Wii sold 100M+ units and the Wii U did less than 15M. There's absolutely nothing Nintendo could do with the Switch 2 (based on the info we already have) to cause that large a drop. Not even hiring away some Sony marketing retards to price the system would do it.

Switch 2 is a lot more like the transition from DS to 3DS, and I'd expect similar numbers (Switch and DS both roughly 150M units and the 3DS sold 75M+ which seems likely as a minimum for the Switch 2). I think it will be more like 100+M though, since the Switch 2 has the advantage of having ports of third party games. No third party support is what destroyed the Wii U, and the 3DS simply wasn't capable of running anything designed for PS/Xbox.

I'm 99% sure they won't have a single game in the pipe that I care about. All I want to know is the price and some info about how BC is going to work. It better not just be faster load times due to the new storage; they really need some sort of equivalent to Xbox's FPS Boost for older titles. Especially ones like Bayonetta 3 that targeted 60 fps and then struggled to get much above 40 with any consistency. Not sure how they'll fix it being ugly as shit without an actual patch though--when a game runs at sub-480p in handheld mode and still has to use dithering all over the place I don't think you can do much with just the backwards compatibility system.

I believe they mentioned BC in the first trailer. If they just put beefier stats in it with some improvements, like the controller mimicking a mouse, they could be interesting things.

Casual gamers aren't going to care about the Switch 2. It might not be as big a failure as the Wii U, but I bet it won't be far off. Every family I know has a Switch in the house. They're casuals who play Mario Kart, Mario Party, and maybe Zelda if they feel like playing a "real" game. Almost none of them are going to bother upgrading for something that isn't dramatically different (like going from the Wii to the Switch). Nintendo will get sales from actual gamers, but they aren't going to get all the casuals who bought a Switch to rush out and get a Switch 2.

You might be right... until Nintendo drops a Switch 2-exclusive Animal Crossing.

the switch 2 is rumored to launch with a shit load of previously unavailable games on nintendo, including

Elden Ring
Call of Duty latest and 2025
Forza Horizon 5
Flight Simulator 2024
whatever slop Ubisoft/EA are putting out

you throw in a Mario Kart 9, a new Mario Odyssey, Metroid Prime 4, and a few other first party exclusives and I could see people who only have a switch at home wanting one.

Yawn

Nintendo is for first party exclusives. No one is buying this for old other console games.

For us, yes, but we are a minority. Only about a third of console owners have more than one platform. I can't find good data on the exact distribution and overlap of console ownership, but there are a lot of people out there who didn't play these games anywhere else.

K so you think people that didn't buy a PS5 to play those will buy a switch 2 just to play them?

I don't think anyone is saying it won't sell at all, just that if there isn't a marked difference in content, then people aren't going to hurry. Like the PS5 pro.

I think it will increase Nintendo's share of sales to first time buyers, and some people will definitely upgrade. We had people in this thread re-buying switches for OLED screens. It's hard to know how the actual game experience will pan out until we get hands on it. I suspect it's more like a generational improvement than incremental, otherwise they wouldn't be doing this.

And we're now going from OLED back to LCD right? I mean it's not even strictly an upgrade?

I'm sure the population of people who care about OLED vs LCD (which I barely do as a lifetime serious gamer) is far smaller than those who can appreciate resolution, framerate, and detail upgrades. All that really matters at the end anyway is whether access to the games is worth the money.

Edit: Yes, that's the class of upgrade the PS5 offered, but it didn't have any exclusive software. (Exclusive within hardware generations of the same ecosystem.)

I don't think anyone's suggesting it will sell as many units as the Switch did. It's just weird that people are making Wii -> Wii U comparisons when it should be obvious that DS -> 3DS is much more appropriate (and only 50% over the lifetime, including an eventual OLED upgrade is being really conservative imo).

As far as I care Nintendo can fuck off until they release a new traditional Zelda or maybe another awesome Xenoblade game. I’ll also accept Castlevania if that series ever makes a return.

Switch 2 Pro sale numbers will be good when all is said and done. Obviously most people probably wont jump out and immediately upgrade until there is a need, which, I suspect, won’t be for some time unless this direct has some big surprises.

for what its worth - I haven't owned a console in years, primarily PC gamer, I wanted to get a switch now that my kids are 5 & 7 and didn't want to buy "old" switch, so i'm waiting for switch 2 with more capability but can also play the hits. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'm buying one. I could care less who doesn't. lol

I did enjoy my WiiU but even Nintendo didn't make use of the two screens well. The best game that made good use of it was ZombiU that I played at least.

Fatal Frame 5 and Xenoblade X used it really well too. BotW was clearly designed for the Wii U as well, but it seemed like they scaled it back once the Switch became the main platform.

Definitely buying a Switch 2 at release also. I've got at least a dozen Switch games backlogged that I only played a few hours of and then put down because of load times or generally shitty performance.
