The only problem with Labs is exercise. They are highly energetic dogs and will rip your house apart unless you tire them out every day. You pretty much need to take them for long walks and/or throw the stick around like clockwork. An old GF of mine had a lab and he was a handful until he got older and his energy levels dropped.

It's extremely important to weigh a dogs exercise needs vs your own time and energy levels. If you're gone at work ten hours a day and only feel like taking your dog for a 10 minute walk when you get home, then don't get any high energy breed like a Lab. I know I'm fucking lazy and want to eat and play computer when I get home, as well as having no desire to go jogging with my dog, so I got a bulldog. I'm the one who has to drag his ass outside (he's that lazy) and if I need to play four hours straight of video games, he'll just sleep the entire time with his head resting on my foot. Make sure to get a breed whose personality and energy levels mimic your own.

Getting an asshat doesn't make you a labradoodle. Putting a scarf on your labradoodle when you walk it makes you an asshat.
Hater... It was raining!!

Labs can get oily. It's not the worst dog smell, though.

I'm saying Labradoodle Master Race, though. Poodle athleticism and smarts without the neuroticism. Lab toughness and endurance. Reduced Shedding...
Labradoodles are also supposed to be hypoallergenic according to the only person I know who owns one.

There actually isn't any such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. Allergies are triggered by dog skin and saliva, not fur. The reason why Labradoodles, poodles, and some other breeds are mislabeled as "hypoallergenic" is because they don't shed, and fur itself can be a carrier for the aforementioned skin and saliva. So, you have less chance of triggering an allergy attack with a non shedding breed, but the allergies will still be there depending on your sensitivity levels and how you interact with the dog.

Right so probably more accurate to say they are less allergenic than most other breeds.

This is probably the biggest thing with dogs. Quite a few breeds must have activity throughout their lives. My two labradoodles average about 15 miles of walking and running every week. After about two days of low activity, they become restless and things get chewed and commands get ignored. Let the inactivity go on for too long, and they are likely to chase the first fox they see for a couple miles.

Gotta meet their high energy. They are brilliant dogs.

Whatever you fucking do, don't get a belgium shepherd. My malinois mix is fucking insane. Awesome dog, but holy shit does he require a fuckload of time or he starts looking for trouble out of boredom.

Basically any herding dog will be like that. They are bred to work, not sit around the house. So many people with collies cause lassie or worse border collies cause babe and they sit around getting morbidly obese. People just jump into breeds without any research.

re: Small dogs yapping when you're going for a stroll/run/whatever around the neighborhood. Am I the only one who hopes the dog comes near enough to my kid that I have casus belli to see how high I can throw the dog into the nearest tree?

"But sir, I understand you wanting to protect your son, but why did you run 50 meters to the giant oak tree before throwing the dog?"
"because I have goals, that's why."

Don't want to burn my Google quota for the day, so just going to ask / pose this. Are labradoodles not a recognized breed at this point? I think that is when something is no longer a mutt but a breed? I looked up the distinction years ago when I was looking into kangals and dogos, I don't think they are akc recognized for shows etc... Anyway, anyone want to burn some Google keystrokes and time etc.

Crate training is the best thing I ever did to my dog. If you start as a puppy it becomes their home and they actually enjoy being in their crate. My dog willingly sleeps in his and hoards all his toys and stolen items in his crate.

BTW, here's my Master Race Bulldog. Guy is a superstar. Go bulldog or go home.
Indeed! Before/during/after park trip.

"Currently, they are not considered a breed by any major fancier and breeder organization. "
Because the Labradoodle is a crossbreed and not a breed, puppies do not have consistently predictable characteristics.[3] While most Labradoodles have some common traits, their appearance and behavioral characteristics remain, to some extent, unpredictable.

We had a couple of different breeds of bulldogs when I was growing up and they are indeed fuckin' awesome if you're wanting something that doesn't come with the "get me my exercise every day or I'm tearin' this home of yours apart" drawback, but there are some caveats.

The first is that if you have a hard time dealing with the death of a pet, then you may want to pass on a breed that has an average lifespan of about 8 years. Secondly, they've been bred for appearances to the point that they have a lot of health issues like joint and breathing problems and it's not unusual for a female to be unable to pass puppies through her pelvis, requiring surgery to deliver.

This is why there has been some intentional cross-breeding going on with bulldogs for a while now. Long before the designer dog fad got rolling. We had a boxer-bull about 25 years ago. They're leaner and taller than a English bull and with a slight longer nose, but not nearly as large as a boxer. Unfortunately ours didn't inherit an ounce of the bulldog temperament. She was rambunctious and high strung. This isn't her, but she looked almost identical:
