I still believe this and so should you. It is our National duty as Americans to help these children. Let's show the world we don't just give the stick we still extend our hand.
Dynamics during the dawn of the 20th century are just a whee it different from the dawn of the 21st century.

I mean the funny bit to me is the vaunted 'social utopias' of Europe everyone wants to emulate in other areas (healthcare, elder care, infrastructure, welfare, whatever) have some pretty seriously fucked up or severe immigration laws. But suddenly it's a travesty if we want to enforce them in this country.

Don't get me wrong, comprehensive immigration reform should be:
1) seal borders tight
2) ship people home after earn-your-status program that rolls into
3) expanding standard immigration channels

Immigration is very important to America, but it seems the three most common stances both from individuals and groups/the media are either "blah blah 19th century" (dumb), "blah blah look at more cultured countries" (misinformed) or "blah blah shoot them all" (dumb).

I don't know why it's so difficult to have a practical discussion about immigration. It's like trying to talk about guns or religion.

NIMBY

Democrat Maryland Governor - "Don't send them to Maryland"
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com...ite/?hpt=hp_t2
I know that National Guard Reserve spot he's talking about, unless they're housing only 10-20 people it's not big enough of a spot for anything there without a SHITLOAD of renovation. (And note, who the hell calls Westminster "Western Maryland" anymore - there's a reason Western Maryland College is McDaniel College now - because Westminster isn't remotely Western Maryland [/Westminsterraisedrant off])

Not to mention with one of the biggest Wal-Mart's in the county across the street from it, I'm sure that would be setting up fun times.

And note, he's not opposed to other places just that one, which I agree is ludicrous because it's TINY: "A senior O'Malley administration official confirmed the conversation took place. But the official stressed O'Malley did not reject the idea of temporarily housing some of the children in other parts of the state."

50 Million for 600 beds! Using my common core math, that works out to about $83k per person! What a fucking deal!!!! Thanks Obama!!

Just for shits and giggles, per Expediahttp://www.expedia.com/Flights-Searc...my&mode=search
Departing from Houston, one way to Mexico City, tickets average for around $300 bucks. That means for the same $50 million, you could fly about 166k illegals back home.
So we're assuming that each room will be used by one person ever and that zero dollars of the contract is going towards paying the salaries for the staff which were stated to range from $20-45/hr? Thanks for that amazing insight.

Also almost none of these people are coming from Mexico, they're coming THROUGH Mexico - might want to check on Argentina and the like. And don't forget a second ticket for their escort.

Its on the bubble at least. What do you consider the cut off for western Maryland?

On which post, you didn't quote. If it's the second - I'm fine on shipping them back, it's my preferred answer personally since it limits LONGTERM costs - but there's a ton more math involved than what he did was my point. (Note: My opinion will change if the UN officially declares them refugees and gives us the financial support that the UN kicks in for refugees since we wouldn't be footing the bill exclusively then plus that would be an indicator that stuff is too terrible for them to return to)

You know, the entire reason I changed my sig is because of cases like this. (And I don't mind being nitpicked FYI)

If it's the first - O'Malley is fine with the potential for other sites - so it's not really "NIMBY" - it's "Not in that part of my backyard, over here is available though".

Maybe we can trade some of them for that dumbass Marine still down there in jail.

I think he is an idiot and deserves no sympathy but where is the quid pro quo here?

I think Frederick County is fair. Westminster still on the bubble to me, I've known people in Carroll County who consider it western Maryland. You said yourself they did once have the college named that!
True, we are a weird state when it comes to how some people call East/West here - after all, one foot into Cecil County to some people is the "Eastern Shore" even counting North East/Easton parts that are hours from any shore. And frankly they're within an hour of Baltimore which is absolutely Central MD.

Cecil County is not the eastern shore. Its sort of a no man's land, doesn't really fit any other part of the state. Its more like the northern Delaware/Wilmington/Philly suburbs area of MD.

I'd agree, but that doesn't stop some people from calling it that. (I do love Cecil County though, before I decided to leave the state had a nice house in North East all scoped out - part of that little community on the south side of Turkey Point State Park - literally ZERO access except by water or through the park)

It's because if you're a leftist radical, you'll be worshiped by the leftists and all right wing radicals will call you crazy. If you're a right wing radical, you'll be worshiped by the right wing, and all the leftist radicals will call you crazy. If you're in the middle, no one even listens to what you have to say, because everyone calls you crazy.

There's no room for a middle in todays politics.

Another part of the problem is that people that don't live in or near a border state don't really understand the situation well and speak from ignorance. People here (in Michigan) knew a few illegal Mexican families and think they're experiencing the same problems as someone in say, Phoenix.

This is true. I had to drive a guy who was here on business to an offsite facility in south-central Phoenix from Scottsdale. He was shocked to see groups of 10 illegal day labors standing around all over the place near the industrial parks.

From what I see here is that white people are begging for money on every on and off ramp and Circle K and the Brown people are actually working.
