I understand the idea of it, it's a well defined manipulation tactic. But why call it "gaslighting". That's a real fucking stretch. I see what they're going for, but it's a real fucking stretch.
Ursula LeGuin has a book about it. I forget the name of it... but man it's a great book.

Where does the gas or the light come from?
This reminds me of an episode of Star Trek TNG where picard had been captured. The enemy commander had him chained to a wall and kept asking him how many lights were on the opposite wall. There were 3, but the commander told him there were 2, and he'd be punished until he said 2. Is that gas lighting? At least in that example the light portion makes sense.

They're trying to evoke the image of swamp gas flaring up. Will o' wisps. They're meaningless distractions which, if you try to follow them, all you do is get lost in the swamp.
But it's too far to go. It's a bad metaphor. It's extremely rare to see and only people who have ever walked through a swamp at night would really get it. If you have an old landfill nearby you can see it. They'll burn off methane sometimes.
I don't know what a better one would be. Some things are not ammenable to shorthand and shortcuts. That seems like half the problem with these shitfucks though, all they can do is think half a thought.

Nah, it's actually taken from the title of an old play. The plot is about a husband who fucks with his wife's mentals. It's called gas light though because she watches a gas light flicker.
