LFR feeds the type of person who wants item progression as their ultimate goal, LFR underminds people who want to raid for a challenge, but have friends who couldn't cut it in a hardcore raid guild. My guild was never world first, but we were always a few months behind the top, with the modern 3 progression list, LFR is boring, Normals are now only 6-7 fights instead of 10+ And the heroics are generally so hard that they are beyond my group of friends ability to do, after 7+ years of raiding with them the fights we can't do without roster changes, benchings and recruitings has just grown - grown to the point where the guild just went away. The raid nights were no longer fun. This type of guild fell through the cracks hard. I'm sure we weren't the bulk of subscribers, but I just can't get interested in the current design, especially reputations, you can't just be a raider in WoW anymore. I don't necessarily want it to go back, it wouldn't matter to me at this point regardless. But their design did cost them a type of guild, because the game marginalized them a great deal.
