Fixed.

Seriously, to pretend WoW didn't have guild sites that were as popular as FoH is silly.
Oh ya, EJ. Never really understood the praise they got... Don't think they had a single world first. It was all D&T, Fury, Curse, Nihilum and Afterlife(woot!) iirc.

They were popular because they had a ton of info and it was the place to go for strategy. The world first guilds weren't about to share info on encounters and when EJ started doing it all the theorycrafters came on board and it was well moderated (though it started to get a little too moderated) so it became huge.

Oh ya. I guess they were cool for that.... Sorta

I guess nostalgia is a fickle mother fucker. Do you really believe that WoW invented "worthless," pixelated carrots for varying degrees of challenge? Why raid anything past Nagafen when you can just watch a video of Vox, VS, or Trak, right? They all just give +gooder items and once you've seen one you've seen them all.

Twats.

Items were way cooler with far longer lifespans in EQ

That was more of an itemization issue than anything. For the first couple expansions, you had pretty limited options for haste (a must for melee). However as the game went on, you saw expansion "resets" because they realized it was pretty dumb for someone to be using a Kunark item well into PoP, not to mention it removed upgrade slot "carrots" from the game.

This fucking thread...

I don't know. I agree with both sides.

Problem is, I like WoW. I do. I don't deny it, but I don't have the time anymore for what it took to be bleeding edge like in tbc. Yet I am not interested in waiting a whole fucking xpac to see a raid. I paid for the box and sub. I miss the challenge. When I do raid normals and heroics its a breath of fresh air. But I'd cancel if lfr wasn't there because I just do not have steady time. But I agree I miss the difficulty and exclusivity.

So fuck. I don't know.

I suppose it comes down to what you get out of the game. If I cared about my 'standing' amongst the general population in the game, what you describe might be important to me ... but what keeps me subbed is VERY simple and what I alluded to earlier - I very much enjoy beating tough raid encounters with a group of people I like. For that, there isn't anything that comes close atm (Rift came closest in terms of quality of raiding).

I get that there are people who feel their accomplishments are diminished because the plebes get access to easy-mode versions of the content, but I'm just completely apathetic to their experiences or even their opinion of guilds like mine.
I know there are a lot of people out there that don't give a shit on a personal level if someone else has access to easy mode or whatever. You do the hard mode shit, you love it, and you enjoy the experience that it gives you and you appreciate that shared experience with your guild. Ultimately, you don't give a fuck who does what.

Change your perspective and look at the community as a whole, the community of the overall game experience from your noob who is playing for the first time and the person who has clocked years. Communities and social online games are built from shared experiences. When your shared experiences are watered down, social constructs become weaker. For example, when you killed the biggest, baddest hardmode boss in the game, you get a personal sense of accomplishment. When someone kills the same boss in LFR are both of your experiences the same? You just spent weeks, months gearing up, learning strats, organizing your guild and working towards that goal. That other person logged in one night and did the same thing as you did. That experience is no where near the same thing at all.

In the end, there is no wrong answer here. There are pros and cons. WOW's pros is everyone has more content to do. The con is that you lose a sense of shared experience and the community becomes more and more diminished because of it.

Here's the thing though, Blizzard has made a conscious decision to keep LFR in the game as "casual" content. With LFR, I had 3 months of MOP content to consume as a casual (like I said, my days of hardcore MMOs are over between family, work and my master's degree program). Without LFR I'd have been done in a month.

If Blizzard decides to remove LFR, they need something in place for the casual crowd because, like it or not, they make up 90% (plus) of the game's population. That's where Blizzard is failing right now. They're not introducing this casual content to keep those players happy and busy while releasing raids for the hardcore crowd. It's easier and less expensive for them to offer a watered down LFR experience than to actually go create something new and engaging for players to consume. They've gone expansions and patch cycles where they've catered to the hardcore and others where they've catered to the casual. Right now they're not catering to either group and are simply in retention mode.

And it doesn't help that this game is going on 10 years old which means that the game's basic framework is already being pushed nearly to the limit.

Dumb conversation, they're not going to go backwards. LFR is fine for what it is, if you're looking for long term in WoW you missed the boat. WoW is a 1-2 month hit & quit.

Paragon, Method, Blood Legion, vodka (no longer)...the progression leaders always have, or had, large traffic to their sites, Youtube channels, video feeds.

Instead most of you guys log in daily to grind your fucking hamster pellets and have forgotten log ago why you even played to begin with. I enjoyed MMORPG's for the whole "You are in our world now" type of experience and WOW lost that somewhere over the last 8 years. You can see it by how many people are longing for that in almost every new MMORPG thread on this forum. But keep telling yourself that Version_04 of RehashedMob_8 is the real game and everyone else is missing the point.
I think raids being the only real path of progression combined with the ability to consistently raid several days every week was a huge design flaw. Not many people can grind out raids several days a week for years without them feeling like work.

^ Most would say that "you didn't earn the right to content then." I myself am torn on this. These games charge a lot of money and, despite what you might think, "denial of service" is a big deal. LFR solved that, perhaps inelegantly. Do I think having a "scary nighttime" is denial? Fuck no. But walling off content based on time? Starting to get slippery depending on the game design. Without gear resets, you might have a point to it. With gear resets, LFR is a good compromise.

Fuck, I just play wow now because I actually sorta enjoy the tongue in cheek LOLore. The game has some personality and they can tell a good Harry Potter level complexity yarn. Tolkien/Jordan...or even Martin it is not.

I don't get it... I never beat Bowser (for example, of course I did) in original Mario. Did Nintendo deny my service because I didn't put enough time in?
