Unless you live in a shithole state like Mississippi, there are plenty of programs for mentally ill/homeless. Not to mention, food stamps, welfare, disability, etc. You're so much smarter than the rest of us, you should easily be able to find out about these programs. Instead, you could take the lazy way out and just complain about it, like you seem to have done most of your adult life.
Mist needs to read some Fromm. Society itself is quite objectively, mentally insane, so 'normalcy' in our society is actually a fucked up state of mind. You can't be responsive to the world without being saddened very often.

You're an idiot if you think anyone can live off that in the north east. Her SSI disability plus food stamps is not enough to cover her basic expenses, pay for care, and pay for repairs to the house. That's the whole fucking reason I'm here.

And the reason you should leave. Your mother is/was unwilling to fix her shit when you weren't there (and when you *WERE* there as a kid) so she's fucking your life up even more and you're letting her do it. That's not healthy for either of you. Have her put a reverse mortgage on the house and go into a nursing home if she can't take care of herself. Get free of her influence. Choose to live a more positive life, and work to make it so. Being depressed is a death spiral you either choose to go with or choose to get out of. It will take time and hard work, and maybe drugs if it's physiologically affected, but you can get out if you want to.
I will say this in all seriousness. You absolutely can choose to leave "family" and not be a monster. It will hurt but you will get over it most likely. You might not but it's worth a chance.

If you had a kid or two or a wife or husband your flight and preservation skills would have kicked in already. Right now emotionally it is easier for you to stay because then you are a victim of circumstances with no control over the outcome.

I mean, I can totally do this, if we're talking about strength of character or what-not. It's just that I keep getting so close to clawing out of this hole (financially, for the most part, but also emotionally) and so close to 'making it' that every little setback is excruciating.
I'll feel a lot better in a semester with my masters degree in hand, so long as I can just fucking keep it together until then.
