The only issue I have with my fan is it sometimes "ticks." Usually it is worse on medium setting and if I switch it to low or high it goes away. I can't sleep in the summer without some breeze on me while I sleep though. And my ceiling is vaulted in my bedroom so I need it in reverse in the winter to kick some of that warm air back down.

If you really buy a fan just for noise, I'd buy an air filter instead. At least it'll do something useful.

I'm not sure about that one, but I've been using one of theseAmazon.com: Marpac DOHM-DS, Natural White Noise (actual fan inside) Sound Machine, Tan: Health Personal Carefor years. They're amazing. I'd say any mechanical white noise machine would work well.
