Some of the list is just dumb though. Mishra's Workshop is ok, but Library is not! Lets ban the green trigger creatures instead of Deadeye Navigator which is the problem with them to begin with. I don't particularly care for multiplayer formats in general since it's a totally different set of skills which are almost entirely meta and not actually magic related, but as a store owner I do like the format since it sells a lot of cards that otherwise wouldn't sell or at least not for the prices that they do.

In the eye of chaos is 50$, thanks EDH.

Library is just a money ban which I am totally fine with. The citp trigger creature bans are for more than just Deadeye (he wasn't even in print when I was playing). The format had stagnated in to people trying to cheat out primevil or sundering titans as quickly and often as possible cause it's so easy to do in an eternal format that is as typically slow as EDH.

This modern open was fun to watch. I have almost all of the cards to build that URW Nahiri deck, in foil.

Except that there are cards worth more than Library that aren't banned. Tabernacle is over twice as much and Shop is as well, while also being far more degenerate. Bazaar is also unbanned and nearly twice as much. So obviously it's not just a money ban.

The original EDH banlist is mostly just "Cards Sheldon Doesn't Like" which is defined as "Combo Cards that aren't green, and expensive cards Sheldon's playgroup doesn't have enough copies of for all their decks," and "Cards Sheldon lost to too many times." Which was fine, because in the beginning each playgroup had their own banned lists, as was the original intention. After it became an actual magic product line, Wizards really should have done a once-over of the list. Prime Time ban was the first time I remember the format really having a clash between folks being "strictly the official banlist" vs areas just having their own.

Friend of ours is getting into Modern and puts together a Tron list. We tell him best way to learn a format with so many decks is to just jump in. He plays a tourney today, after round 1 he texts us all:

"How come nobody told me about Stony Silence?"

Welcome to Modern, son.

Shop not being banned is pretty questionable, but tabernacle and bazaar aren't quite as universally good as library. That was really the issue, that given availability 100% of EDH decks would run it under all circumstances, but with it being 400$ or whatever stupid number it is it was better to just kick it out.

Workshop and Tabernacle being legal while Library isn't is indefensible. It's purely a factor of Library having *always* been expensive while Workshop and Tabernacle eventually outpaced in price because of constructed. The list started with a bunch of bullshit "value" bannings, and hasn't bothered to keep pace ever since.

Like how Chromatic Lantern is a 9 dollar card instead of a 25 cent card?
Yeah, this sort of thing. Also, what the format does for legendary creatures, especially foil versions. We sold a Foil copy of Scion of the Ur-Dragon the other day for like 60 dollars. Would never happen without Commander!

Wizards doesn't have control of the ban list. It's going to be one of the interesting conflicts as time goes on, since it competes with modern as the 2nd biggest source of sales behind standard.

As far as ban list whining goes.... the list seems fine, and evolves when needed. There's plenty of cards to play with that don't involve cheating and blinking prime time over and over. I've honestly only encountered deadeye like... twice out of nearly 1k commander games, and it didn't win them the game that's for sure. I'm certain I would have met more bouncy prime times in those 1k games if he wasn't banned.

Alright, So i'm finally giving in and starting to play Magic again.

I need someone to catch me up on latest trends I haven't played seriously since Lorwyn.

I have an initial starting budget of $500 cash and zero cards. I want to start playing standard and eventually work myself into a nice modern collection by picking up cards that are dropping due to rotation.

I'll probably hit the FNM/local scene for a bit then hit these weekly tournaments I heard about.

Thinking of maybe playing something called G/B Seasons Past.

Any cards I should be on the look out for and others to avoid?

Be a bit hesitant on buying into the decks using Dragons of Tarkir/Magic Origins power-mythics, the expensive ones (except Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, Collected Company, and Kolaghan's Command) are pretty much useless in Modern, so they're going to crater a bit post-rotation (Which is in ~4.5months). Every once in a while, a Japanese player tries to make Dragonlord Ojutai "a thing" in Modern, but it hasn't really seen any kind of widespread adoption or success. I'd also be hesitant on buying into blue in general, because a ton of its equity is wrapped up in Jace, Vryn's Prodigy; Kaladesh is going to need some pretty damn sweet blue cards to hold up the color when JVP rotates.

If you're interested in the B/G Seasons Past deck, look into the B/G "Aurora" Deck Sam Black played at the last major standard event, it's an evolution of the deck that has better pressure for opposing planeswalkers (as planeswalker-heavy decks are doing very well right now, between G/W tokens and B/W or B/R/W Control), and a hilarious end-game of tutoring for and casting its singleton copy of The Great Aurora. The Aurora/Seasons Past build will also have you picking up some of the better staple creatures of the format that will be legal for over a year moving forward. Kalitas and Tireless Tracker are value-grinding cards, and Sylvan Advocate is going to be a competitive staple for his entire standard run, unless Kaladesh randomly turns it into a 4-turn format.

I agrree with Kuro; definitely start with green staples, seems like the backbone color of current standard. Sylvan Advocate & Tireless Tracker aren't going anywhere for a while.

If you want to play competitively I'd stay away from the B/G control decks. If you want your cards to last a long while take a look at the cores of decks that are not rotating. Personally I'd go with either GW Tokens or 4C Rites. The core of those decks are not going to go anywhere, and I personally think WotC is going to regret printing Cryptolith Rites.

Cryptolith Rites is definitely a card that is either busted or pure garbage, and it currently leans on the side of busted. What horrors will abound once Languish rotates, if we don't get a replacement 4 mana "conditional" wrath.

And yeah, the B/G deck isn't the best competitive choice. I mostly just talked about it since it's what he said he liked the look of so far

Yeah for me the two cores that I think will be competitive until BFZ rotates are GW tokens with: Nissa Voice of Zendikar, Oath of Nissa, Sylvan Advocate, Gideon Ally Zendikar, and Archangel Avacyn. Then in the rites decks it's: Cryptolith Rites, Eldrazi Displacer, Duskwatch recruiter, and whatever busted ETB effect cards you want.

Cryptolith Rites will lose CoCo, but busted mana is still busted mana.

I'll take a look at some other options but I'm not terribly worried about being super competitive until the rotation happens. Just need something to play while I hustle.

My true love was extended and that's called modern so I want to build up a card pool for that.
