In the end that was pretty classic noir. The ugly world, remains ugly, the ones who try to redeem or escape their past fail (but possibly open a door for other less tainted characters) and the story is more about the trajectory of the flawed (anti-)heroes in a flawed society than the crime/investigation that kick-starts it. As mentioned earlier in the thread, we also got a good dose of classic incomprehensible LA corruption story, except, in now classic True Detective fashion, letting some time pass to have another go at the investigation allows to make everything comprehensible (but not right).
My main beef is that it should have went full Twin Peaks, and make everything eerie with everyone spouting strange, distanciating, unnatural lines or, like the first season, put a very strange guy in the middle of regular people, but, here, it's somewhere in the middle so it's just grating and hit and miss.
Also, I would watch a special about the two women, the kid and Nails in South America.
