The chemistry has built up pretty well as the season went on, loved the episodes last night.

my eyes bugged out when Miller first saw sim Julie, that was pretty awesome. Amos is pretty much the best character on the show, although Avasarla making that instant connection between being setup and her little explanation to her husband was a close runner up as badass grandma. I didn't really like her character in the books but I am loving every moment she is on the show.

time to re-read the book series now i guess while we wait for season 2, its a pretty bad ass universe they setup and they seem pretty good about pumping out a new book every year. Babylon's Ashes, book 7 of 10, is due out August 2016.

They definitely got everyone right at the end though. I was worried they were going to change some personalities permanently but at the end everyone lined up.

I thought the first half or so of the season was excellent, but it seemed like the acting in the 2nd half was really lackluster or something. I don't know how to describe it, but some of the actors just seemed to be chewing the hell out of scenes toward the last 4 or so episodes. Naomi and Holden being the worst examples of it, in my opinion. Maybe I'm just bitter at the lack of Dawes.

So I need some advice, some of you who have read the books seem bitter at changes, others have liked them. After watching first 2 seasons of GoT I read all of the books before season 3 and have loved watching the show develop with the knowledge of the books as well. Should I read the novels before season 2? Opinions on whether I'll enjoy it more, less?

Exact same boat I'm in. Haven't bought the books yet, so would like the same thoughts

I wouldn't say I am bitter at the changes, most of them are actually quite minor in my opinion. It seemed like they were going with a different personality for some of the people but they seem to have course corrected at the end of this season.

I just read every book last month for the first time. I feel it has enhanced my viewing immensely and would suggest it.

Watched them all, pretty boss story. I gotta wait a whole year for more though? Get your shit together SyFy. Or make more The Magician eps I guess.
Disappointed since, basically, they put in half of the first books, and they're incorporating book 2 along so that season 2 will probably collapse the Leviathan Wakes and Caliban's War together. The ending of S01 is basically a mid-season cliffhanger, not a proper season end.

Spoilage on the bits drawn from book 2 (include elements that aren't shown yet in S01):
That's why Dresden seem to be a Mao underling rather than a big Protogen cheese: they're merging the Protogen and Kwik-Mao corps to simplify the storyline, and we're probably going to see the Ganymede experiments in parallel to the Eros ones. And why you already have Avarasala, Souther and the UN corrupt plot is hatching.

My big problem is that I'm not sure they're going to introduce Sergeant Draper in the story. I hope so. And that Gwendoline Christie is available to play her. But the Ganymede assault should be a kick-ass way to start the season 2.

Reading the books won't hurt as long as you understand that the TV show is altered. a_skeleton_03 is pretty spot on though. Only thing I am particularly bothered with is Miller's Hat.

read the books, the big picture things are so awesome that watching it unfold on screen is fantastic. all the changes are very, very minor and make sense in moving the story forward and making it more understandable for new viewers.

the only thing is that books 3-4 are pretty boring for like the first 75% I'd say, but I think they will end up changing those storylines significantly so be interesting to see what happens if this book gets into seasons 3 & 4. Season 1 covers 3/4ths of book 1, so we are obviously going to bridge into the first half of book 2 in season 2. Book 7 is due out in August and Book 8 is due out in late 2017 - 10 books total.

Holy shit that many books? Well I've been looking for some more good sci fi to read so I think I'm going to dive in and start reading them.

Looking forward to season 2. I hope Holden is done being an unbearable peacenik, Miller and Amos could be awesome together.

Book 6, not 7. Nemesis Games was book 5 only, and Babylon's Ashes (the one this year) is only book 6. Unless you count The Vital Abysss novella as book 6, maybe?

They have a contract for 3 trilogies, 9 books total (not 10, but I guess if you count 6 already, that makes 10). They're getting one book a year so far (unlike some author that must not be named).

There's also a few short stories/novellas in ebook form: The Butcher of Anderson Station, Gods of Risk, The Churn, The Vital Abyss. Inequal, but good.

(if you're wondering, The Butcher of Anderson Station is what went into ep 5, "Back to the Butcher", Gods of Risk is about the background & family of one - hopefully - upcoming character for season 2, The Churn is Amos' backstory, which he refers to briefly during ep 7 when he says "welcome to the churn" to Holden, and The Vital Abyss is about Toth Station, which was referred to at the end of ep 10)

Now, I wish the show would be 9 seasons as well. I mean, if you could do 10 seasons of Stargate SG1, you surely can do 9+ of TheExpanse...

Well, he's slightly different in the show. (finale spoilage)
I mean, he helps Miller killing that guy in the pachinko parlor. With his own hands (well, arm). And he shoots off Kenzo.

And the guy who sends all the data dumps and telling everyone "Earth did it" is Fred Johnson in the show, not Holden.
So, yea, Holden is a more nuanced good guy.

If I remember correctly, SG1 got better ratings in its final season than TheExpansegot in its first.

Syfy doesn't get anywhere near the viewers it got 10 years ago, hell even SGU broke 2 million before it declined. TV these days is literally a) don't be absurdly expensive and b) out-rating the other guy.

Expanseis averaging 1.6m Live+3 apparently, but it's 10pm slot is not as showy for Live numbers. 12 Monkeys was renewed last year with a 1.5m so it's on target with at least some potential to go higher.

Syfy is starting to deliver on the promise to bring the channel back to it's roots 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, Killjoys,Expanse, and I think they signed to do Altered Carbon as well. If they keep pushing in this direction they may get some of their lost viewers back. We can hope. Also, the reason I think they seem to be quick to renew for a second season.

I agree, but mostly just on the last episode. For some reason Naomi and Holden were just too, I don't know, "save the world" for me. Like, the characters felt like they were just trying way too hard to be saints. It kind of annoyed me.

Now, that may be how the books were written. But something about it just seemed incredibly unrealistic.
