Oh so, we're going to teach kids to go back and end the war on drugs? Ok, awesome analogy then, I stand corrected.

And on refugees - from what I'm seeing from some refugee originization's FAQ, 60% of refugees try to find their way home within a decade. Only 40% actively try to get citizenship. (Which of course is easier if you're refugee status than most other times)

These kids arent even refugees either. Another PC term instead of calling them what they are, illegal immigrants.

noun
noun: refugee; plural noun: refugees

a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.
Really? They're not refugees? They coming from Club Med and I missed it? No they're coming from countries that are incredibly volatile and violent right now. (ESCAPE WAR)

Or the more in depth UN Refugee description (who officially declares refugee or not generally):

Who is a refugee?
A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries.
(Not to mention the two aren't mutually exclusive - you can have illegal immigrant refugees and you can have refugees that are 100% legal [although any illegal immigrant refugee will likely segway into legal ones if they follow the appropriate channels])

Well shit an ambiguous definition as that you can label many Americans as refugees. Certainly all of Mexico fits that criteria.

Ambiguous? Most of Mexico? Have you even been outside of this country, dipshit? Most of Mexico there's no fear for one's life - these South American nations there's an immediate risk to people's lives on a large scale.

I guarantee if I went around and told 20 complete strangers I was going to Mexico for one group and going to Panama to another - I can guarantee I'd get almost zero "OMG, be careful" responses for Mexico, and tons for Panama. The danger between the two isn't remotely equal.

See that important "a well-founded fear" in the UN definition. Not just manufactured or illogical fear - fear that has a realistic foundation.

But please, keep slurping Limbaugh's ass.

How sheltered of a life do you live exactly?

And yet the US State Department has a travel warning for Mexico and not Panama... I dunno who you talk to, but those are not the responses I'd get.

Sorry, I thought Panama was one of the 3. El Salvador, Colombia, and Honduras.

But risk to their own is minimal. Those warnings are generally limited to backwaters tourists don't go if you read the listing. Easy to avoid backwaters in a gigantic nation, hard to in a teensy one.

Right now the daily rate of incidents in Mexico is about the same as each of those MUCH SMALLER nations even though they've got a tiny population in comparison. (not similar per capita, similar period)

On being "sheltered", been to Mexico twice in the past decade or so. (both resort and touring) Never got comments from people about my safety, nor did I ever see anything scarier than The Block in Baltimore. (which isn't that scary, scariest bit of town though) Have seen comments when other folks were taking trips into South America proper though.

Have you been to Mexico?
I have been to Mexico at least a 100 different times but that isn't anything special considering I live 90 minutes from Mexico driving the speed limit. The only time I ever feared for my life while in Mexico was after drinking a glass of tea with a meal.

That is the funny thing with my trips - I've got a terribly sensitive GI tract - and even eating as part of the tourism thing and random stops around, I think my GI was better there than it usually is at home.

(To be honest in the nations I've toured, which is a few - only Egypt and India have met the stereotyping you tend to see on TV - and for Egypt I think that was just bad luck that our tour was planned for a site that armed militants were protesting at or whatever, looking at similar incidents afterwards didn't even seem common. India however I did see tons of poor in alleys and the such though - that one seemed 100% legit - still a wonderful nation though, but depressing if you pay too much attention to that stuff)

Put me down for reducing aid for these countries if we're going to continue to take in their citizens in such a manner. Either that or they carve us a chunk of land. It's getting out of hand and we just can't afford to keep dumping money around the world with all the issues we have at home. We gave Honduras like 50 millions last year.. We give them money every year. At some point we need to try another approach.

We've got DOD contracts on campus that get more money than that by themselves, and they only have starving grad assistants, not a starving nation.

Think of it this way: It's a fucking bribe.

This is how many we're getting with the bribe. Wanna guess if that number will go up or if it will go down proportional to our bribe? Cause it will do one or the other.

50 million sounds like a lot. And honestly, 50 million is a lot. I wonder how long it takes for our military to spend 50 million dollars on toilet paper.

Nah bro, Mexico was off limits when I was stationed in San Diego and I have zero desire to go there now.
Amusing, so you only have the media's portrayal to base your opinion on. Don't you usually criticize the media portrayal of things being of limited accuracy?

A bribe or extortion?

Are you implying there is a grand conspiracy to make Mexico look like a shithole when its not? Numbers dont lie. Im sure Mexico is fairly safe in the tourisity areas or the resort compounds(and im sure the same can be said for central american countries too), but outside those two areas its crime rates are significantly higher than the US and closer to Central America.
