Nosferatu Extended Cut Teased for Blu-ray Release by Robert Eggers

I might go ahead and wait for the extended version to come out before I watch it. I guess to any of you guys think there was a lot possibly cut out of the film?
Even though it didn't feel like anything was missing, I would kill a man to see more gypsy village and Orlok's casle

I felt the movie was a bit too long, honestly, but I would probably watch an extended cut because you know you're getting extra shit that didn't make it then, so longer is ok.

Well, probably not, because I don't know that I am THAT excited about seeing this again. But if they had just the extended scenes somewhere I could watch, I definitely would.

I could only remember. I think Herzog actually did a remake of the original Nosferatu and maybe that's where I was getting confused.
It's from 1979

The 1979 Nosferatu by Herzog starred Klaus Kinski, and their love-hate relationship was famous. Kinski’s bad temper caused constant fights, with Herzog pushing him to get intense performances. Herzog even said he once threatened Kinski with a gun to stop him from leaving Aguirre. Kinski, in turn, called Herzog manipulative. Still, they respected each other—Herzog saw Kinski’s talent, and Kinski admitted Herzog understood him better than most.

Kinski could erupt like a volcano

I thought it was very good film making.

My hot take:

This is a film about how sexual trauma affects future relationships with
the opening scene being said trauma. I think the key to this understanding this is the scene where Orlock meets Depp for the first time and describes himself as pure (sexual) appetite as the opposite pole of love. I also think it is significant that the film maker only has Orlock biting people on their chest near their heart instead of their neck but I am not sure how.

Depp’s character is troubled by her trauma throughout childhood and goes to her father about it who accuses her of sin but otherwise does nothing. In typical Oedipal fashion she marries Hoult’s character who treats her in much he same way. The trauma resurfaces during their honeymoon, but he ignores her needs and gaslights her in order to justify pursuing his husbandly duties like career, money, etc.

The husband only awakens to her trauma after he himself is traumatized. The married couple who shelters them are indirectly affected, and the scene with the two women in bed where Depp is vulnerable and expresses love is the only scene that I can recall in the film that shows a cross. I think the film maker is saying that this is true Christianity because her friend is the only one who listens to and believes her. But her husband denies the reality of vampires which symbolizes a denial of her trauma which in turn leads to the deaths of other innocent people, i.e. his family.

The vampire is only defeated through acceptance and vulnerability via sexual union within the bonds of marriage because she awaits orlock in a wedding dress.

I was distracted by my kid during the movie and I tend to read a lot into movies because I was a humanities major in school. I plan on watching it again to see if there was anything else I missed.
Going back to the chest sucking again; apparently that is the common method associated with the Romanian Strigoi vampire folklore.

Sort of related, sort of random: The more you can shake off preconceptions of vampires before going into this movie, the more you'll enjoy it. It's almost impossible to not bring your baggage with you into a vampire movie, but knowing the goal was specifically to make a folk vampire tale helps. The whole look of Orlok is simply "what would the walking corpse of a 17th century Romanian lord look like?". He's not a creature brought to life from the bite of another vampire, he is a corpse resurrected by occult magic. Some of the old vampire tropes are still present, but Orlok himself feels more remeniscent of the Wurdulac in Black Sabbath than Dracula or even the original Nosferatu

I took a girl on a date to see this movie. She made it through most of it but wanted to leave when the main girl & guy started banging to spite Count Dracula.

I personally thought the movie was pretty good, but the sexual stuff seemed to be a bit over the top & weird for what was otherwise a good horror flick. Definitely going to rewatch it when it comes out.

I would guess everything that happens once Orlock arrives in Wisborg. It felt somewhat rushed and I can see that being fleshed out more in an extended version.

I would recommend watching it in a theater. Maybe later so it's less packed. The guy chomping popcorn right next to me was annoying so I might go watch it again myself when it's less crowded.

To the other discussion about vampires in general, here's a bit of vampire symbolism to help understand what they mean. There is definitely a sexual aspect, but vampires are essentially the corrupt aspect of the aristocracy. In a healthy hierarchy, those at the top will provide protection, direction, and identity to those below them. In return, those below will provide support and resources to sustain the projects of those above.

When those above only take and give nothing in return so that it only becomes about selfishly sustaining themselves, they become vampiric. They are also obsessed with micromanaging and controlling everything in their domain. At the core, it's the sin of pride more than lust. Vampires are also an inversion of Christ. He gives everything, including his blood, so that we all can have eternal life. The vampire takes everything, including our blood, to give himself eternal life.

edit: fleshed not flushed lol

this is an interesting take.

The corruption of Hospitality is also a major factor. I would say the primary aspect of the modern vampire. (original feral ghoul vampires, feeding on family members is not the same)
THIS is why you have to invite a vampire in. (also, why a vampire with a warrant, wouldn't work. its not you inviting them in, thats the state legalizing the option to force themselves in. you owe them no safety, or comfort) 3k+ years of hospitality being a virtue. And vampires violate every aspect of it.
The nobility aspect is actually related to this. not the primary aspect. because you EXPECT a noble to abide by the rules of Hospitality.

Consider Draculas treatment of Jonathan harker.
That Dracula hosts Jonathan Harker first is not an accident. he invites Harker in. then traps him, and ends up leaving harker to be eaten by the brides. While Dracula invites himself to Harkers home, and wife.

Saw it today, really enjoyed most of it. Thought the acting was good for the topic. Like others I thought the ending was rushed compared to the long drawn out beginning (which really set the stage I thought) I loved that the Johnathan character was actually terrified of the count, and the actual castle was in ruins. The screenplay was good and the acting by most characters “Renfield” in particular was great! If you liked the original you will like this one.

The problem with Nosferatu is it comes off kind of limp at the end. The suspense is really gone in the final 1/3 of the film as you kind of already know what’s going to happen. DeFoe’s character gets lost compared to the Van Helsing of Dracula who really makes and impact on the story

This is where Bram Stroker’s Dracula is a much better story. There is much more suspense as the characters attempt to actively stop the vampire. The scene where they corner Dracula in one of his crypts is still my favorite part of the book. There is a rush at the end to stop him with always a high chance of failure which leaves you intrigued the first time you read it. In Nosferatu you get the sense that, “we’re fucked and can’t do anything” pretty early in the city scenes.

Dracula is also a much better villain than Orlok. Orlok is evil because he is, he wants “Mina” because…….where with Dracula you get an emotion and a disgust at his willingness to commit evil and his lust where Orlok was just “bad”

Also, PVOD-only, $24.99 to buy, and not the extended cut, just the theatrical version.

The Blu-ray edition contains two versions, theatrical and extended cut. The difference in runtime is as follows: 02:12:17 (Theatrical), 02:15:45 (Extended Cut).

Just another standard shriek and snarl movie about a story that's been retold far too many times. While not complete shit, I skipped most of the movie. 0/10.
