I have the note 2. Awesome device in every way. I usually go through cell phones twice a year and I have no urge to even look at anything else right now except the note 3.

The HTC One is coming out in early April and the Samsung Galaxy will be announced tomorrow (3/14). I would take a look at those before I pulled the trigger on anything right now.

The HTC One has a better screen than the droid DNA and slightly better battery life (although still not great) and also it is made of machined aluminum and kind of awesome looking.

The S4 should be really nice as well if it's a worthy successor to the S3.

The One is a damn sexy looking device, but I'm not sold on the developer version for $650. I paid $350 for my Nexus 4 and it does the job just fine. It's a bit sad since I really LOVE the look of the One in comparison.

HTC has been making some really nice looking devices. After having my Galaxy Nexus for a while, all the plastic pieces is probably what I hate most about it. No idea why HTC hasn't figured out battery consumption yet.

I thought it was called the HTC One already, then they released the HTC One X, and now they are going back to the HTC One.

I'm buying the HTC One as soon as it goes on sale. Looks like a sweet phone.
It does look like an awesome phone. I love what they have done with the camera. Rather than playing into the more mega-pixels = better pictures myth they have actually decreased the mega-pixels and just said "trust us, this thing takes better pictures than just about any phone on the market". Also see that there is a Verizon version as well as an unlocked 'developers version.' No HSPA+ on the developers so no-good on any T-Mobile based pre-paid plans (at least not until they roll out LTE).

I'm kind of surprised you are going with an HTC phone with all the concerns you have expressed about battery life. All the other bells-and-whistles outweigh that factor for you?

Now for the moment of truth: in our rundown endurance test, in which we play an HD video on endless loop, the One made it through six and a half hours before all of its juice was sucked dry -- an average result.

To be fair, HTC's build quality of their most recent round of devices is second only to Apple, and with the One... it may just surpass it. I'll leave that until I see one in person.

The developer version IS damn appealing, but I'd basically be spending $350 to upgrade to the new hotness and I can't rationalize it... yet.

The thing about cellphone batteries these days is that they either got to hold for 8-10 hours or 36 hours. Anything in between is pointless since you're charging it overnight. 6.5h of hd video playback is pretty decent since they're watching that at 1920x1080 and that's a shitload of pixels.

The one is a nice looking device. Build quality looks second to none. My beef with HTC is with their bloated sense software. Something I used to say was a must buy is now a bloated train wreck. Previous devices had been stuttering with only 1gb of ram hopefully they've made some optimizations and just didn't shoe horn more bloat to fill the extra gig.

One of the biggest reasons I'm in love with my Note 2. Battery life is amazing, really amazing and getting that with a huge screen was nearly impossible prior to the GS3 and Note 2.

Speaking of battery life, all of the sudden my Nexus 4's battery life has seemingly doubled for no reason that I can find. No it's not from the last Android update, it was still pretty mediocre immediately after. But since last week I've noticed that if it's fully charged at 6am when I unplug it in the morning, through an average day's worth of usage, it'll still be 60-70% by 10pm that night. If I'm hardly using it other than occasionally turning it on to check an email or text, it's only using 2-3% per hour now, whereas before it seemed like it was more like 4-5%. On a full charge with my usage it would appear that I can go a full day to day and a half without charging now.

I have literally made no changes to anything in the past couple weeks. Odd.

On my Thunderbolt (stock ROM), I used to have battery issues (more so than just the normal shitty battery life on that phone) with the camera. If I was using the camera and I hit the home button rather than exiting out of it, the camera would run in the background or something chewing up battery. I'm now using a Droid Bionic with the Eclipse ROM and haven't had an issue with the camera or battery at all.

I stated before that my battery life got much better after turning off Google Now. It sucks that I can't use that feature, but I lived without it before getting this phone anyway. The One has a battery that is a little bit bigger. I have seen other reviews that say the battery life is great on the One, but I'm sure Anand will give us the final verdict on that. The biggest seller for me is the unibody aluminum construction. The iPhone spoiled me with such great build quality and now the One matches and some say exceeds the iphone in that category.

Is the HTC going to fly under the Big Red flag? Locked into VZW thanks to an employee discount (25%) for a job I haven't worked for in almost 4 years.

The bigger point, per my rambling question, is that I really don't have a use for the "smart" in a smartphone, but if the 1080p screen on the DNA were to elicit something like the Rapture or if the Note's sketchbook capabilites are truly what the say are (S-Pen, Wacom).

At this point, if it isn't spectacularly amazing, then I have no interest in getting back into the smartphone rat race.

The exact opposite thing has been happening with my Nexus 4. For some unknown reason, despite me not changing anything, a Google Talk partial wakelock is murdering my battery life. I haven't installed any new apps or changed anything and I uninstalled Google Talk months ago.

I hope the rumours of a new power management system in Key Lime Pie are true. Power management is still a bit of a mess on Android.

HTC One looks nice, it's too bad that side of the fence keeps pumping out phones the size of mini tablets. The new S4 is supposed to be even bigger, probably going to need a purse to carry it around.

The 5" phones look pretty huge if you're not used to them, but just about everyone I have talked to who went to a big ass phone has said that they wouldn't go back.

Not sure that I'd want to go much bigger than the Nexus 4 @ 4.7". With a couple pairs of my jeans that have shorter pockets it's damn near sticking out the top. But I guess 5" wouldn't make too much of a difference.
