You need to define "respected media" here.
"Not infowars"

The only reason Fox News and the like even cared about this story is they were all waiting around with raging hardons for someone to start shooting so they could make this "Obama's Waco." They already had bumper stickers printed and everything. Once that didn't happen only the fringe nutters gave a shit.

this is a pre civil war view of america as "these united states" and not "THE united states"
But Nevada didn't exist as it does today until the end of the civil war.

I have a hunch that Bundy was home schooled. And not the fancy liberal book-learning kind of home schooling.

The 'these united states' people believe that the post-civil war federal government overreached in its handling of the west (in addition to everywhere else). So they're not saying we should go back to the good old days of Nevada being a free state, but rather that the federal government should have never intervened in Nevada in the first place.

Don't ask them what Nevada would be like if the Federal Govt didn't finance the hoover dam and the highway/rail system.

If the south had won and the USA had become a loose collection of autonomous states, Nevada wouldn't need roads anyway - they'd still be using horse drawn carriages. States with actual industry and wealth would have seceded together ages ago.

States rights = most of the USA would have never become anything more than what we now consider to be third world shitholes.

That seems as presumptive as US Citizens who think their lives would be drastically better without a strong federal govt.

counterpoint, without strong federal government we wouldn't be engaged in a world empire that's been running on a wartime budget (1/4 to 1/3rd defense spending) since the 1930's

on the other hand, you wouldn't have half the world enslaved to maintain your standard of living.#

but then again, the bundy bunch doesn't strike me as the type of people who need a new smartphone every 6 months and all the other consumerist shit we've come accustomed to

So you think that China and Vietnam etc would be BETTER off if the US wasn't buying a ton of shit from them? You know those factories aren't forcing anyone to work there right?

I don't really disagree with your overall premise, I think trade is a good thing. But both China and Vietnam have plenty of forced labor:

Fair enough, but those people aren't working in an iPhone factory. From what I've heard those Foxconn jobs that somebody writes an expose about every few months are generally considered very desirable jobs compared to the alternatives in the area.

the suicide rate is so high in china that foxconn's relatively smaller rate looks high if you don't look at the overall suicide rate.

Have you ever been to the States? I think the people you are imagining as this Bundy bunch are prime Wal-Mart clientele.
