You're right, it's just collecting massive amounts of data and storing it for later use. Still not ok with me. I was pissed about the Patriot Act, decrying it as an open door that could be expanded and abused. 10 years later, look what we have, an expanded and abused system allowed by the Patriot Act. I don't trust our current, money corrupted government to not continue the expansion and abuse of the system. The reaction of this administration to the enlightenment of the situation is clear enough evidence to me to mistrust the system. The current president ran on a platform of dismantling this shit, and instead he chose to expand upon it.Well according to the information we have right now, the government isn't spying on you. Crisis averted.
Which is why I'm still here and not trying to board the next plane to wherever. I'm pissed at the blantant lies this president fed to the people. I'm pissed that here we are, 10 years after the PA was put into place, that what exactly people were worried about happening, is happening. I'm pissed that the news for the past few weeks has been about this fucking guy, and not about the system he exposed. We don't even know details about that storage, we don't know anything beyond their capability to collect. It is probably a little early to be talking about moving to another country.
Im not sure how that makes Ellsberg's situation any better. if anything its a clear proof of how broken the system was and still is.Motive is subjective, and good intentions don't erase negative consequences of actions committed in their name.
A pretty key difference between a guy like Ellsberg and Snowden is that Snowden didn't even try to use the system in place to fight what he thought was illegal practice (it isn't, but whatever). He went straight to this shit. Ellsberg tried for years to work within that system.
And we never will which is part of the problem. We don't even know details about that storage,
Maybe. But what is reasonable to expect them to release? As I said, if they mark it TS they have already judged that its release would cause "exceptionally grave damage to national security." How much of that are they supposed to release? Obviously people wouldn't be satisfied there, some people would always want more disclosure and the nature of the program and the agency is that they can't release that information. It's a no win.And we never will which is part of the problem.
We have Manning's case as an example of what would happen to Snowden. And lawl at these motherfuckers talking about secret criminal courts and being tortured with rats and lobotomized and shit.
Wikipedia_sl said:Manning said the guards began issuing conflicting commands, such as "turn left, don't turn left," and upbraiding him for responding to commands with "yes" instead of "aye."
Wired_sl said:Manning was placed on suicide and prevention of injury watch for months, despite recommendations from psychiatrists that he be taken off that status; he was kept in solitary confinement in his cell for more than 23 out of 24 hours a day; he was was forced to sleep without a comfortable blanket and had his slumber disrupted repeatedly during the night by guards; and on at least one occasion he was forced to stand naked for morning count.
Nine months of solitary confinement and abuse until the media outrage made them stop. Long term solitary confinementcauses permanent mental illness and is considered a form of torture. He was also forbidden 'unathorized exercise', only allowed 1 hour a day.Wikipedia_sl said:The detention conditions prompted national and international concern. Juan E. Mendez, a United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture published a report saying the detention conditions had been "cruel, inhuman and degrading." In January 2011, Amnesty asked the British government to intervene because of Manning's status as a British citizen by descent, though Manning's lawyer said he did not regard himself as a British citizen.[61] The controversy claimed a casualty in March that year when State Department spokesman Philip J. Crowley criticized Manning's treatment and resigned two days later.[62] In early April, 295 academics (most of them American legal scholars) signed a letter arguing that the treatment was a violation of the United States Constitution.
You spent a lot of time citing a military case here referencing what might happen to a civilian. Pretty epic fail, didn't even read all of it.We have Manning's case as an example of what would happen to Snowden.
"The Rules for Courts Martial (RCM) 707 states that under normal circumstances the accused should be brought to trial within 120 days of charges having been brought."It took them over 1,000 days to start his trial after intentionally delaying the process."prosecutors have allegedly characterized "federal weekends and holidays" as "excludable delays." Coombs says there is no case law supporting the maneuver.
The abuse of the law never ends.

The defense is also not allowed to present evidence as to Manning's intent, nor present any witness or document showing that no harm resulted from his actions. The worst that happened from the cable leaks was"one Ethiopian journalist had to leave his country and the U.S. government said it had to relocate several sources."according to Manning's biographer. So the prosecution is going to call141 witnesses to try and prove harm while the judge is only allowing ONE witness for the defense. 33 witnesses will be heard in closed sessions-- so the trial won't be secret, just the testimony. Makes me feel MUCH better.
Stop right there. We have Manning's case as an example of what would happen to Snowden.
