So....someone told Fox that they thought the shooter had autism. Fox's response now is that we need to have a conversation that involves aspergers.

Cam - can you weigh in here with some expertise?
Why, do we need an expert on people faking autism spectrum disorders? Cause he's not an expert, I'd barely even call him an amateur.

And you'll end up with this

Ts1Sol.jpg
Please tell me thats a shoop. I mean, it's America so I know it's probably legit, but god damn.

So the mother wasn't even a teacher at the school, would really like to know what reason he had to drive there and go all Rambo like that if it had no connection to his parents.

We'll find out I hope. The police said they found "good evidence" as to the how and why he did what he did.

Well I mean if I was a parent with children at that school, I would sure as hell be glad that their safety was in the hands of some stupid fucking gash who probably doesn't even know how to fire the fucking thing.
Pretty sure all Israeli women (and civilians in general) are trained and are officially part of the national military, as active duty for a period of time, and then on inactive duty for most of their adult lives.

Is this not the case?

Judging from the sloppy way she has the weapon slung, and the fact that she has a purse obstructing what is most likely her dominant hand, I'd say if she ever had any training, it was either really half-assed or a long time ago.

@hodj shhhhh. let him keep going.
Ok so the 'gash' comment was unnecessary, because I obviously wouldn't have made a reference to gender if it had been a dude.

Those statistics are all well and good, but the statistics I'd like to see are if stabbing deaths, blunt-trauma deaths, explosive deaths, etc. are higher in other "rich" countries. I'd like to see if the statistics support the whole, "If you take away guns, crazy people will use other means!" shit.
Only one crappy source here comparing US and UK, but...

US non firearm murders: 4553. That's about 1.46 per 100,000 people.
UK non firearm murders: 511. That's about 0.91 per 100,000 people.

I cannot find anything showing other countries though, and it's meaningless without more countries to compare it to.

A lot of hard to fix issues that I see no solution to but that doesnt mean efforts and discussions shouldn't be used and explored. Gun rights activists try their damn hardest to ignore any issue that involves guns. Hell, I agree with Araysar so much that usually i dont post because he's already defended my position much better than I could. That doesn't mean i don't think you are wrong now Araysar on certain points. I agree that mental health should be the first place to explore but how many people wouldn't turn in their kid because 'jimmy's just a quiet boy but he wouldnt do anything'? We hear the same shit all the time because people dont care about others, this is a me first society and everyone's got something better to do than teach their children, find out the issues, or even check in on their kids from time to time. 'I have a life too!' bullshit. Are we going to test every kid when they hit 12 years old? What about late bloomers to the 'crazy farm'? Should definitely be a discussion but not the only one.

Im going to start with the problems with the gun control side though. There is NO reason for armed cops at a school. That is a definition of complete failure as a society. No other country does this and we really dont have the need. There is no factual evidence that a cop would be anything more than victim #29. Cops sitting on the side of the road are what pays that area's local budget. That isn't going away ever. Much like the cockpit of our aircraft, a form of door security is the best bet. Of course we shouldnt have windows near it either and dont make it just for the front door. If he cant get in, then at least he cant shoot kids like 'fish in a barrel'. If he shoots kids at the playground, leaving school etc, at least they can run and try to hide. People that want to kill can but there are ways to make it harder in a certain area.

Ok, now to the gun people. I love guns and own guns first. The stupid, tired, regurgitated without any fucking facts argument about criminals coming into your home with a gun and that's your defense needs to go. Feels like Im watching TJ Hooker with this type of defense. There is no documented rash of home invasions in the US. No criminals are sitting at home just waiting for your guns to be taken away!!!!No one is taking your guns so breathe again please. It is an intentional redirect nothing more. Any type of gun control becomes this mindless, 'yer takin me gerns!!!' retort that serves no viable purpose. Guns wont go away but does that mean there shouldn't be discussion on better background checks, charging people who dont safeguard their weapons with a felony, etc. Why are these issues not a viable conversation? Why should the heaviest armed nation by a MASSIVE degree just go on with business as usual? Is that not a copout? Heres some factshttp://www.reuters.com/article/2007/...34893820070828

It doesnt look like guns are going anywhere does it? Lets stop trying to compare us to the swiss, fins, etc. It's a wash. Even if they were close(and they arent), could we really compare? The swiss have no military machine going around the world enforcing capitalism. That's us! No other country spends so much of their budget on weapons.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...y_expendituresIt's not even close is it? Who has the largest popuation in jail?http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/23/wo....12253738.html. Am i completely going off on a tangent of unrelated stuff now? no

This country is awash with guns. Haus, you are a moron. Arm enough of the good guys?! We buy over half the guns made worldwide every year! The good guys have enough guns to arm a platoon of soldiers! We are a violent country that gratuitizes death while fearing it at the same time. The world is right about us and should be wary. This country is a bunch of sanctimonious, gun-toting morons that is a threat to every other nation on earth. We have the best weapons. We have the most weapons. And that is part of the problem. Do we love anything more than violence and the ability to inflict it in this country?

Drones and their missiles dont kill Pakistani extremists. The guy sitting on base does. But can he kill those 'soldiers for islam' without hs drone or it's missile? No. We CAN do things differently. We can have meaningful discussions about how to stop these tragedies. They may not stop but dong nothing hasnt worked very well has it? We didn't do shit after Columbine did we? Didnt do shit after Virginia Tech. Didn't do shit after the theater slaughter. We did do shit after 9-11. It sends a very powerful message to everyone that murdering our own is unacceptable unless we do it ourselves and then it's an encouraged rite of passage. fixing our mental health system is one part of the equation. Finding a system to restrict some of the rediculous ease of weapon use should be another.

From what I've read this morning, shooter was a honor roll nerd and goth kid who, during high school, held LAN parties with the tech club. His mother was not a teacher at the school but police believe that shooter went to elementary school there himself. Also, his brother reportedly told police that shooter had a personalty disorder.

There are very few gun owners on this board that are not willing to have a rational discussion. I shoot on a weekly basis with some of the most skilled ppl in the country and none of them have a problem with rational discussions. I would have zero problems with longer waiting periods and more inclusive background checks. I do not like the idea of a national registry, but if that's what it took I would be ok with it. I would be ok with measures put in place involving gun safes or even biometric saftey systems (if costs can be kept down). I have tens of thousands of dollars worth of firearms and reloading equipment, you bet your ass its all locked up.

The reason we can't have this discussion is the legislators that want to put controls in place don't have a clue what the laws already are and don't know a damn thing about firearms in general. We end up with laws like the AWB that essentially banned the scary looking parts on a rife. No bayonete lug (wtf), no flash hider, no barrel shroud etc etc. it also limited us to ten round mags, which really doesn't do a whole lot. And we can't forget "the shoulder thingy that goes up".

There are idiots on both sides of the argument, lets just make sure they aren't the ones being heard.

Is this not the case?
Correct, that woman looks to be in her late twenties at least which means she has had at least 18 months of service in the Israeli military.

Thorne, great post and I agree that politicians are fairly knee-jerk mainly because it looks good. Gavinrad, where do you live that has home invasions weekly? Sounds like you need to get out of the ghetto more.
