game1:Team2 and Game2:Team2, the MMR difference is 224

Another thing to note is that Purple side always has a higher Team MMR, this is to compensate for the perceived advantages of Blue Side. Thus, Team MMR isn't needed for just the Featured Games page.

When this kind of information has been available in the past Riot has stepped on it. If they aren't stepping on it this time after promptly stepping the last time than why? Normal games can also be featured as can Howling Abyss. None of these sites can provide MMR for those other game modes. If Riot has the ability to just mask the team MMR number why have they not done so for ranked? All the game modes that have the League system have a number that can be mined. All of the modes that don't have the League system do not have that number. If that number was tied to the League system and not the matchmaking system, given that the matchmaking system is an unknown, how would you know it was one thing and not the other?

I want to know what Xalara was talking about it.

It's a good point but doesn't invalidate anything I've said regarding Team MMR for ranked play.

Some possibilities:
  • The websites choose not to show a Team MMR for those game modes, even though it might be available.
  • I haven't personally seen a non-ranked game as a featured game, but assuming you are right, it could be possible the "goodness score" is not actually necessary for featured games. Instead, the "goodness score" is necessary to determine Blue and Purple teams and is why it would only show up for Ranked Summoner's Rift games. It is possible that Riot determined Normals would not require a goodness score to determine teams, especially in Blind Pick, since some perceived advantage of blue team is having first pick.

Edit:
I can't check right now but lolnexus has a "Featured Games" page which seems like it mines the Featured Games from the pvp.net client, I could be wrong, however, and maybe it is just lolnexus featured games. In any case, all games on this page for every region are Ranked Solo 5v5 games.

IMO the advantage for blue team isn't first pick, it's the way the map works etc. Maybe it's just me but whether it was DoTA, LoL or HoN (haven't played DoTA 2 and Smite is apples to oranges) it's easier playing from the bottom left base just due to the way lanes are set up etc.

Yea that's the primary advantage for sure. I notice the disadvantage of being purple much more when I'm playing Akali... hard to keep her on the screen sometimes!

Yeah, this argument is boring. Why can't you guys be arguing about like who is more OP, Vi or Nasus. Or like why Fizz is so stupid strong and so slippery (lol he's a fish derrrrrrrr). Or why Shaco is the most fun champion in the game.

Vi > Nasus. No idea how Fizz dodged the nerf bat. Rengar is more fun that Shaco.

Rengar forever. Or at least until they neuter him with his rework. Fizz didn't get nerfed because A.) He has a couple major counters in lane which the other assassins didn't have, and B.) he actually has to throw himself at the enemy team in order to carry and even though his pole vault is great for laning and dueling it doesn't really cut it as an escape tool in team fights. Unlike Zed, Ahri, kass mobility. Nasus is just an annoying fucker like Tryn or Vayne. They lose lane more often then not but the opposing team has a built in timer to beat them or the game basically becomes an auto loss.

I love me some Vi, I think I'm like 15-3 or something with her in Ranked. But I still honestly think Nasus is muuuuuuch stronger. I swear either Top lane or Jungle he brings so much for a team. Even if you shut him down you still have to finish the game somewhat early or else he still gets a ton of farm and a ton of items. Let's not even mention how Wither is still the most overpowered spell in the game (well, at least against adcs and melee bruisers)

Also, Rengar???? More fun then Shaco? What are you smokin! Maybe I just suck at Rengar but whenever he is free week I always play him a few times and besides the whole Ult > Triple Q 100-0 someone in 1/2 a second, he just feels really boring to me.

Hydra + BC + SoTD + Mobo boots. RANGOOOOOOOOOOO! I just have too much fun for it, and his ult is on like a 30-40 sec CD at max rank so I just run all over the map invisi killing everything ever.

Rengar is one of my planned supports for S4. I've been practicing his mechanics and watching a decent Rengar player in preparation (Twitch).

edit - absolutely cannot play a normal game without being matched against 3 or 4 diamond players in a small premade. Cannot be done.
