Here's a thought: why don't we lift the sanctions and let western goods and culture trickle in and see if they can scrabble together the material means of revolution? That way, even when things end up shitty, it won't be because we used some horrible humanitarian pretext to justify pillage! No? Just replace their shitty dictatorship with another one that'll have the semblance of popular control without the reality of popular control but will end up doing slightly better economically because we won't be sanctioning the fuck out of it (because they'll let our corporations rape them) which we'll interpret as "victory" until the whole thing collapses after everyone who remembers enough to point a finger at us is dead and buried?
24,000,000 corpses made by the North Korean military brass nuking their own country as a last act of scorched earth spite would absolutely not be a better outcome.

It's irrational to start a war with the U.S. because that would drastically lower their life expectancy. Once they're already in the position of imminent death, it's perfectly rational for them to deny us the spoils of victory. This is basic game theory.
Seriously have you guys not considered the ramifications of invading a nuclear power before? If they can't nuke us and they can't beat us, there's absolutely no reason they wouldn't nuke themselves. Do you think the Pentagon doesn't have similar contingency plans to deal with a worst-case-scenario Soviet invasion? You think they'd just let the Reds have New York or whatever because the people running the top levels of our government give so much more of a shit about us than they do (or did) about their shitty ideology? Are you really that naive?

I actually agree with Mikhael. If we were to topple the group that has a nuclear weapon there's a real chance that they detonate it in a way that kills many of their own civilians. It's not realistic to presume they could 24mill civs with it, but if they detonated it in Pyongyang it'd be a big deal.

Let's assume MB is totally right and NK is ready to nuke themselves to spite the invaders. The best they've demonstrated so far is a 10 kt device, roughly half the yield of the Trinity test.
Using Nukemap, a 10 kt blast would do some serious damage, but it wouldn't even level Pyongyang. If the reports are correct and their devices are of the "science experiment" variety like Ivy Mike, they would also be forced to detonate them on the ground, which is less destructive than an air blast since a lot of the energy is directed upwards. And that's if they can even move them around effectively, which is unlikely in the "experiment" scenario.
I hope they have a lot of those 10 kt devices (extremely unlikely) and that they can easily reposition them into their most populous areas even in a time of war (also unlikely). Otherwise, the idea of them going out with a suicidal nuclear bang is an empty threat.

Frankly I am sceptical about this assertion given the timing and the fact that every previous assessment said they weren't able to do this, but in that case, if it isn't true, it was a reckless thing to say.
