These arguments are kind of void though. Every expansion in recent years has had flying disabled until like a year after launch, after a person completed Pathfinder (almost every quest in each zone), and after the content has been traversed very thoroughly.
And I bitch endlessly about it every expansion.

Travel time is a known slippery slope. You make one concession, then two, then three then several years later you're in BFA and it's retardation. Yes travel time needs some conveniences, portals, flightmasters, whistles, one-off port scrolls and reputation trinkets are great. But nullifying all zone design with the axiomatic hammer of personal flight is inherently terrible design.

The world needs to be dangerous and you need to want to be out in it doing shit. It's not really an MMO if that's not there.

I think this makes the point Lead Dev Soandso was speaking to in his Twitch stream.

At some point, the devs just threw out all of the rules Vanilla used to create a really immersive world. If you're developing with a certain standard in mind you can't just up and say "now mounts fly" to add flavor to an expasion.

When you throw out the rules, you're allowed to design a lazy world where the only thing new xpacs have to offer are features that don't actually belong in the world.

Really insightful video.

Looks like all the cool things they added are irrelevent because the difficulty is so easy.

You know what though if there was ever an opportunity for Brad "High All The Time" McQuaid to get some funding for his vaporware now would be the fucking time. Right now you could show investors that there is a market for an old style more RPG centric MMORPG to be released and the audience in eating it up. Then again you would probably be better setting your money on fire.

I genuinely believe this will happen. Now is the time to really ride them coat tails, all these videos coming out lately about how vanilla plays pretty much describe what Pantheon is supposed to be.

Supposed to be and will be are two different things, though

Travel time in wow without flying mounts was shit. Part of the reason I refused to dump engineer is the portal devices could literally save you 20+ minutes of fucking travel tedium.

Stop lying to yourselves. In eq1, if you had the option to AFK the entire run to ToV or insta port there or fly over all the shit, you would have taken that without hesitation.

There are tons and tons of games out there with efficient and interactive lobbies, that use excellent pairing algorithms to place you with randoms, or allow premade groups to participate, and offer tons and tons of content inside controlled instanced environments... and they do it better than any mmo. When you start making your game more and more convenient to access - you make travel a breeze, and then you're removing the need for beta cucks to put effort into forming groups, and you remove shitters from being blacklisted out of raid content and even make raids that are a joke to win, and let everyone access the good stuff automatically from a hub, and standardize gear with just incremental stat increases that are all heavily balanced, and remove unique rare chase items, and blend the servers in together, and... Eventually these conveniences and QOL changes result in a mmo shell hosting any other online video game.

The same issue hits everquest. People scream and scream for stuff like instanced everything, fv loot (can trade everything), unlimited multiboxing... and can't realize how much this turns eq into a single player game with minimal variance on where you go, and actual sp rpgs will shit on someone playing an mmo alone.

Fuck flight. It was good in Aion, of all things, but it wasn't in wow. Worse, fuck instantly porting into dungeon and in an autoformed group without travel at all.

Fuck group finder. Have a lfg tool and sort features and notes, yes, but make it so finding groups is not just /lfg on and wait a minute unless you picked a bottleneck class. Make taking personal initiative meaningful - the people who can't muster the willpower here are in my personal experience almost always beta pussies, virgins, and shit job losers. No ethugging here - being unable to get off your ass in a game is a telltale sign of a pathetic person irl, and the moment games cater to these folks with automation so they can do nothing and socialize the quality plummets. Fuck them, or unfuck them really, learning to do some work is a good life skill.

So many people are coming back to wow classic (or eq tlps) and still want all the quality of life bullshit that made the game hollow in the first place. If you want that shit, play the game (bfa) that has it, don't run from it and then argue for the same concepts as if flying mounts and groupfinder arent exactly what led wow to becoming a lobby sim garbage pile. It's no different to me than socialists who flee a shithole then want socialism, or muslims who migrate out of some polygamous war ridden east africa hellscape and then want their goatfucking religion made into law.

Nixxiom has been shitting on BFA since its launched, I'm sure they're aware.

Also asmon coming in strong with this clip

He's exactly right, especially about the rewarding nature of classic vs the stupid character weakening in live.

You're not wrong about any of those definitions. Honestly, you aren't wrong about your preferences either, because we all have our own idea of fun. But, for a lot of us, the evolution of the game from Vanilla to BFA has made "us" feel like it's no longer a multiplayer game with adventure and danger. It's a lobby that allows us to click a button and get to somewhere instantly and it is that today because of how the game evolved from the onset, starting with flying. Flying was the first convenience/compromise that led to more and more conveniences and compromises that led to so many people feeling like the game lost its way to cater to a player base that just wanted instant gratification.

I agree, the game is basically WOW-Destiny-Anthem GAAS bullshite

I think there's room in the market for both kinds of games. I was excited about flying in TBC but in retrospect I don't think its benefits outweighed the negatives.
