Smedley is a terrible CEO which is why I advocated for his firing on fohguild to the point where I sent a letter to Andrew House noting that in any other industry Smedley would have been fired for taking the #1 product of that industry and turning it into an also-ran. I am sure House roundfiled that letter, whatever. I enjoy your rants Ut, but you're an idiot if you think the problems at SOE don't include Smed. The bullshit that Smedley gets is bullshit. Christ, last email we talked about how much we both loved Bioshock infinite.
Yeah. Definitely trolling by stating an opinion backed by experience and 99% of the time logical discussion/concepts. I haven't said the game is going to blow or anything even close to it. What I have said is that the chance the game is exactly like EQ1 but "better" is basically zero, since lots of things have happened since EQ1 came out. I've also qualified why I feel that is the case. On top of that, I've speculated directly upon current trends/SOE game decisions to come up with concepts that might be used in the game given the use of buzzwords and ideas they have put forward. I don't troll, Dear Friend. I illuminate. But please, feel free to quote anything you feel is directly trolling. The records there bro see eq1. Your the biggest troll on this board no one gives a shit about your expectations of it sucking every post. Every time I hit this forum to see if theres any new news ur on here spilling how much its gona blow qft.
That's why it is important to play the hell out of EQN from the get-go if it is any good. Because it will eventually turn to crap. The center can not hold, things fall apart. It doesn't matter if he is telling the truth about his connections. At the very least, his cynical view is correct. Once EQ and w/e else was out at the time started raking in the cash, the business side kicked in and it turned into the dollar signs above all else. Above the players, above the games. It's called business. That mindset has caused the industry to make a shit ton of money. The problem isn't the companies, its the customers.
Here is your boss... You fuck.

Subject: Re: News Today
When it's ready. We blew the game up the first 2 times because we weren't happy that we were moving things forward enough. Now we are in spades.
I wont post the rest because I promised. Now shut the fuck up you little bitch.
My point there was that while publishers want to put in the most "shoot first" content, they also will negate the content that costs but gives life to the game.Hold up... I'm not sure what that means. Putting in pop culture Easter Eggs that appeal to 40 year olds and making a profit off of it (duh) makes games great? How does this philosophy relate to what should be (and apparently is not) going on at EQnext?
Plz explain.
That is totally fine Grim1. And yes, games are subjective. Its only up to you if you want to play it or not. Me? I just call out the bullshit.Too much inside baseball UT. Sorry, but I tend to glaze over your long posts. You may be right about the details, and given your history and the history of mmos, probably are. But all I care about is if I actually enjoy the game. And only I can decide that.
Nice post, speaking seriously for a moment, video games are as subject to the second system effect as any software product. Both EQ2 and Vanguard are perfect examples of the second system effect in action. Since all the important developers seem to have already gotten their "second system" out of the way, it is not unreasonable to be optimistic towards EQN. As always, past performance is no guarantee of future success. When greatness happens it is in spite of all the factors you rail against. It is rare to be sure, but it does happen and is part of the human experience you will forever be denied. Because all you care about is shitting on the people who try, even after they have failed. The people who try are the people who inspire me. The people who live on the evertrain of predictable failure, I just pity.
I'd go with combat. An interesting living world with crappy combat gets you some kind of fantasy Second Life.I agree that an intesting, living world is the most important aspect of an MMORPG.
The effort put into that makes a game from a design point of view. When you make a game, you have to fight the publisher (Who backs you financially) They may ask you, (In pre-production) "Why do you want to do all these things when a player may not see it, or even play through it??" And then you have to explain through the call of duty dude that those little things make the game... but... they don't believe you. Because that person greenlighting your $12 million thinks you should be concentrating on Multiplayer skins on the cash shop and 4 maps to be released later, instead. And then you have a guy with enough clout like Ken Levine to say Fuck you, I made you money in the past, trust me.... Nods of heads across the table.... And thank Christ... we have something that sold over 4 million copies * Without * co-op or multiplayer.Hold up... I'm not sure what that means. Shoulda said 'most interesting thing to me'. I didn't ever give a crap about the combat. It's generally a means to an end for me. Only reason I ever really play MMOs is to become super wealthy playing the trading game. Used to sit in EC for entire 4-6hour sessions playing the market.I'd go with combat. Reminds me of a buddy of mine named Bob. I think he was similarly focused in WoW and EQ. Was never much of a trader myself.Shoulda said 'most interesting thing to me'. The LOTRO problem: cool world, the epic questlines were interesting (though the myriad of kill 10 x quests weren't) but the combat was pure meh.Mechanics are the backbone. Combat being the most "visual" side of the mechanics. The world may suck you in initially, but the mechanics are what keep you in. Otherwise yeah, Second Life: Slightly Less Trannies. Community can do a lot to keep you involved as well, but it gets pretty hard to get into the social aspect if the gameplay aspect is balls and other games offer better gameplay.
