Someone did a teardown of both consoles to estimate the costs:Microsoft's Xbox One Costs $90 More to Build Than Sony's PS4 - Arik Hesseldahl - News - AllThingsD

TLDR PS4 costs $381 and XB1 costs $471 (plus $75 for Kinect?) - so neither really spent much above what they are selling it for unlike last generation where Sony was losing an estimated $300 per console at launch. Last generation the consoles were much closer to PC performance at launch as well.

Looks like both game divisions wanted more profitable consoles this generation, what with the whole flirting with bankruptcy thing.

How does a console with inferior hardware cost almost $100 more? The Kinect has to be included in that $471, right?

The Kinect drove the price up, so have no clue why they didn't drop it other then they need people to adopt there new hardware scheme.

I think there new console coming out in Q1, will drop the kinect, and just add voice recognition built into the console.

To buy the camera for the PS4 is another 60 bucks.

The $75 of the Kinect is included in the $471. XB1's ESRAM on the die boosts the CPU price, but the PS4's faster RAM is more expensive as is its GPU, so I am not too sure where the extra cost of the XB1 comes from. Possibly from components related to the video in (connectors, decompression units).

The reason they didn't drop the kinect is because MS knows best. I'm honestly surprised they reversed a lot of their flat out fucking dumb decisions they had at their unveiling.

So what is the deal with all of the PS4 twitch streams? Every one I've randomly clicked on in this thread has looked like total dogshit...streaming resolutions that aren't even close to 480p, much less anything approaching HD.

PC Streams I've watched in the past look great, I've seen a lot of nice 720p streams, but man, I have yet to see a PS4 stream that is even watchable. Most look like they're coming in around 120-240p or so, just pixelated as all hell.

Determined by the streamers upload capability. I've seen some really good streams but those were from people who always stream and have the bandwith. Maybe people are getting throttled or have to configure their router?

I think it comes down to using ESRAM + DDR4 vs DDR5 (what PS4 uses) - at the time MS made that decision they probably thought it was a good one but the cost of DDR5 has dropped considerably. A weird thing about RAM prices is when a new tech comes out the old one usually stays the same price (because they stop making it but people still need it if they have mobo's that don't support the new tech) for a good while.

Like Abe said, but PS4's Twitch app could also use some patching. Since it's a software solution riding on top of the PS4's hardware vs a straight hardware one (capture card + XSplit that the heavy duty streamers use) it uses more bandwidth.

The link says different.

Memory chips came from SK Hynix, and added about $60 to the cost, or about $28 less than what?s found in the PS4.

So what's the verdict? Xbox1 or PS4? None of that bullshit explanations or "depends on what you like" crap. I'm incapable of making my own decisions

Lots of restocking happening recently - not cashing in investments so I'm waiting til next 'payday' but my alerts have been getting tripped constantly on PS4. Target.com for a few hours today, Walmart.com as well, and still some Target stores in my area. (And supposedly Targets web is tied to store stock on a 15 min delay)

The PS4 is a significantly superior piece of hardware that'seasier to develop forplus has more potential down the line with GPGPU Compute. PS4 games are always going to be the best looking and running games when it comes to consoles. It's also $100 less and Sony has a far better track record with exclusives and has a ton of Japanese third party exclusives that the Xbone will never get. It's going to sell more and you're going to have more people to play with on it both domestically and globally. The only downside to it is thatright nowits more limited in some of its multimedia functionality, but that will be patched in soon enough (and the PS3 was by far the best multimedia device of the last generation), however it does have Twitch streaming out of the box while the Xbone doesn't.

The PS4 also has far, far more Indie support if you care about that.

So get a PS4. All the cool kids will be playing on it and it's just simply better.

Only if you are counting the Blu-Ray drive as the deciding factor(as opposed to having to get a separate Blu-Ray drive if you have a 360)

For streaming video, music, & apps, the 360 was superior in almost every way imaginable to the PS4 throughout the vast majority of the last console generation.

Plus if the camera less XBOne is a reality - why not wait a few months and save $100 on something you'll never really use?

I'd disagree - DLNA was very robust unless your router hated it and you couldn't fix the config.

I think this may have been mentioned a few pages back but i did not see it... so much for freedom of speech...

Microsoft has announced that it will silence swearing and cursing players on its Xbox Live online gaming service.
Although Redmond reassured cursing customers that they will still be able to turn the air blue in private chats, they will have to be much more discreet when shooting up some stranger on the other side of the world. As well as this, they will have to be careful when uploading videos featuring naughty words.

From now on, Xbox Live will feature a sin bin system for anyone who cusses too frequently. They will be banned for periods of up to 24 hours.
The issue was first highlighted on Reddit, by a gamer who was f@$*ing furious that he had been booted from Xbox Live for calling someone a d**khead in a video uploaded to Microsoft's Upload Studio.
In a post (which we have corrected slightly to make the writer sound a little less primeval) he said:
"I made a video and said a bad word. It wasn't really a swear in my opinion, just the nickname used for people called Richard.
"Now I am not able to put Kinect videos on my uploads or upload gameplay at all. I have no idea how long this will last. I do understand I shouldn't have said it and know where Xbox is coming from, but I wish there was a disclaimer about it since I had no idea I would be banned for that. Like I said, ignorance isn't an excuse, but I'm just warning you guys in case you didn't know."
Another gamer took to Twitter to claim he had been shown a message which read "choose something else to play" after swearing in a private Skype call. His Xbox then told him he was being booted from a multiplayer game "because of your past behaviour".
Microsoft have issued a statement clarifying the situation. It said:
"To be clear, the Xbox Live Policy & Enforcement team does not monitor direct peer-to-peer communications like Skype chats and calls. Also, we take Code of Conduct moderation via Upload Studio very seriously.
"We want a clean, safe and fun environment for all users. Excessive profanity as well as other Code of Conduct violations will be enforced upon and result in suspension of some or all privileges on Xbox Live. We remain committed to preserving and promoting a safe, secure and enjoyable experience for all of our Xbox Live members."
Some forum dwellers on the official Xbox chatroom have questioned why Microsoft bans potty mouths whilst allowing swearing in game trailers.
"I think it's so over the top considering there are videos on my activity feed of Dead Rising 3 with people being chopped up and Battlefield 3 with the characters of the game saying all the swear words," one poster wrote.
"Just ridiculous and needs to be sorted."
Another wrote:
"Being banned for saying cr*p and plonker on the video stuff is just stupid."
Some posters issued a brave mea culpa admitting to swearing in their videos.
"I was out of control in my video," one wrote. "I said f@@k three times in a humorous way."
