I liked the grunting. Maybe I just get tired of writing where the characters expound on everything they're thinking and doing, having him grunt his way through the film was refreshing.

The grunting was right on. It's Mad Max, not Eloquent Max.

He very well could have gone through the whole movie not saying a single line beyond, "Wrong way. The Citadel." Although I don't think the actor would have loved that.

Was mel Gibson in Road Warrior eloquent? No. Few lines and that was it.
Grunting max sounded like a wendol
Conveying different situations in these movies. Like Bisi, I'm really surprised there are questions or issues with the grunting. Mel says, "I only came for the gasoline" twice in RW. Hardy was no where near that level of sanity and social interaction in this movie. He was almost a wild animal.

Mel was what someone who intentionally wanted to live as a loner 'might' be like. Hardy is the tortured soul who has seen too much and hasn't coped well or been helped. Hardy is much closer to what a survivor of devastation would be like.

Yeah, I have to agree with everyone so far; I thought the grunting was great. It made him seem feral, like he had forgotten how to talk to people. As the movie went on, he slowly talked a little more and used different expressions rather than anger. Was pretty great.

Tarrantino/Smith definitely fall into this. Admittedly, it is one of the reasons why I enjoy their movies, but it has bled into quite a lot of other films as well without having that niche feeling that Tarrantino and Smith occupy.

I don't think he didn't want to tell her his name...but maybe he forgot what his name was... I don't know why they reworked the scenes of his wife and son being ran over... so maybe this was not the "same" Max...
