Ohh shit, I forgot to mention that I pretty much filled in all four of my little sisters on anything and everything they wanted to know, so I imagine it will be pretty similar to that. They were pretty much all embarrassed, but still had a bunch of questions.

Now that I think about it, I should probably call up my 30 year old sister and say "Hey, remember that big sex talk we had when you were like 15? Not in agreement with teaching them to jack off mainly because I think it was so much more special for me that I discovered it all on my own. I used to do it kind of weird and sometimes I go back to that method for nostalgia's sake.

My hubby didn't even learn what jerking off was until he was 16 or so. I learned when I was like 11. I do think that telling your child that it's perfectly normal to masturbate and not to be ashamed of it is smart. I also do think that it's wise to tell your child early that if they're gay to not be ashamed of it and that you (the parent) will love them regardless. Will definitely save a lot of headaches and a potential suicide.

Will not being ashamed of being gay nullify the effects of the bullying at school? Or will it bring it on sooner? Cause they act like it's the school bullying that causes most of the suicides.

It's an interesting question. If they're actually not ashamed of being gay, the bullying is a lot easier to manage. Takes a lot of work on parents' part, though.

My thought is that you can still support them when they come out later. But delaying the coming out might delay the bullying. Isn't it easier to come out in, say college, than in Jr High?

I see your point, but I don't think that's how it works. I'm pretty sure the bullying can and will make a lot of people ashamed of things they otherwise wouldn't be ashamed of. It's being different that kids pick up on and keep them from being part of the pack.

But a thought occurred to me. If every parent included the "It's Ok to be gay" speech as part of the sex talk, even if their kid didn't wind up being gay maybe it would cut down on the bullying of those who were or make the kid more apt to stand up for a gay kid who was being bullied.

And don't get me started on that shit. I was an assistant manager of a movie theater after high school, and it infuriated me that parents would come in with 6 or 8 kids, clearly some were their kids, and some were not.
