You can use Toolbox mod to turn any companion into a merc but with the companion quests/story, which I find preferable. You just click the button for full respec and it takes you to the same blank character creation screen that you use with mercs/MC; you can even change the buy in amount down to anything you want. Then, if you are truly committed, you can open up their perks, and delete any that might cause an unfair edge, if the full respec missed them (occasionally it happens with racials).

Also, people who care if other people are cheating in a single player game are weird/retarded.
Yes thats what I used to respec Woljif and why I wanted to use him instead of a merc. I had double merc for a while in the beginning of Kingmaker until Jubilost replaced my Alch merc but I kept my Gozran Ecclesitheurge through to the end over using whats his name.

Cheating matters if you're gonna brag about something like Sadistic Game Design, which so far seems to be the rarest achievement in WotR at 0.4% although I wouldn't be surprised if Test of the Star Stone is even lower.

Oh, I guess there weren't any of the companions that I disliked enough that I would rather ever have a merc over respecing them. Some of the "good" characters, like Seelah and Sosiel are meh, but you don't need either of them to make a complete good/neutral party.

When it comes to achievements, I don't generally go out of my way for them or pay them too much mind. If someone mentions them, I usually read it less as a brag and more as they set a personal goal for themselves, then spent their gaming sessions to finish it. It took me half your post to even figure out what you were talking about, as I thought you were just calling the Unfair difficulty sadistic and using weird capitalization for no apparent reason.

I'm very glad Seelah is a reformed criminal because Owlcat's take on lawful good is completely terrible aside from the way she's written. Regill might be one of the best written "evil" aligned characters I've ever seen in a crpg.

I tried to like this game, but the combat feels so flat compared to BG3. Also, the overwhelming amount of text forced me to skip it, which left me oblivious of the story.

so what did you think of The Enigma?
Me? Kind of overwhelming honestly. And a little ridiculous that all the other companion quests are these brief little things whereas Nenio basically doesn't even have companion quests...until the very end where it's this complex marathon of a dungeon that culminates in one of the hardest encounters in the game. By which I mean it seemed like it would be pretty tough for a build that wasn't a merged caster optimized for unfair since I had to actually pay attention to what I was doing rather than just romping through it without a care in the world.

Still don't know how I feel about Nenio, it's not like they give you any time to process all those crazy reveals since it's right before the end of the game. The only time I really used her aside from her mandatory spot in Enigma was as a source of haste while Woljif was awol. Her dump stat str means she cant contribute to melee until near the end of act 3 when you finally can clear the army guarding death's consonant and she doesn't truly shine until she finally gets 9th level spells + a greater persistent rod. Persistent Weirds tear through some of the Enigma rooms so it was nice to see her get her moment but she went right back into reserve as soon as the dungeon was over.

I liked it better than bg3. The combat isnt as strong as bg3 and there are ton of annoying filler encounter, but the build creation is the most exciting i ve experienced. As for the story, you just have to skim through, reading even half of it is just too tedious.

Owlcat def needs to tone down the narrative a bit. Also the thing that pissed me off about their games, and its maybe the rule set problem, is the stupid buffs. Once you get them youre like sweet!, but then after the 10th fight youre like where the fuck is my buff all button.

Finally getting around to Through the ashes. its interesting. its like shield maze 2.0. a very tightly designed campaign. like, there is a correct path, and a wrong path. the right path, you find and use tools/ropes as needed correctly, and get loot. you use terrain, to kill half the enemies. like pushing statues down on them, pouring oil, etc. take the wrong path, and go out of order, and you manually fight everything, get overwhelmed, and waste limited ropes/tools on trash."

same can be said with a optimized party. how hard it is, will depend greatly on your PC choice. through the ashes is 1-5. with each level being one map/zone basically. gear is very limited. rests are very limited.
you get 2 preset companions. a bow rogue, and a sorc. 3 more "mercs". which you can default, or make your own. make your own is of course easy mode... (can technically even skip. an achieve for that. 3 manning it.) 2 mercs decent. a greatsword spec slayer. a halfing cleric. other one is a half orc tower shield spec. which is of course, just a terrible class. probably best to just ignore that, and give her a 2h weapon, making use of general fighter feats/stats.

mortismals vid on the dlc stated something I hadn't realized. all the dlc apparently unlocks stuff for the main campaign, permanently when completed. like, once you beat through the ashes, every new run of the main campaign, you'll find a loot package in the basement of defenders hearth, from the through the ashes team.""

lord of nothing save import is a direct 1:1. all loot, all characters, etc ported over. so do consider what you buy/sell before that last rest. set your spells correctly.

Chained darkness kicking my butt in Lord of nothing. Core. I don't see any options to take him out.
did the default party options. Took the premade level 1 cleric PC. sun/healing domain.
took "give me your mercs", as previously mentioned. tower shield fighter is still pure. slayer I went 5slayter, 6 gendarme to give a horse mount.
lord of nothing adds a thunder bard npc.

standard outflank/crit/sieze the moment, builds.

I saw someone suggest icy prison and lots of reloads till it hits...
alternatively, reload to previous save, pre level up.and take baleful polymorph and do the same.

Don't know anything about the DLCs, but what about the 10,000 summons strat? Load up all your casters on as many summons as they can muster, then resummon as they die. Give non-casters summon wands too. Give your melee some ranged weps, or have them able to disengage from combat so summons soak damage.

It was the only way I beat Baphomet on Unfair, but they could have easily changed how summons work by now.

I like this game, but I'm stuck in the first part of the map before you go west.

Do I grind somehow to level, or am I just bad and need to fix my team, buffs, gear setup?

If you stuck I would check out some guides or lower the difficulty. There is a reason they call it Mathfinder...
