My thoughts on this at HR19 so far, so not sure what else unlocks later. Using insect glaive, but thinking of swapping to gun lance. I used the same weapons in World. I like them.
Visuals
Good. Have a 4090. Get 100+fps. Only bugs I've encountered is some weird texture bug where it "zooms" into my characters eye or somesuch. There are flickering triangles, but if I move the camera around attempting to focus the triangles you could say, it shows a circle in the middle like I am inside the character head with flickering black triangles around it. Happens sometimes trying to cut corners where the camera gets close to the character. Odd bug, though didn't see it yesterday. Fixes itself if I log out to main menu and back again. Saw some streamers get it too, so thankfully not the GPU dying.
Party with people with the hunter horns though is particle insanity.
Gameplay
More monster hunter. Great, though as others have said here. Feels a bit easy so far.
Some things I miss, but don't know if they come later.
- Where are the chef cats making my food and a cantina?
- Is there a point to endemic life now? In Worlds it felt rewarding running around exploring new zones, during different times, both in regular and high rank since finding new things (like the "treasures") unlocked new foods and such. Quests from chef and so on. Then capturing things you could use to decorate.
- Capturing mobs in World and you could sometimes see them in the main hub. Nice touch, not here? Capturing also led to arena quests. Not sure if that is the case here?
- Progression quests for the different cat tribes, different classes to unlock? They all just streamlined?
Overall thoughts
I liked the main hub(s) of MHW far better than the scattered camps in Wilds. Large zones, but I don't feel the need/want to run around them and explore for things. Even looking around scouting for camps, with the "feel" of finding hidden areas. Now the maps look like they have the most advanced GPS system in history. Where everything is found immediately.
It's like they took feedback from the "I only want to hunt!" crowd, making the world feel far less ... worldish? Progress from regular to high rank in the zones in world, I spent lots of time just exploring, here it feels pointless? No need to find traces of enemies to be able to track them, they're GPS tagged even when they're just a ????
But then there is the strange thing of the "I only want to hunt!" crowd also go "There is no story in monster hunter, only hunts!" and skip every dialogue, but they add a story (with a main character that is very annoying). So they appear to have streamlined everything to get you to just focus on hunts and fast/easy progression while forcing on a story with constant "don't go there!" if you so much as attempt to go off the quest paths to look at something or pick something up.
I do like the game, but I liked the base game of World more. This feels less? Just like some things are missing. Unless they all come later.
