Guild housing is just individual player housing, except one guy gets to be decorator for dozens of people lol

Yea, but there is usually some sort of recall mechanism, so it's a place for people to gather. And other games add more places to put things, so portals or other stuff. Basically becomes town for the guild, if it's implemented well. Otherwise I agree it's just a dumb decoration place.

If they put some actual functionality with it, it will do the same thing as FFXIV and become a hub for RPer's and degenerates. I would like to see them add functionality that would be like Warframes guild housing - but I seriously doubt we'll ever see a resurgence in guild affiliated skills and recipes. That whole system seems to be a forgotten stepchild.

BoozeCube BoozeCube The housing expansion isnt even the next expansion coming out. Midnight, the expansions name, is after the next one. So we're talking 3 and a half to 5 years from now. Who knows what tf we'll be playing by that point, if we're playing games at all. Them dropping a teaser for it is insanely early and ... seems out of touch.

This sums up WoW development pretty well. Need some "never seen before" expansion feature to print on the box.

The other pillars seem to be "enshittification to support some stupid esport" and "design by metrics to increase MAU/DAU"

No one cares about WoW housing in 2024 and beyond.

There was a time there was a demand for it, but players have had access for too long to other games housing systems. It's been there, done that.

Core players can't even pretend to give a shit about it.

If they are spending all these resources on housing, the rest of the expansion is going to be pretty bad. It's going to suffer from a lack of content.

Just look at how half-baked Delves are despite the rest of the game offering no other feature.

Housing is another excuse to phone it in.

This seems to be the future. Add a mediocre 'permanent' feature each expac, so they can just copy/paste literally everything else and have interns churn it out.

Player housing will suck if it doesn't have trade skills to support it.

WoW at this point has probably no sustainable core player audience anymore. Blizzard found out the hard way that the core player audience (below what you usually call "hard core", think mythic raiders etc.) are not "lifers".

They buy an expansion, play for one to three months (depending on how good the expansion is) and quickly cancel once they feel satisfied. Maybe they'll come back for another season--most likely the last season, in preparation of the next expansion. But that's it. As homework, count the people in this thread that follow this exact pattern.

This is why you get those "subscribe for 6/12 months and get a free mount" promotions. Which just shows that Blizzard is clueless, because their core audience is not interested in what 4chan calls "mountmogcheevos". They want content instead of ticking off boxes with checkmarks.

The housing system will most likely fail, because Blizzard will either half-ass it, or it will be an endless farm. Maybe WoW will get a new profession like "carpenter" out of it, but most core players at this point will not maintain their subscription just for this. Once they hit a limit to their character progression they are done, and so is their money.

Nowadays you can keep up with your guild via Discord just fine (if you enjoy their company) without paying Blizzard money.

I don't think the housing system will fail. It will just be mid. Expect big gold sinks, promises of going back into past expacs for housing decorations but nothing except a few bundles of RMT in the blizz store, only a couple house variations, little to no utility, etc. Just like how warbands was the greatest thing ever and they're going to be able to make reps and everything account wide. Except it's been several patches now and they haven't added a single one.

Make it like farmville and garrison and give it gathering nodes and maybe some mission table shit and I will be back.

WoW can't have mid feature after mid feature, especially not after FFXIV made clear that WoW isn't invulnerable, and things like the Riot MMO loom on the horizon, and people start to cling to the AoC hype.

The internal metric at Blizzard seems to be "how many players (= accounts) engage with the system regularly". By that metric even raids are not worth developing, as only a single digit percent (I think it was 3% or so) even raid at least normal mode once per month. In contrast, mission tables are a huge success, so we clearly need more of those. This is what "designing by metrics" gives you.

What Blizzard does not seem to grasp it that housing at its core is a very social system. No one cares about their own house long term if they can't show it off to other people, or use it for guild/RP purposes. Look at FFXIV how even a buggy and hard to use system can be used for night clubs and jumping puzzles.

So, it'll be probably doomed to fail, because Blizzard has killed social interaction in WoW and replaced it with esport toxicity. Blizzard is the epitome of "my way or the highway" and "no fun allowed."

A finger on the monkey's paw curls.

Because of the developers coming from SOE, you get another version of Free Realms.

The way to do housing is to copy EQ2. I was always helping a guildie farm some dungeon for shinies to get furniture. We did more of that than actual raiding. They also had guild hall housing.

Wow's housing is going to suck ass and is about 10 years too late.

What the actual fuck? 3-5 years from now? These people are nuts announcing features this early.
