Jesus, are they really trying to keep the cast. Harrison Ford is over 70 years old. It's going to be so fucked.

They aren't likely to be the focus of the movie. Or at least the action scenes. Han can still fly a ship around or lead a fleet. Leia will have developed her force enough to levitate cake. Hamil will no doubt need to get in shape enough to swing a lightsaber around convincingly though. We deserve a better Jedi Master fight than that awkward fake looking crap with Palpatine and Yoda. Palpatine in action was such a letdown.

So which one is going to die? Han would be super obvious. Chewbacca would mirror the EU. Killing Leia would probably be going too far. So my money is on Luke having to sacrifice himself. That way they won't have to focus the action on a tubby old Jedi.

slippery goes from saying the movie won't be the same without Harrison Ford to saying it's fucked with him in it in a down of two posts. We should listen to this cat.

You know what I mean. You can't beat the original Harrison Ford, 40 years ago. Putting 75 year old actors in movies just to keep them does not do them justice. Especially when all 3 of them have long stories in the extended universe, and none of those stories are boring sit around none adventure stories. The characters aren't old, the actors are.

The last few EU novels have focused on the Solo's raising a secret grandchild and mostly playing diplomatic parts while planet hopping. There are hardly any action scenes involving Lea and Han, but when it is present it's straight forward gun fights, not triple back flips so Harrison should get off easy.

Luke is basically still the GM of the Jedi order, but off planet working out issues with his 16yr old son along. He has a few pretty active scenes showing how badass the GM of the Light can be, but a lot of it could be explained in an out of body experience.

Just like anything else in story telling, the burden of this being a success is simply good writing and knowing what they have to work with. If they have people worth the effort then the original cast's age won't matter. I have faith that it can't get any worse, but my only hope is for all the existing EU lore not to be shat on. A few of those story lines are simply amazing in scope.

And I don't think he's cared since the movie Sabrina.

But if some dude is gonna give you a couple of million dollars every year you'd be kinda stupid to say, "Nah. I'd rather just sit on my ranch and fly my helicopters this month". I mean that probably gets boring too. After a couple of years. Gotta mix it up.

Abrams stuck Nimoy in the star trek reboot and he was fine. Abrams knows how to make old actor cameos work while revolving around younger characters. I am not an abrams fanboi, but he has shown that he " gets it" when it comes to stuff like this. Ford, fisher and hamill will be fine. Might even be the highlight of the movie.

This isn't an alternate universe reboot where you can throw the actor in for 5 minutes and call it a day, which is essentially what that was. Unless they intend to skip a huge chunk of time (which they might because it would make their life vastly easier, so who knows) that isn't really the case here. I think people are looking for some of the really interesting stories and real progression of the books. It's been a really long time since I delved into the books at all, but things like the Jedi Academy (what I'd really like to see), Rogue Squadron, that ship that's meant to destroy suns, etc.

There was a 20 year break between Episode III and Episode IV. Who cares if they jump ahead 40 years? Maybe all that's been going on is boring shit, like rebuilding the republic and setting up trade and shit. Who the fuck wants to see that again? It was that kind of shit that made the prequels suck.

Han, Leia, Luke, Chewy... They aren't going to be the stars of the new movies. They're going to be the familiar faces/names that link them to the other trilogies. There will be new characters with the names "Skywalker" and "Solo". Probably other familiar names too. The first movie will be all about making it feel like Star Wars, and that means a ton of call-backs. Hopefully J.J. has worked out how to properly do a call-back this time, cause the ones he did in the Trek movies were nothing but fan service. "Oh look! A tribble! This IS Star Trek!"

Han and Leia settle down and help raise Luke's kid while Luke is away on Jedi matters/training. Some droids were bought from the local Jawa mobile market and later Luke's Son takes off with the new droids to see his damn hermit friend again.

Police show up asking about the droids.......

I know I mentioned this a while back but I'm wondering if its worth reconsidering again as a possibility now that they are for sure bringing back the old characters. Could we see fully realized CGI younger versions of these characters with simple voice overs from the real actors? Tron showed what is possible and the Star Wars franchise has always been known for pushing the envelope with special effects:

maybe its because i grew up on classic star trek, but i loved nimoy's cameo in the reboot, not that it made much sense for him to be there and meet young kirk. still was fun seeing spock be spock. i have no doubt fisher, ford and hamill will be equally cool.

It's extremely unlikely that anything from any of the books or comics or cartoons that took place post ep6 will have anything at all to do with ep7. It's all getting thrown out.

They sure as hell are not making a movie that starts off with

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

The only Star Wars books i have read that were post Return of the Jedi was the Thrawn Trilogy. I read almost exclusively with the Rise of the Empire era and here and there of the Rebellion era. Am I missing out? Is the New Jedi Order/Legacy era's worth it? Or is it 90% garbage like I've convinced myself it is without actually giving it a chance.

I'd love for episode 7 to be about the siege of Coruscant and the various things from the Rogue Squadron books. Although according toTimeline of galactic history - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wikiit only takes place 3 years after Endor, I'm sure they can stretch the timeline out a bit. Could do that movie with mostly new characters and avoid having those from the original trilogy be seen, and setup episode 8 for the later stuff (ie New Jedi Order) that would actually be somewhat in line with the ages of Hamill, Ford, and Fischer.
