Reminds me - Last time I played I dug a basement (a hole really) to move all my chests underground.
All those villagers (about 8 of them) that were squatting my cottage fell in the hole and were chilling in the badly lit basement. And a zombie spawned. I had no idea villagers could be turned and died like an idiot. Also did not know zombies could pick shit up. One of the others that spawned before I lit up the place was wearing my diamond pants when I killed it. Unless he just dropped pants, but I doubt they drop diamond shit.

I have some basic enchant books (level 30 - unbreakable 3 and protection 3 I think) if you want to re-gear with basic enchants.

Yes please downgrade. The server is using Bukkit Beta build 1.5.1 (There is a Bukkit Dev 1.5.2 however, that's unstable at this time).
