In one of the million S4 articles I browsed yesterday it was stated that at no time would the 8 cores run together in the non- north american version. It was either 4 high juice or 4 low juice, no idea if it's been factually confirmed yet but i imagine it will be soon.

Inb4 someone gets an S4, develops a custom kernel for it and blows the entire battery in 5 minutes while overclocking all 8 cores.

I'm sure there's a pretty strict thermal cap before they shut down or anything like that. The same thing was happening with the Nexus 4 when it was first released. I haven't looked lately to see about benchmarking and all, as I'm more interested in battery life and having a smooth UX.

The 8 cores are for their big.LITTLE fix for the power issues of ARM's cortex A15 design. Basically 4 of the cores are built using ARM's A7? architecture which is less powerful but much more efficient. Those 4 cores would be in use the majority of the time when performing less intensive tasks. The other 4 cores are built on the cortex A15 architecture. They are much more beastly but power draining as well, so theoretically would only kick in when more intensive processing tasks require it. The problem with this "solution" to power efficiency is that it eats up more space on the board and costs more to manufacture. Not ideal at all.
I'm pretty sure the US variants aren't getting the Exynos, just like the S3. We're getting theQualcomm Snapdragon 600, the same processor as the HTC One.

So trying to get away from requiring jailbreak as its getting more and more infrequent to have a jailbreakable device...

Is there a decent alternative for NON PC connected filesystem access on iOS Device without jailbreak? (Like iFile)

Not quite ready to fully go android yet and still need iOS for some stuff.

Root filesystem access? No.

Limited, sandboxed filesystem access? MobileStudio works. There are a bunch of others, I'm sure. Nowhere near as powerful as iFile/Terminal/OpenSSH/whatever.

Will give that a shot.Thanks.

I dont need anything ridiculously powerful. Just copy paste delete between different apps documents folder.

Maybe the better route would be to get a developers license. Not exactly sure if that would allow me the access I need on my device.

A mobile version of ifunbox is more than what I need... Thanks again for the suggestion.

Edit: Tried mobilestudio... but its sandboxed inside its own app. I need access to /var/mobile/applications

I don't know if there's anything that will allow you any kind of unsandboxed access without a jailbreak on the device itself. That's kinda the point of the sandbox in the first place.

Okay, I have a question for you guys, somewhat related to my last rant about Rogers screwing me over on my data plan. I can go with Wind Mobile (http://www.windmobile.ca/en/Pages/default.aspx) and get an unlimited plan, including data (only HSPA+, unfortunately -- but it's unlimited) for $30/month. Problem is, they don't speak iPhone as it doesn't do the AWS band. So, I figure, I can get a cheap Android phone, go buy a plan with Wind, and tether 100% of the time from my iPhone to the Android phone.

Question is, which Android phone? I'd need a phone that does HSPA+ (LTE isn't necessary since Wind doesn't do LTE at this point) and has great battery life. All I'm going to be doing with it is tethering data. I'll never use it for anything else. Anyone have any suggestions? So far, the suggestion Wind gave me is the Huawei U8651, but I'm sure there's a better phone for this purpose out there.

Let's ignore, for the moment, the fact that I'm not willing to throw my iPhone 5 aside. I spent enough money on it that I'm really unwilling to just get rid of it.

How cheap? Most hspda devices get good battery life. Depending on carrier you might need to root for tethering although that process is trivial usually.

You could jail break the iPhone and sell it for good $$. I wouldn't hold on to it unless you'll use it.

I use it all day, every day. It's jailbroken. My issue isn't with the phone -- it's with the fucking horrible prices on all the carriers that actually support iPhone, so I don't really want to ditch the phone. It isn't the problem.

As far as how cheap goes, I suppose I'll pay what I need to pay for the best device for my needs. Battery life is king for this purpose. Since I don't know anything about modded Android kernels, I don't know what runs on what, so I only have half the picture in terms of what device would be best (since I'm hearing that some kernels dramatically increase battery life, yeah?). How about a maximum of $200?

I got $385 for my 32GB iPhone 5 from sellcell.com. I paid $299 for it. Not a bad way to go if you don't want to deal with ebay.

I should add that it's factory unlocked. I didn't buy it on a plan, so I shelled out a great deal of money for the phone.

I'm actually thinking I might want to go Blackberry just for the luls, but I'm not sure anyone's done enough research on the battery usage with tethering. I'm assuming that a well-tuned Android phone will smoke the Z10 for battery life, though.

So if all you need is tethering (not actually a phone?) Have you considered those portable hotspots they are selling with data?

Is your iPhone gsm? Support or not officially they can't control what device gets the Sim card. Just use it?

I would look at any of the newer Samsung devices you can probably get a note or a gs3 for less than that once the s4 launches.

If you use your iPhone a ton just sell it and buy a used one that supports the frequency?

No iPhone is supported by the particular carrier I'm trying to go with. They are somewhat small time and don't have access to the same frequencies as the big three up here. This is part of why competition sucks in the wireless industry in Canada. It's not that they want to control what device I'm using -- the iPhone doesn't work on the bands they provide service on. Neither do all Android phones. Most do.

As for a hotspot, good call, I'll check if Wind is selling/providing service for them.

Either way, this might just be the excuse I needed to go buy an S3/S4 or a Note/Note 2.

I am having some trouble finding the release date for the HTC One in the US. I thought it was this month (March) for the US and April for Europe is that still the case? Anyone know a more specific date?

Also for you Android users out there how is Androids music playlist, creation and playback compared to iTunes/iPhone? I listen to Audiobooks a lot and iTunes is pretty shitty in terms of how much organization I do with with my audiobooks.

Also how are the touchscreen controls for music? On my iPhone 3GS they have always annoyed the hell otu of me as the fast forward and rewind buttons are so close to the play button that I constantly hit them. Is this the same for Android phones?

Disclaimer* I am considering upgrading from an iPhone 3GS to an S4, HTC One, or iPhone 5. Wife owns iPhone 5 which is ok but it is still Apple

Don't forget that you won't have phone service using a hotspot

I'm actually in Ottawa on Wind also, I find the service to generally be decent but make sure you're aware of the service area. I was a little surprised when I found out they didn't have service in Montreal (apparently Videotron bought the spectrum for Quebec and recently was trying to sell it to Rogers).

HTC is being silent on the US launch of the One. Some other countries are delayed. The crazy German's already have it.
