Depends. Is it hatefuck night?

I can imagine no other response, or way to make the experience enjoyable.
We are both atheists. We are viewing this as a comedy. Not a drama.

Or is it because it kinda makes it pretty fucking clear your Bible is pretty ridiculous?
without getting into a religious debate, think about it this way. Take your favorite story. Maybe you like it because you identify with the characters. Maybe you like it because it's about good and evil and how good will triumph in the end. Maybe it's your favorite because you grew up with it and it reminds you of simpler times. For whatever reason, it's your favorite. The "why" of it is irrelevant. Now... someone comes along and makes a movie out of that story and spends the whole time rewriting it so much that it barely resembles the story you love. you'd be pretty irritated. Doesn't matter if it's Lord of the Rings, Hop on Pop, or the Bible. If it's a story you love, and someone is disingenuous to it then you're gonna be pissed.

I haven't seen it yet (not sure I'm going to in theaters but maybe we'll get bored), but supposedly it's not really what we would consider modern Christianity or anything. Aronofsky is an atheist himself. I guess if anything maybe it is more bible-accurate than Christian accurate, which means actual Christians will probably dislike it.

So for the religious people hating on this, why? Is it not truth enough to the story? Or is it because it kinda makes it pretty fucking clear your Bible is pretty ridiculous?

Also, apparently Roeper really likes this shit.

The subject matter has very little to do with my reaction to that trailer. I'm hating on it because it has every indication of being a horrible horrible horrible movie.

The ONLY thing that will make this movie any money is the subject matter. This is Twister. This is fucking twister. My girlfriend made me go watch that movie with her when her parents were in town. They were from Kansas. Even they thought that movie was balls. But they liked the big giant tornado. They thought that part was funny.

The "your bible is ridiculous" line is about as worthy of consideration as The Last Temptation of Christ. The only good thing about that movie was the soundtrack. That movie would have tanked without the free advertising of heavy handed and obvious baptist-bait. Go watch that movie again. It is a terrible movie. It is objectively bad. It is carried entirely by the "scandalous" subject. But the soundtrack is fucking AWESOME. The rest of that movie is an abstract study of cynicism. But I need to repeat it again. The soundtrack is awesome. Peter Gabriel has enough money... go pirate that shit and listen to it if you never have.

Making that argument it's apparent that you're reacting to an impression. The story is right there. It's right there. If you wanna call it ridiculous that's perfectly fine, hell I'll even agree with you -- but use the story itself! For gods sake, not 3rd tier fanfic. I imagine this movie is probably less offensive than the story itself. They wouldn't show that primitive racism (I mean REAL, pure, unexamined, even innocent in a fashion, jewish racism... not lolAmerican Inventors pussy racism) in a movie theater.

I could get behind this movie if it were disaster porn. I enjoy well made to mediocre disaster porn. But it's obvious from the trailer they don't have the balls to do that or the balls to admit it. They just want to separate some people from their money and they don't want to put that much effort into it. Its so lazy. Soooo laaaazy.

We can argue back and forth and that would be pleasant but here's the thing -- I dare you to go watch it!

Such rage towards something you haven't seen, and don't even plan to. You're letting this get the best of you and you come off as someone with his panties twisted around his nutsack.

First of all, I apologize for the religious-baiting. That was in poor taste.

As for the movie itself, it actually is getting pretty decent reviews. It seems to split alot of the audiences. However, the reviews seem to indicate that it is very far from "lazy". It has abunch of bigname actors and has supposedly great special effects (the movie is very beautiful, pretty much all the reviews mention this). In addition, supposedly it doesn't as much take liberties with the story, as harkens back to some jewish texts to expand the very short description in the Bible.

On the Passion of the Christ, it was a horrible movie because it was essentially religious torture-porn. Yet, I don't think it is a horrible movie. Oh, well, I mean, I find it horrible. However, I had some family friends who LOVED it, couldn't shut up about it, kept talking about how it showed in graphic detail about how wonderful Jesus was and how great his sacrifice was. They thought it was extremely powerful and that everyone should be REQUIRED to watch it.

Not going to be surprised if this is good. Most Bible stories are totally retarded from the perspective of them supposedly being historically accurate "true" stories that convey important moral values on which to pattern one's life, but if you treat them as the fantasy stories that they actually are and employ a bit of artistic license, it'd be easy to turn a lot of the Bible stories into cool movies.

People know this is directed by Darren Aronofsky right? Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan.
