Yeah, true, I was just referring to the fact that the movie went out of its way to show it via Natalie Portman's dialogue when she was being examined by the Asgardians. It's the sort of thing that could easily have been glossed over, so I liked how they specifically pointed it out.

I imagine it was left vague on purpose.

One person I saw it with assumed Loki killed him, and another assumed Loki snuck in and Odin was off doing something else. Plus Anthony Hopkins is getting up there in age, if he croaks before Thor 3 they can easily write him out now!
This world is not ready for the majesty that is:
THE THOR FORCE

Sutekh please don't serious post useful points. It throws off my universal disregard of you.

Yeah, I figured that the whole point was to be a cliffhanger, but I just thought it was sort of strange that no one had even speculated up to this point.

I just read a pretty good opinion piece (on aicn maybe?) about loki being the only good/compelling villain currently in the marvel movies. Marvel is basically using him as a crutch and threatening to play the character out since literally every other villain they have portrayed has been completely disposable after one movie. I really hope he is too busy pretending to be Odin to pop up in any of the next few movies.

I was the opposite, although I can understand why an audience might react differently. Freya's death was unexpected to me, and it was clear from her fight with the Dark Elf that she was pretty badass. I was stunned they'd go as far as to kill Thor's Mom who even though she's not a main character per say, wasn't a throwaway character. Loki on the other hand, we never really had any doubt that Loki was faking it so getting upset about it would have been weird to me.
its kindof part of the, not gods thing in the movie universe. just aliens. Besides Odin outright saying, "we are not gods" in this movie. and loki's only response being, we live 5000 years.
There is no Ragnarok cycle, there is no Odin force. No Hel, no golden apples of Idun, no rebirth, and so on. no magic at all.
The director said he died in an interview, and this is in addition to Hopkins saying he doesn't want to do more. If loki killed Odin, then the might of asgard would have gone to Thor. He would have known immediately.
Frigga dying in the comics would be a very big deal.
That said. nothing says they can't retcon a bit, and inject some in.
hell making the movie ABOUT Ragnarok because Frigga and Odin are dead, would totally make sense. And a rebirth of Asgard, new younger Odin/Frigga.

i saw this on a semi poor quality copy so i ended up missing all the DE dialogue and i couldnt fully enjoy the visuals. that being said this movie was alright. i liked it better than the original thor. i liked the asgard stuff. i hat natalie portman's intern, fucking hate her. and portman herself wasnt too hot either. i saw some star wars and lotr references, but it wasnt overdone. worst thing about the movie was it got a little too jokey at times. thor was good. idris elba was badass as usual. loki was cool, chicks love the actor so keep expecting to see him more and more

my theory about the end.
Odin is not dead, he doesnt die, least as far as i know, in that animated thor vs hulk movie when Odin got his ass kicked he went into his resting tube to recover and sleep. so he may pop back up again at some point. the after credits scene with the collector was cheesy and so was the thor and natalie portman scene at the very end

the best part of this movie was it really made me want to log into EQ again and crank up my Guise of The Deceiver mask on my barb shaman!

I don't remember anyone addressing this point about the ending:
Where is Odin?
I'm assuming he fell into the Odinsleep again. In Thor he got a little startled by Loki talking back at him and he fell asleep, albeit briefly. In Thor 2, Odin has probably not rested since the Bifrost was destroyed (apparently Asgard has had a rough time keeping the nine worlds at peace since the first movie). My guess is that he fell into the Odinsleep again and Loki stashed him somewhere.

As for Thor 3, I'm betting the big bad will beSurtur. Can't really go wrong with demonic fire giants, and it'd allow them to cross into Doctor Strange territory.

The Odinsleep, assuming they incorporate it, isn't a bad guess. Odin seemed tired in this movie, he even winces at one point (I didn't notice the first time I saw it, but noticed it when I saw it again today with my dad) during the battle, before he has actually expended himself in any meaningful way. Unless they cut scenes from the fight where Odin is actually hit by something, there is no reason for him to be in pain other than his time is ending. It would also explain why he is so eager to pass, and angry that Thor is unworthy of, the throne of Asgard. he was ready for his nap.

What Happened to Odin in 'Thor 2'?
"However, director Alan Taylor was a little more blunt in his answer, confirming that Odin is definitely dead and that it was a specific decision they made in the process of developing the film:

That was a big twist. It took us a while to realize that we were actually going to kill him. And then it took us a while to realize that we were going to do that at the end.

As for Hopkins himself? Well, he's even more direct than his director:

He's dead. I've done two, that's enough."
But they could retcon it. again, Ragnarok, have a new actor. or people seem to forget he went into Odinsleep in the first movie already... so yeah, they could do that again.

What I mean is that we don't really get to see just how insanely powerful Thor is because he's always fighting stuff that's pretty much on his level or so alien to us (as humans) that we can't judge the power level. I would love for a scene of Thor smashing apart a tank or something, just to show his power in a way that can be easily measured for people who aren't familiar with the character.
Right. Thor on Asgard is just another super strong guy among many. Hell, your average Asgardian is stronger than Captain America. It's only when Thor is on Midgard that you see how insanely powerful he is. I've always enjoyed Thor on Earth more than Asgard in the comics.

I dunno you get a good idea of his strength when he fought the Hulk in Avengers. Sure he was losing but he didn't get squashed.
Thor wasn't losing, it was a tie. And the difference is that Thor holds back, Hulk doesn't. Thor and Hulk could fight for days or weeks without a clear winner.

Even if Odin is dead they will still need Anthony Hopkins for Thor 3 given that Loki is masquerading as Odin.

i assume the guard who told odin they found a body was actually loki. he then tricked odin into getting captured, maybe drawing him out to come look at the body and then having him imprisoned or just locking him into his sleep tube. either way. Odin is not dead. you can kill thor's mom but you can never kill the All-Father, even if anthony hopkins dies before the next thor, they will cast a new actor to play Odin

It's blatantly obvious the guard who told Odin they found a body was Loki, you even see Loki's body on Svartalfheim transform in to the same guard. Odin can absolutely die, just like Bor died before him. What actually happens in the comic series is that Odin banishes himself from Asgard to roam in space forever because he failed to protect his family.

Besides with Odin out of the way it sets up a great story line for Thor to inheirt the Odinforce, which is probably going to be needed to take out Thanos.

The Collector scene had a serious Doctor Who vibe, right down to the fact that they used a TV camera to shoot it.

I wonder if this means that Guardians of the Galaxy will have a Doctor Who vibe. That seems like an interesting way to go with it, but risky.

The movie was a lot of fun. Loki truly is the bad guy that you want to win.

The Collector was absolutely ridiculous. Like, Super Mario movie or Buckaroo Bonzai levels of camp. I know absolutely nothing about Guardians of the Galaxy beyond the fact that Starfox is in it though.

Thor inheriting the odinforce for avengers 2 would make him completely outclass the rest of the avengers even more, right?

I'd love to have a movie more devoted to Loki, but his strength seems to be mocking the people that are center stage, and so he'd probably do a lot worse as the focus.
yup.

In Avengers 2 the Avengers should fucking get their asses kicked at the end. Have a real downer of an ending, with the Avengers beaten/broken. Hulk banished. Earth conquered/enslaved, Cap reluctantly working for whatever force has taken over earth. Tony Stark critically wounded and near death, Thor returning to Asgard to find Loki on the throne. Think Empire Strikes Back ending but WAY worse. Then the final films for each of them (IM4, Cap 3, Thor 3, Hulk 2) should involve each of them getting/building/discovering their ultimate mojo-mcguffin, leading into an Avengers 3 two hour long climactic battlegasm.
