I didn't think the first episode of season 1 was that great. I honestly wasn't that pulled in until episode 3 or 4.

What do you think the odds are that the contamination is a scam? That VV's cartel gives some fake reports about the contamination, buys the land at bargain, "removes" the contamination (possibly with federal subsidy) which dramatically increases the price?
If it's like the city of Vernon, the pollution is real, because super lax or even non-existent regulation for the handling of toxic wastes is used to attract industries. Still, since with these kind of things no tit is left unsucked, they probably get federal decontamination money.

Yeah. I really loved the 3 seconds shot from a crane to show McAdams getting kicked out of a casino throwing a plastic cup. It was awesome getting to see the action up close like that! Or cutting back and forth like 10 times from VV to the bar, back to VV, back to the bar, Coolin back to VV, to Coolin, the bar, before we finally just got a shot of them sitting across from eachother.... ooooh shit they were sitting at the same table the whole time! Daaaamn!

Its more complex than that but yea that's more creative writing (Pizzolatto) than the director side of things but most people dont even pick up on these type of things. People cant even remember characters names never mind a certain scene that was done using a tracking shot or had amazing screenplay absence of dialogue etc.

I think this next episode will frame things a lot more and people will stop bitching about how scattered shit seems. I, for one, am glad they got shit moving by the end of the first episode. Arent there only 8 episodes?

Hrm. So if the writer is in charge of cameras and how to shoot a scene, then what the fuck is the director doing? What are we all agreeing Justin Lin is good at, if not setting up the shots and deciding how to shoot a scene and, umm, like directing the actors and stuff? Are we saying Justin Lin is a good director, because he's good at simply standing there with a writer in his ear doing exactly what the writer is saying? That sounds like the best job ever. I want a job called director where I'm not actually directing anything at all!

They are given the scipt/screenplay and your bitching about how the episode kept jumping around VV and other characters, that has more to do with editing not camera shots ect. I didnt have any issues with camera Angles and loved the scene with VV and Colin at the table with the music.

And your complaints happen in any show thats trying to introduce lots of characters in the premier

I'm just trying to learn how this works. So the director didn't direct the crew to shoot each character from a certain angle in the bar, or cut away shots, or the like? So, what does the director do, then? I mean, they're given a script/screenplay, and the writer has decided how every scene is shot right down to where the cameras are, how the scene is set up, whether they're going to have a crane for a 3 second segment of a scene, whether they're going to shot a handful of angles of the same two actors sitting at a bar without revealing they're sitting at the same table, etc?. Is the writer right there on set directing the action? Does that make the writer the director and the director is actually just a buddy on the payroll not having to do anything? Or the director is just an assistant writer, and the writer is writing the direction into the screenplay on the spot as the scene is being shot? Or maybe the director is just scouting locations and stuff for the writer, so the writer can better set up a scene being shot and direct the action? Maybe we should stop calling Justin Lin a director and just start calling him an assistant writer?

I didn't have any issues with the camera shots. I said they were great. Now I'm learning it had nothing to do with the director, so I'm not sure who to give credit to. And I guess that Funkanunka guy that didn't do directing in the first season as the direct shouldn't be given credit since it was all Pizzolatto's writing. Why did Pizzolatto even hire those directors if they aren't doing anything? Seriously, I'm just very confused now, please clear it up.

the director directs the actors and how they act in a scene, the director of photography directs the cameras and how the scene is framed, though i dont think each acts exclusively. the editor cuts it all together.

So the director said "hey, VV and Coolin, I need you both to sit in that booth...." and their job is done. The direct of photography will handle the camera angles, along with the writer, and the editor has ultimate power to cut away to the chick singing and back and forth on each of them individually as many times as he sees fit.

Man, I want to be a director. You're basically just doing nothing! And on IMBD you're the first person listed on cast and crew, and have your own personal assistant, and have like 9 assistant directors and all you really did was told actors where to stand so the cinematography and writer could direct the scene and the editor get final word on how he wanted it cut. Best job ever! But, sorry, that means I'm not going to praise Justin Lin's work then.

Sorry, Justin Lin didn't really do much of anything, so this is kind of a dumb statement:

meh, justin lin is an excellent director, i would put him side by side with fukanaga.
I guess they are equals though, and are excellent at not having to actually do anything!

Oh, and so sayeth Chuk, so sayeth us all!
