Just because that's how they approached them and that's how they perceived it/wanted it to be does not mean that it was EVER the producer's intent. They are playing Survivor together...just not the way they thought/hoped they'd be playing it together. It's more dramatic this way...they have to compete AGAINST their loved ones in competition...they have to WAIT until Redemption Island to see if their person was voted out, then they have to make the choice to switch or not. The way you're seeing it is the way it was planned. The other way isn't as dramatic and doesn't add up male/female wise.
You can stop trying to make the square peg fit in the round hole now.
Edit* Unless you can find me a quote from a Producer on the show saying they were going to go that way. What the contestants thought/hoped/perceived means nothing.
