Look up the articles on silver splitters. It's actually getting very common. You have a wave of baby boomers still coming to terms with divorce, they've finished careers and kids and there's nothing functional left to keep them together so they separate finally to pursue their own interests.
Makes sense if you know or are in the families I know, just general situation and generational disposition/values. "Stay together for the kids" turned into late 40s and 50s with huge home equity bankroll for happiness and then recession necessitated staying together for financial stability. It's just getting to the point where they realize they have nothing in common, the home equity slush fund is gone but they've righted the ship enough income wise to sail apart.
