Sounds like the further from land keys got blasted pretty bad which I guess is expected as that is where it made initial landfall at cat 4. Sounds like they are saying 25% of houses destroyed and about 60% suffering major damage. That is going to take a while to get back up repaired if the damage is that extensive. Sounds like some parts of the keys were starting to get some power back yesterday and the water system apparently seems okay but there is still a boil order as they do full testing.

How the fuck does a nursing home allow 6 elderly to die from illness related to heat from no AC. These people are more compromised than I even am sitting in a building with no AC/fans that is like 90 degrees with 100 heat index. I hope whoever was running it is attached to a trawler line and dredged around the Keys for days on the coral.

6000 watt portable generator will run a window unit and a fridge/freezer. I keep one stored and pull it out and put it in a window during long power outages. If nothing else I get the room cool before going to bed.

We bought a new window AC this year even though we have central AC because health shit. I am shocked how little energy my 8000 btu AC uses and how effective it is at cooling half our 1600 sq foot house. It uses 630 watts of power or about 10% of the main AC. But using it, the main AC hardly ever kicks on. Wasn't that many years ago a 5000 btu window AC used 600 watts.

I hit a light pole when I was in high school on a snowy day.

City ended up charging me about $900. I can't imagine for scrap it's worth very much. Not sure what they were expecting to get out of it.

Olebass, what kind of window unit did you get? I'm in the market for one to put in before next summer for my gym. Although I may go up to 10,000 BTU's.

Frigidaire. Window-Mounted Room Air Conditioner Units by Frigidaire
They have 4-8 models per BTU range. Half are 1-2 year old models( still being sold due to stock ) so make sure which one you want in advance and search by that model number for best deal in gooooooooogle, or bing or whatever you use.

The site I linked is useful because for me I had power restrictions due to the fact I have 3 monitors, gaming pc, tv, dvr, blu ray, modem/router, fish tank, 2 lights, 2 fans, charger for ecig, ceiling fan, and weather station, printer, sound bar, pc speaker system also on that same line.

10,000 would cool a hell of a area to. My 8000 btu doesn't seem to have issues keeping the 3 bedroom/2 bath part of the house cool if I leave the door open. It for sure will freeze me out of my room and it is 15x12 with a 5x10 bathroom. I had a old 6000 btu previously that cooled it just fine too, but ran more. It finally burned itself up though. I think it used more power than my 8000. The energy star one is about 200 watts less than the non ES model.

The higher the BTU the heavier they get, if that matters for you. Got to remember got to put the damn thing in when the power goes out lol. I only use it to cool one room so not really demanding.
