Ok, what is everyones solution to stink-ass diapers? Do those odorless diaper disposal pails really work? Up until this point we had just been using a regular small trash can in the kids room and emptying it every day, but that isn't even enough now, almost every single diaper stinks like hell all of a sudden.

I don't want to spend money on some gimmicky odorless disposal bin if it doesn't actually work.
We simply take them to the outside trashcan right away every time. There is no need to keep them in the house, and I have never really understood why people do it. Unless your outside trashcan is a hike, why not just take it straight out?

We used cloth diapers, and they had a bag that was smell proof for the loaded diapers. Some folk get these bags for disposable diapers, too. The bags are cheap, and easy to wash.

I have friends that put a garbage bag inside an empty cat litter bucket that closes tight as tupperware. No smell.

Then there is the option to, every time you have a loaded diaper, open the window, and lob that sucker out.

Kiddo is on the mend - totally expecting virus number 4 by next Tuesday. Just in time for the 4 month appointment a week from today and more shots.

My poor husband is going to field that evening time...(though to be fair I fielded the last one)....work awarded me the employee of the year award and I have to go to the fucking board of trustees dinner that night.

(In other news I got the dream job today. I will be giving notice to my current employer 2 December).
glad to hear he is feeling better. and congrats on the new job!

We bought 12 cloth diapers(enough?) but haven't used them yet. He turns 1 month tomorrow. When's the appropriate age to start? We tried them on after a week and they looked ridiculous and restrictive.

Just isn't always convenient. Down a couple flights of stairs and out into the garage. Plus my 65 year old mother is our nanny, I don't need her going up and down flights of stairs all day while caring the kid when they are home alone all day.

My wife is super awesome at wrapping used diapers. They go into the lidded garbage can in the dining room. Trashed gets changed ~ every 3 days. No smell issues /shrug

With multiple kids, we literally can't leave to the curb every time we need to take a shitty diaper out. My middle girl is a fucking hellion, she loves doing mischievous shit like filling the fishtank with toys or emptying bottles of shampoo on the carpet. And it only takes her a second. She .... god dammit she is so frustrating. So yeah, she cannot be left alone, even for a trip to the garbage can. Unless I've got her distracted. So like when I take out the trash is normally during their meal/snacktime, maybe throw on some My Little Pony because I am a terrible parent. We just wrap shitty diapers in a plastic bag from the grocery store and throw it in the trash, it contains the smell pretty well. Sometimes if we're taking the trash out soon we don't even do that. Our trash can has a lid and it contains the smell pretty well in the short term.

We almost did it for my last girl, we just couldn't justify the initial expense for the short time she would be in the diapers. She has really bad diaper rashes and it is supposed to be way better for that.

From what I understand, it really isn't that difficult to clean. And it isn't as if you aren't already elbow deep in shit and piss for the first two years. Might as well save some money and stuff.

I've never been pissed on and I've never been elbows deep in shit. 3 kids and I think I've only ever touched shit maybe 4 or 5 times.

And even if I was elbows deep in it, why would I want to go any deeper?

Nope, no cloth for me. No thanks.

Edit: Great for those who do go that route, it's just not the route for this guy.

You're so lucky. I've been shit and pissed on, stepped in it, had one puke in my face/mouth, I am immune to bodily functions at this point. At least when it comes to them.

We have two diaper genies and they both work fine. The times we have smelled them not working is because the part inside that clamps the bag closed, wasn't able to do that because the bag was either too full or the bag didn't have enough slack. A few times the bag has ripped as well. Refills aren't that bad. 3 pack from Amazon with 20% Subscribe and Save is cheaper than the generic Target version.

We started using cloth diapers as soon as he came home with us. At first you just use the inserts themselves (keeping everything pulled together with a clip like the one pictured below). When they get big enough to wear the covers you put the inserts in the covers - no more clips required. Covers are just like plastic diapers (except with snaps instead of velcro). I have seen some cloth covers with velcro, but even at 4-5 months our baby would try to play with the velcro so we stuck with snaps only.

I will say that the newborn clips were more of a hassle for me than regular diapers, but like anything else you get more proficient at it the more you use them. You won't be doing it for long.

Edit: The reason we decided on cloth over plastic was because I've got pretty sensitive skin and always had rashes as a baby. We wanted to err on the side of caution and cloth is much less irritating. We have used disposable diapers when we've gone to visit family (they had efficient frontload washers - no bueno for cloth). While it wasn't the end of the world, after a few days rashes would appear and we'd have to let our baby air out for a while between diapers.

Yep, definitely considering that route...just trying to figure up an estimate of how many we will need so we can buy in bulk if we go that route. Would probably just buy the 2000-count pack and be done with it.

Not to be contrary, but this is exactly wrong. Disposable diapers wick the fluid away from skin much more quickly, and lock it away. We used cloth, and if our children developed a rash, we'd use disposable diapers for a couple of days, and it went away.

Also, I've never been peed or pooped on, which is kind of a miracle. I also didn't touch a lot of poop, even with cloth diapers. I'd use cloth again in a heartbeat. Especially if you're going to have multiple children. The initial cost is high, but the long term cost is terrific.

I've always been leery of kids when they get older, because from the outside looking in it looks like a huge amount of frustration. When they're little though, I think I could handle it.
