Anyone can say they are going to create an old school MMO in the same vein as EQ. Saying and doing are two different things though. And there is nothing on the 'doing' part that gives any indication that they would be successful in what they are saying.
Well no shit, that's what the kick-starter is for? It's not like millions upon millions of dollars get shat out of even publishers asses to make these things. If you want something niche, kick-starter is the only thing offering that type of service ATM for this industry.

I'm OK with this being a dream in their head and this Kickstarter money being used to fund that dream. I'm not OK with them not understanding the type of transparency people are looking for, nor I'm OK with the lack of effort in the Kickstarter page.

Things I don't expect: video footage, screenshots galore, systems that may or may not be in the game like the weather stuff

Things I expect: A nicely presented Kickstarter page with nice graphical images for the tiers and stretch goals (lol at the font, particularly the $5m level), details on classes, concept art for a premiere dungeon or two, tiers that support the "$800,000 doesn't make a game) logic, tiers that are enticing, downloadable wallpapers, insight into the combat system, etc.

That last quote from the team hurts because there's still a lack of understanding on what is needed. I'm not trying to troll or foam at the mouth with negativity, that's my honest criticism. Their idea of how to run a Kickstarter is wrong.

If I believe my money will contribute to the dream in their head actually being realized, I'll feel comfortable contributing something more than I have. They simply aren't selling their product right now.

i think one of the main problems is that.... people are saying "we're not getting enough information!".... but it only seems that way because the signal-to-noise ratio is so fucked in this thread heh

You obviously didn't read the email from THEIR PR GUY that said that was all the information they have ....

I dropped down from the $250 tier to the $45 tier... Mostly because of my dissatisfaction with how fleshed out their concept is, but also because that lifetime sub isn't looking appealing any more. I'm waiting on more specifics on class abilities, player interaction, combat system, and the dungeon experience before I bump back up to $250.

If I don't get that info, I stay at $45 until the end.
Gotta admit I think a lot of people are in this boat, myself included. I really would like to step up to $250 or $375 but the more I see the more it is looking like I am going to be sticking at the $45 level. $45 is my "whatever, go go vision" amount. At $250+ I need some positive feeling about the project that I am simply not getting.

that issue was remedied earlier today when their PR rep Ben stated that they already told us everything there is to tell and that anything to come is being generated on the fly.

Again, it is not that the thread has turned negative per say but the fact that we are getting bits of information and it is being review upon release. Sure, you have to filter out some of the posts but primarily, as information is release, it just isn't sitting well with this community. For this thread to not be "negative" you have to give us something that we find worth applauding. You can't expect to appreciate information that is below expectation. Honestly, I don't even think expectations are all that high but rather people are looking for consistency and creativity similar to EQ/VG.

The reason Brad isn't posting as much here is because he's is trying to work a lot of different audiences and i'm sure if he finds and audience more receptive, he's going to communicate more with that audience. Let's face it, he doesn't get much encouragement here without delivering the goods. Let's review, discusses fixes, and what needs to be done from here.

1. Release a Kickstarter with legitimate in-game shots. If none is available concept art. Do not put factory/stock assets in your released shots. If you are wanting to show the art direction, anyone can google the Unity engine and it's assets. Thus, simply place and link and reference the engine.
2. Do not continually admit you're still learning. Pose as the professionals at minimum. Display you've done your research. Kickstarter is nothing new. VR has repeatedly played their "we're learning" card. Learning what? You made Everquest? VG? Your team has years and years of experience and you're telling me you don't know how your target (niche) audience, which you chose by the way, works?
3. Cart before the horse. Why are we talking about the game when you need funding for a studio? salaries? etc. I know you want to show off a game that you want to make and that's supposed to encourage us to help you gain a place of employment but why even discuss it? I'm all for transparency but it is hard to focus on the game when there's no place to make it. I don't know the details but VR are the people bringing this up. It is distracting. Your stretch goals are all game based.. shouldn't you worry about being able to pay rent? If we are going to talk game, let's talk game. If you want my money for an office, show me what you want in terms of an office. What are we raising money for here? Should we be talking classes or how many computers you need an their specs?

Those are just some really quick thoughts and there is still time to make this happen but this has to change course and VR needs to act like they made games before and then have interacted with the gaming community.
Ok.. let's move forward.
1. Let's figure out what we are talking about. If we are talking about the game, let's talk about the game. Classes, races, combat, dungeons, etc. If you're having work so hard to get out information relevant to these points, and yes, I feel that it has been rushed, you started your own timer when you opened the KS.

And I say let the timer run, let things fall into place. Ever been rushed in a critical moment? I'll take quality over impatience any-day.

2. Get the community more involved. To avoid Dark Knight issues, have your team pick a list of names, ask what we would like to see, and make it so. If a name doesn't matter, then why maintain the control and assume all the risk?

Not sure if I like Dark Knight either, but the name is different than any other game. Dark Knight is a phrase coined long before the whole Bat-Man thing too, just seems like another thing for people to bitch about. It is symantical to worry more about the name at this point, more so than how the class will actually play.

3. Be very specific. Lore week is a good idea in essence but bad timing. I care about lore but not right now. However, I like how you have went specific. I know what to expect this week and that keeps the information hungry people at bay. Knowing is so much better thanspeculatingwhat we'll see next. It sucks that it will be lore this week but maybe you need the week to get other things ready.

You said it right there, that's what a lot of people do: Speculate. To the point of mashing what's good about something to fucking pieces. Kinda like a bunch of over emotional soccer moms.

I think what really was discouraging was seeing Kingdom Come pop up out of nowhere and look far more organized. We've been waiting on this shit since what, September? And it just doesn't seem to have all its ducks in a row right now. Like everyone else, I'm just echoing that they needed to be talking about this stuff constantly and giving design details and a plan. We've had too much "wait for the X" and then the X is very underwhelming. I'm not being doom and gloom or shitting on it, but I'm saying that the KS has been pretty poorly done, alongside with a lack of much information.
I wouldn't say "discouraging" - more like "aspirational" that is the template Brad and co should have been aiming for. We would've been discussing what stretch goal they'd reach not whether they'd get funded.

Don't see the relevance in comparing this to Kingdom Come. Obviously Kingdom Come has been handled much better, but it's also quite obvious that they have been working on it for quite a bit longer. They also said they received $1.5 Million in funding previously, which if I understand correctly, is a fucking shit load of money in the Czech Republic, where even really well paid people probably aren't making $30k per annum.

The Kickstarter may have come out of nowhere, but the game's existence has been known for a while. They just had their ducks in a row before they went to Kickstarter. Having a massive private investment to get things started definitely helps in that area.

The problem with a poor kickstarter, is that all the good will and articles on PC Gamer - people will click the link and see the Kickstarter page, and be underwhelmed. They won't donate and therefore won't spread the word.

Crowd-funded expectations are higher and a little bit of research would have shown this... and Pantheon's KS should have been delayed until there was more to show, and perhaps someone media savvy enough to polish it.

There are many people out there that are not members of forums, but did play EQ1 and have fond memories, and the opportunity to reach them is being squandered.

To avoid being annoying (I've already voiced my concerns a few times) I'll just say that I'm genuinely not trying to be negative. I've voiced my opinion as clear as I can and from here on out I'll just wait and see what happens. My pledge still stands, I've just got some major concerns.

Man come the fuck off it, Muligan summed up pretty well some of the glaring issues with this project, and I hate to break it to you but we didn't hold a gun to their head and make them launch this Kickstarter. Nor is it our responsibility to fix it. Still we have tried to offer suggestions to fix it, you might enjoy paying for the privilege to work on this project for them but I doubt so many people are willing to climb aboard the same boat and continue blowing smoke up everyone's asses.

We have done the only thing we can do as a community, which is discuss the merits of this "game". I say "game" because there is no fucking game and you know it. What we have is a group of unemployed has-beens asking for cash to found a company which will then ask for money to make a game. In spite of all of that there has been page after page of constructive criticism, sure there has been a fair bit of hyperbole and sarcasm sprinkled in but it's the fucking internet what do you expect.

Brad McQuaid is the George Lucas of MMO's, in a galaxy far far away this mother fucker got lucky and had a bright enough team surrounding him that he became successful in spite of himself. Everything he has touched since this has been a mere shadow of his glory, and reveal him for the fraud he is.

@etchazz I think everyone should be in at 20 or 45 just to show support for old school ish MMOs. If it looks like they're close on day 38 or 39, I'd up the pledge not because I think they can deliver but again, just to show the other eyes out there watching the kickstarter that there us sufficient interest.
No, labeling yourself "oldschool" is not good enough and it shouldn't be good enough to get people to give you money.

Let's just put it like this then. Nothing they have put out, whether it be the lore, classes, screenshots, map of the dungeon, etc., gives me any indication this is a game that's going to be very much like Everquest. You could say this game is going to be a hard core version of Rift or WoW or anything like that and it would be the same thing. I'm not the only one that thinks like this.
