It's more like, if you want to play a majority of the JRPG's, PS3 is the better choice.
Very true. My irritation is that MS seemed to start the generation with exclusives like blue dragon, Lost odyssey, tales of vesperia, mass effect, ace combat, eternal sonata, gears and so on. It feels to me like around the time they unveiled kinect, they started trying to be a "media center", and all their exclusives went multiplatform or were dropped entirely. Thats why I'm selling mine now: I've played all the exclusives I care to, with none on the horizon.

The hardest decision for me now is if I should get a vita, because it feels like with PS+, I would get a great value out of it, but it's pretty pricey and there are a lot of games I prefer on the 3DS. I want to get a handheld console this week, but I really can't decide.

I get your point but a lot of those aren't system-selling franchises. Not too many people are making their system purchase decision solely because of twisted metal or LBP or indie games. Both systems have a handful of AAA unique franchises that move significant systems. A random JRPG doesn't.
Uncharted/TLoU are most certainly system selling franchises, same with God of War and GT. LBP? Probably not a system mover on its own, but it's still a fairly successful and big IP that helps contribute.

The fact that you pretty much have to have a PS3 to get JRPGs in general is also a system seller, though selling onGenrerather than a single title and this will probably remain true on the PS4. It'll likely be the same situation for Indie games with how the current climate is as well.

Watch the integrated memory controller bottleneck both system's effective memory bandwidth down to 50gb/sec. Or watch the shitty ass cpu be such a bottleneck that the number of compute units barely comes into play. Theres a hell of a lot of ways to bottleneck a system. I'm not saying I have any faith in microsoft's design, I'm just saying I really can't wait for gamespot to get their hands on the final system hardware and run some benchmarks in COD:dogs.

From what I've been reading the bandwidth has been covered already for the units and it's astronomical for the PS4 and better than PC for X1. As much as I'd love to see some sort of crash and burn like that, I think it's highly unlikely.

I am considering the same thing on the Vita as you are. I am also interested in getting a PS+ sub just to get the free games so I can play them on my PS4 (I don't own a PS3)

Vita risk is much lower if you can grab one used from Craigslist or something. If the remote play ends up not being all that practical then I'm only in for $150 and a handful of games I've bought on clearance. I'm not investing much else in the system other than the free games they're shoveling out through PS+ until they un-fuck their memory card situation.

I actually got a vita today. Gamestop's running a 50% trade-in promo right now, and while I usually hate gamestop, I got $330 for my xbox360, PSP, ipod touch, and 3 games. I used that to buy a used vita ($200), 1 year of ps+ ($50), persona 4 golden, katamari, and a ps3 game (buy 2 get 1 free promo), with a bit of credit left on the card. Not a bad swap, I feel. I ended up going with the vita because of the PS+ value, and psp and PS1 classics backwards compatibility. Vita's actual lineup seems anemic to me, but for what I need a handheld for, it seemed like an ok deal.

How much did you get for PSP? What exactly is the promo? 50% trade in towards anything or just vita? I'm looking to add more to my PS4 pre-order with a NDS Lite and PSP trade in.

The promo was: 50% on all trade ins, and buy 2 get 1 free. The catch is you had to be a rewards member or whatever, so I had to drop $14 on that. I could have gotten better prices on ebay/amazon probably, but I'm lazy and at least this way I know it'll be refurbished for whoever buys it. My PSP was the first run, and interriblecondition. I literally dropped it and broke it into 3-4 pieces several times while I was backpacking asia. I'm amazed I got anything. Some of the prices I got:

psp: $38
4gig mem stick for psp: $17
Burnout revenge psp: $5
~2006 white 360, headset, hard drive, transfer cable, av cable, controller: $140
Ace combat, black ops 2, armored core 4, halo 4: ~$55
Ipod touch: $75

And some assorted accessories for a grand total of $321. I'm pretty happy with that since I was done with every 360 exclusive, have a ps3, haven't touched my ipod since I got a smartphone, and was in dire need of a portable for work.

Sean mentioned this a few pages ago, the increasing frame rates by dropping resolution...

That's how we decide on how to buy cross-con games for the last few years. On the back of the boxes the games always list the highest res. It's usually a surprise which has been better between 360 and ps3, but we don't follow many publishers thus we just pick a game that looks neat and knock it out pretty quickly. We've shared the same XB gold account for years until halo 4, which required us each to have one for the multi-player episodes. That...pissed me off.

I have no doubt we'll -eventually- own an xbone, but it sure as hell won't be within the first 6 months. I know our singular console purchase won't effect anything in the long run but at least we won't be part of the holiday statistics.

Yeah, good until august 31st.
Yeah i already used mine a couple months ago when i was trading in. I am still pretty unsure what to even get for release since the titles i really want arent out till next year.

What day 1 purchases do you guys have in mind? Aside from Watch Dogs - i dont see many passing that up.

I grabbed the dogs bundle. I also had 2 naked systems ordered which I was planning on selling but I canceled those given how strong supply looks for the PS this gen. I figure Xbone will more than likely be in short supply but I'm not willing to support microsoft at this stage.

It is pretty disturbing when game developers don't even understand that a 24 hour check-in isn't required to have a predominately digital and always online experience.

On the plus side he's a currently unemployed developer who had his shit taken away from him by Ubisoft after getting firedtwice. Hopefully he loses his court case against them due to his sheer douchebaggery.

Maybe someone at MS could have researched Steam and found out that it works offline for months at a time.

Maybe they could have made the policy only apply to digital games, or let you bypass the check by inserting the disk.

Maybe, derp when you herp etc.

It doesn't anymore. Two weeks and then you have to reauthorize.

Its a fairly recent change from my understanding.
