No one is arguing about the better offensive player (though LeBron doesn't have a scoring mentality) were talking best overall player.

The difference is that Lebron is Top 4 All-Timeright now.Durant has thepotentialto make that Top Tier a 5 person tier, but we're a few years away from that discussion, at least.
I think Durant's defense is underrated, though. I think the main difference there is Lebron does it more consistently and Durant does it more in spurts. I love that both of these guys are improving every year, though. They'll continue to push each other to get better which is great for the game.

This is written by a Thunder homer, but a decent write up on some of the defensive metrics comparing the two:

Durant the defender, and closing the gap on LeBron | Daily Thunder.com

KD might as well be LeBron's equal this season. It's just been one year though, LeBron has been crazy elite for 7 seasons. Coincidentally though (and this is nothing more than coincidence), 24 was the age LeBron really took his jump. That's the same with Durant and last season. Just something to think about.

Anyway, I hope Durant keeps it up. The more seasons we get to see two of the best to ever play the game the better.

Oh man yes. My parents just surprised me with tickets for the Heat vs Suns tomorrow! OMG. So excited.

And Durant isn't? He could go down as the best offensive player in the history of the league. He put up a 50-40-90 split at age 24. He is just entering his prime, let us see what he does with it.
That's what we were saying with Lebron, and he came through. I'm just not there with Durant yet, but you're right, he could and let us see

I've been looking for a better way to use defense in one of my formulas. I should look up how they calculate Defensive Win Shares. The article is interesting...the problem with all these defensive metrics is that they're great at helping to put a picture together, but they don't stand on their own very well.

It's very true. I like on/off court stats over a very, very large sample size to have an overall view of a player's defensive capabilities, but it's not very precise. That article points out that LeBron isn't doing so well there this season, but that isn't true for his career as a whole and I don't think anyone would say he doesn't help his team defensively. So yeah, just can't jump to conclusions with this stuff.

The opponent PPP stats shown are pretty neat though. My gut feeling to that data for this season is simply that Durant is trying a lot harder this year. But then again, it's pretty amazing to me that LeBron could "not try hard" and put up the numbers he does.

I would eat that PPP stuff up if I was a coach/GM, but it doesn't help with what I'm trying to do.
As a coach, though...it tells you where to attack and who your guy should be defending. Some of that is obvious, but we usually just say Bruce Bowen was a great defender...we don't talk about if he was great against isolations, post-ups, or in screen-and-roll situations. Those numbers could get way out of whack just by a bad coach playing his guys out of position, though. I want the job where I put all these scouting reports together. :p

So with the PPP, does it just evaluate when that player is on the floor? Or does it take into account who they're actually guarding at the time? Or does it just go by the player they were assigned to guard (your pg vs the opponents pg)? I've seen the situational defensive stats like that before, but have never been able to get an answer to how they're calculated

Holy crap what an awesome game to go to. LeBron was fucking amazing lol. 37/9/5. It was like his own mini dunk contest and he had a monster 4Q. I had so much fun.

Game was good. It could have gotten ugly with the 12-0 start, but the Heat adjusted the defense and fought back into the game. Would have been a very entertaining game to see in person.

I've been saying since last year that Lebron is Top 4 all-time. But now Lebron says it and it's news? Pfffffft...

Lebron's game winner tonight was sick. GS was dumb to leave so much time on the clock.

On the other hand, that game in Houston was an officiating embarrassment. Well earned "win."

LeBron had a pretty sick back to back, ya. Curry was on fire 4Q too. DWade looks like he is sitting out the All-Star game. I really wonder if Wade's health will cause LeBron to leave Miami

That made me sad. The game seemed like a lost cause when the Warriors were down 21. Then come back for the lead and lose because you didn't double team LBJ.

A last second fade away long jumper? You give him that shot and you shake his hand when he drains it. He'll miss that more than he makes it. It's just tough luck there.

Yeah, there's really not much you can say about that other than good job. Iguodala is arguably the best on the ball defender in the league, and he got a good contest on a 27 foot fadeaway 3. Lebron is just a beast.

His quote after he was told that was his 8th gaming winning shot was awesome:

"Eight of them, huh?" James said. "Not too bad for a guy who isn't clutch."

8? Man, why isn't he trying harder earlier in the game to keep his team out of those situations?
(Is what I would say if I was on ESPN.)

So, how deep does the draft go this year now? It seems like we're up to about 12 potential All-Stars that might declare for the draft. I'm kinda hoping all this "character" crap causes Smart to drop to the Raptors, but I'll be surprised if he doesn't get drafted in the lottery.
