Maybe, maybe not. The slow EV's like the Nissan Leaf never sold well here either. The prius is slow as balls, probably has something to do with it. Maybe they don't care if the cars have 90hp in Japan.
90hp is more than enough in Japan.

Average surface street speed limit is 30kmh ie 18.6 mph. multilane surface roads are 40kmh ie 24.8 mph

Even their "interstate hwys" which are all toll roads and not really even used are only 80kmh ie 49.7 mph

That whole chart is misleading though because it doesn't include kei cars ie minicars which are orders of magnitude more popular than "full sized" vehicles.

Yes in America a prius or yaris are considered tiny but they are full sized vehicles in japan which have trouble fitting down certain side streets and residential areas (not enough space for 2 of them to pass one another on a residential street) A Prius in Japan is like riding around in an og H1 hummer in the US. It's street legal sure but its the entire width of the fucking road.

Everyone drives tiny little 2-3 cylinder kei cars/trucks/minivans that max out at 50mph, weigh 500 lbs and are made of plastic.

Tesla complete worldwide sales is barely twice the number of hybrids Toyota sold in the US for 2024. Doesn't seem that compelling.
There's room in the market for BEV's and hybrids both for sure, they have different strengths and weaknesses.

That is ridiculously slow compared to Teslas.
That is ridiculously fast for anyone in the market for a Prius. If they drove a Tesla, it would be like the guy that got PTSD from shooting a rifle, only he'd probably veer into oncoming traffic while crying.

It’s definitely more speed/torque than you need for normal driving. The slowest 0-60 for a Tesla is for the current year single motor Model 3, 5.8s. That’s in ‘standard’ drive mode, the eco/relaxed is slower but in not sure of the numbers. It’s what I would typically leave ours set to.

We had a loaner model X for a few days earlier this year. I only had a chance or 2 to really let it rip. Easily the fastest thing I’ve driven at 0-60 in 3.8, right around 700hp and lbft of torque. Im curious what the percentage of “accidents within the first week of purchase” is.

0-60 is fun… but the kinda odd, whoa, is when your on the interstate cruising along at like 70 when you need to hit it and your just suddenly at 95-100 without feeling a thing.

For sure, I will say that there have been a handful of times where having the extra power helped to avoid potential accidents.
