i dunno whats going on with that picture, the programming president of HBO seems happy with pizza boy.
HBO Defends Pizzolatto - Hollywood Reporter
But Lombardo did not appear phased by any of the critics' qualms - and he came with the viewership stats to justify his continued pleasure with the series' performance. He noted that neither this season, nor the previous critically lauded one with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, was intended or expected to draw such a big audience - but draw it has. True Detective boasts an average 12 million viewers this season, which has it pacing 1 million north of season one.

"Nic Pizzolatto is one of the best writers working in television and motion pictures today," Lombardo added of his divisive True Detective creator and showrunner, before teasing that he enjoyed the finale. "I think he takes a big swing. I think the show ends with as satisfying an end as any show I've seen."

HBO took its time before commissioning the second season of True Detective, thanks in great part to Pizzolatto trying to pin down a new story for the anthology. Word on a third season may take just as long.

"I'd love to do another season," Lombardo said, noting that the ask to Pizzolatto was already out there. "I haven't asked every one of the 12 million viewers who is watching, but I think what he's doing is so much bolder, braver and satisfying that what I'm seeing in film. I'd happily be in business with him for a long time."

I liked the detective characters in S1, but I couldn't give less of a shit about the actual plot.

I like S2 more overall as a setting even if I have no idea what's happening still.

I was really rooting for VV to seriously kill this role the whole time, but I think...in my gut...I feel like this entire season would have been astronomically better had he been replaced with someone better suited for the part. Oh, well. I typically am the guy who can enjoy slow burn stuff that is more story and less action or complicated themes and dialogue but even this isn't hitting that spot for me. Something is missing from the show in a very large way but I still am not sure what it is. It just feels empty and disjointed.

I haven't read this thread but I have to say despite the fact that I was fairly tuned out in the first few episodes and thus have no idea what is going on now, I have enjoyed the last 3 episodes quite a bit. If the finale is awesome I may have to go back and re-watch the first half of the season. Perhaps even more controversially, the opening music has really grown on me and now I don't fast forward it so I can hear the different lyrics every week.

I bet the DVD sales paint a better picture of what audience thinks of this season than the ratings. S1 is why I watched S2 and now I'm just finishing it out because the seasons are so short, but I'm certainly not into it like I was last season. I own S1 on blu-ray, but I have no intention of buying S2 or even re-watching it on demand. It just doesn't merit a repeat viewing.

I thought the opening was awesome from episode 1. My biggest complaint about the show is how every scene has a character trying to say something profound instead of having a normal conversation that moves the plot.

I watched Rudy last night for the first time in a very long time and I was blown away when I saw VV is the ND QB.

the dude has been working for 26 years. here he is in 21 jump street in 1989 at 6:16

he gives off this vibe like he just got into acting and so you should excuse his terrible performance, but he has been in the business long enough to know better.

Honestly, we should probably wait until the end of Vaughn's career before we judge his acting ability. It's stupid to judge until we see how it ends. I mean, one or two good roles to finish his career could really turn things around and be worth the wait! And I heard his last movie will be 3 hours long! There's still plenty of time for Vaughn's past and current movies to somehow be made good by the end of his career if he has a few good roles!

Yeah, me too. I don't put this even in the same ballpark as S1, but I have gone from "this sucks" to "this isn't that bad" over the last couple episodes and I could see myself getting as far as "pretty good" by the end depending on how it goes.

Come on, we fucking knew it would be impossible to be anything but a letdown after the combination of the character of Rustin + Matt McLincon's performance. That was some once in a lifetime awesome.

Farrell is TERRIFIC in this. It's just the fact that nobody is surprised by that.

It's just that the plot is fucking stupid and the dialogue is so uneven.

Whomever said this was an unfunny version of Inherent Vice had it right.

Of course it was going to be virtually impossible to recreate what made S1 so good. I went into this season knowing that, with guarded and forgiving expectations. This season it has been the sort of show I would have waited until after it was over to watch the whole thing in a couple of sittings. It's not must see for me, even though I still watch week-to-week.

Ferrell is the best part of it. He's been pretty good. I don't know if it's possible for a solid performance on his part to carry the rest of it though.

Farrell has had the most best parts, but he's had a lot of bad parts too, and I don't personally find him very interesting as an actor. He can't consistently deliver a line with any level of charm, humor, quirk, or nuance. His range goes from brooding seriousness tinged with anger, to brooding seriousness lined with anger and a louder voice. In that pocket he's pretty good at what he does, but it's one dimensional and flat. It would maybe be more interesting if all the other leads weren't trying the exact same approach when it's even more out of their comfort zones, but still, that doesn't make him great, he just isn't as terrible as the others who are even more limited or have even worse parts.
