The problem with both of those games is they felt like a massive fetch quest. Mario64 had, what? 120 stars. Simple. But when you have 1000 stars or 99 billion kurok seeds? Fuck that. I have better things to waste my time on.

Yeah Odyssey was the only 3D Mario game that I didn't 100% (i.e. find all the stars/shines/whatever in). I got to however many were needed to play the last level and promptly turned it off never to be played again. The other 600 (or whatever) stars, yeah, I don't know why all of that was necessary. Considering how many of the stars are "multi-stars" that give you 3 or 5 more, the number of stars to acquire is actually a lot lower than what it appears. And yeah a ton of them can just be bought. It's all super weird. I guess they wanted to make a Mario game that takes ages.

As for Korok Seeds, I've literally seen people comparing BOTW favorably to Elden Ring and saying BOTW is better because it has so many side-dungeons to get Korok Seeds so you never run out of things to do. And I'm like... ER's zillion side-dungeons have actual weapons and spells in them that don't break

Ah whatever

I agree there but the only thing I really have left to finish that I'm playing on my switch is Persona 5 and Octopath traveller 2. Not sure it really matters that much at this point.

I've already beaten X on my Wii U, game was amazing until you could fly then the challenge and fun exploring disappeared.

Ill pick it up again probably but I can wait. Never played the Xenosaga series though.

I could play it on my Steam Deck but my backlog and lack of time have me waiting to see if it's ever remastered, however unlikely.

Gonna disagree with you about XCX's flying. For me the game got kind of tedious UNTIL I unlocked flying, then it was awesome. I was zipping all over the place, exploring places I couldn't get to before, and it felt so much more lively and open at that point.

Forget Xenoblade and Xenosaga, what we need is XenoGEARS 2D-HD remake. I'd say "with some of the cut areas restored" but after Demon Souls Remake I know that'll never happen with anything I like. Xenogears remains the best Xeno game to date IMO and probably the best pre-2000 RPG I've played, and it still has a pretty sizable fanbase. At this point going back to it is rough, though, because it's basically Gen 1 3D on the PS1 and really doesn't look very good anymore.

The Xenosaga trilogy is good but it was also a product of its time. I loved it when I was a late teenager and still had some optimism for life, plus I thought it was leading into the events of Xenogears (it isn't, despite seemingly copying every year and location from Xenogears Perfect Works Episode 1). The trilogy definitely made me feel things back then. Now I'm not sure, it might just be another 2000's era series that isn't very playable now due to QOL advancements in the genre.

XCX is a whole different ballgame. I played it through like a year or so ago I want to say, holiday season 2023 maybe, and I still don't actually know how I feel about it. The giant mechs made me think/hope it'd be another Xenogears, but it's more like a single-player MMO where I constantly felt underpowered compared to the foes (until some point where it suddenly flipped and everything was too easy). The story wasn't very interesting, but I liked the alien world and how interesting some of the biomes were.

Xenoblade 1 kind of exists in a bubble for me, it's a good RPG but I don't know what it has to do with the Xeno series at large. Like it has no real shared themes with XG/XS/XCX, all of which have a ton of shared themes between them, so I'm not even sure why it has the Xeno name.

Haven't played through Xenoblade 2 or 3, as XB1 just didn't interest me enough to continue with that series. However I did try XB2 for a couple of hours and liked what I saw. The music is very Xenogears and the story has some of the same beats too. I'd probably like XB2 if I ever get it (more like if I ever have time for it).

TLDR: What we really need is a Xenogears 2D-HD

Played Xenogears a couple years ago on my steam deck. Obviously a great game but the gameplay itself was kind of meh. I'd rather they do a reimagining of the game like was done with FF7 but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Xenoblade 2 (and Torna the DLC full game) ended up being my favorite of the series but it, like all the Xenoblade games, took forever to get going before really grabbing my interest.

I'd finish those 2 if I was you.

Is the next Zelda even in production yet? I can’t remember if they’re running two Zelda teams or not but the last one came out last year right?

We have an original Switch and an OLED that I got for my kids (mostly) but neither one of them have been interested in them for years; my son isn't gaming much and my daughter is mostly doing IPad/Roblox. I love the Nintendo esthetic, though, the look and feel of the console/UI. Ever since the Wii we have gotten at least one of every gen (even a Wii U). So someone (cough) will have a desk with a Switch2 on it.

Last one came out like a month ago. I think they have a team running the “big” ones and a different team running the ones that are closer to the classic top down games

Oh no wait the last Zelda was the Zelda centric 2d one I forgot all about that. So probably somewhere 2026 best case scenario?

2027 seems likely for the next Zelda. As far as Nintendo's three tentpoles go, we'll probably get a Metroid along with the new system, a Mario in 2026, and a Zelda in 2027.

Yeah if you watched the credits…or looked it up… the Zelda, Zelda games - EoW was not very Nintendo in house centric.

They never really publicly say - but there is /always/ a mainline Zelda and Mario in production. But they obsess over it so much, they actually have been less obsessing over Mario - they have kinda given into its a formula and keep to it with a splash of gimmick - Zelda however…. We will see.

They need to NOT drop the BoTW open world adventure and just awe inspiring free world and danger. But they need to make sure they increase plot coherency and interaction - but not too much. Get dungeons back that are better than either BOTW or TOTK - and have some of them be “item puzzle” progression like the “classics”

This. BoTW and ToTK were games I enjoyed, but they never really felt like "Zelda" to me. Some sort of midpoint between the current design and A Link to the Past would be amazing.

The building stuff was eh, but it was and is a huge thing for autists around the globe - so I give them credit that it was not so much needed that people like me could use it, have fun get kinda creative and still not have any hinderance to the game- while also giving the special kids a insane unlimited machine playground.

Sky islands are dumb as was skyward sword - i hate the depths in TOTK but the sky islands were worse.

Also the “quest” line to “find” Gannon - leads you ALLL OVER THE DEPTHS and is like “where is he! Oh ho ho no he is not below at the castle!……yeah he is…yeah he is right where you think it is…yeah sorry.”

I want a Zelda that is more like Elden Ring dialed back to a 7 on difficulty with ER being a 10....I'd settle for a 5, but I wouldn't want to lose the increase in difficulty they achieved with BOTW and TOTK vs. say...skyward sword. Then I'd like them to take an art style from either a modern take on OoT or Twilight Princess. Puzzles. Dungeons. Bosses. Put that into an open world and toss away the fucking weapon durability. Maybe bring in some magic wands or such too. Consider grounding it some, which is tough because you're coming back from the borderline flight approach of BotW/TOTK. Maybe put in a hookshot or something.

I hate to say this but i would like a third person Metroid, but that's because I'm just very meh on console FPS.

Dust off some other shit though....Star Fox? Kid Icarus? Something new?

I'll get to Skyward Sword some time this year - it was at the top of my "things to finally get to" backlog when the year started. Now it's been totally superceded by Infinite Wealth, Black Myth, and Stellar Blade which all basically annihilate it.

I just want a 3D traditional Zelda that isn't brown with wolf controls like Twilight, isn't gimmicked like Majora, and has realistic visuals unlike Wind Waker. In short I'd just like another Ocarina with a decent story and memorable dungeons, and it's like nonexistent. Skyward is the closest I can get to that at this point, but once I got started... Fi wouldn't shut up, it took like 4 hours to reach an actual dungeon, and the motion controls are so bad that it's comical.

Why?

I'll play almost anything with the name Zelda on it, but you're totally correct that the last great Zelda was Ocarina of Time as far as open world Zelda games go. Majora's Mask felt more like a DLC of it since it was all the same engine and just a few new mechanics, and the timed gimmick was weird (though realistically you have all the time to do whatever since dungeons stop time and you have the ocarina to reverse or slow or speed up time).

I enjoyed Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom but they don't really tickle the nostalgia that was Zelda for me, and that's kind of the point since they're Myamoto's version of Skyrim from what he said. Skyrim's fine, but it's not what I want in Zelda really. I too would love an Ocarina of Time-like Zelda game, but honestly I'd be fine with a complete remake of the Ocarina of Time too, or a remake of A Link to the Past with the new cutesy graphics they used for Echoes of Wisdom or the Link's Awakening remake on Switch. They could also port A Link Between Worlds over and that'd be cool to play on a big screen too.
