Everyone has had this.

The only thing I've seen that is rare is actual commericials on TV, and I have only ever seen WoW do it(MMO wise). Otherwise most major MMOs(Made by well known studios or pushed by big publisers) are all over gaming sites, in ads everywhere and at as many conventions as they can.
Yup.. I was just saying that EQ probably feels if their Facebook and Twitter is working well and they have decent hype among their fans, they probably are not too concerned with marketing. They pretty much have all the major social meeting outlets founded. I'm sure they'll be in magazines and have a lot of pushes with gaming sites and media circles too.

Wow has weather. Snow and rain depending on the zone. The night cycle was subtle to non-existent unless you looked up. Some subtle shading but yeah not dark at all.
Do they have changing weather now? That'd be nice. I remember it being planned when I quit but never heard about it's implementation. If you mean static "in this zone or area it rains all the time" then that's not quite what I mean by weather. And if that's the case then GW2 or TOR do that too.

~talks about WoW night cycle not being dark enough~
Well that's like, your opinion. And I agree that WoW could've been darker at night. I'm no lore expert maybe Azeroth has like 15 moons reflecting the sun at every hour during the night, ask Metzen.

But at least WoW did have a day/night cycle... contrast that with a recent 100mill+ release like TOR that didnt bother itself with such mundane details. Sunset on Tatooine and tusken coming out at night? Not in our game, we have perpetual noon. That's an actual bottom of the barrel no-effort example.

I definitely remember going through Kith together with a friend with our lowbies. I hope we get areas like that back.

Once the reveal happens in a few days, marketing will take care of itself. It will be on the front page of every MMO site, and no doubt have some decent entries in more general gaming sites with the flood gates of information, screenshots, and if we are to assume a beta to follow shortly after, and no barrier for entry (dislike the f2p model personally, but it has advantages in this regard) . I'm interested to see what the marketing for the PS4 version will be like, if you've seen the current PS4 commercial with a wide array of characters running around many have concluded that the dragon is representative of EQN, so who knows, we could see a sequel to the "Time to slay the dragon" marketing gimmick.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkjfQat27Mo

Was thinking this while watching the Greatness Awaits video again, what are the odds that we'll see EQNext revealed through a cinematic marketing video?

Some zones have rain more frequently but its not static. It will rain sometimes in stv and sometimes its not. I think snow in winterspring is the same.

I do have another quest that I think was addressed some time ago... We know this is an alternate or parallel timeline/universe but just how familiar will the zones be to the long time player? We will going to see the same starting cities and zone progressions? Or are we going to just see moments of familiar locations? I was curious how they are going to mesh the old with the new (if any new at all)

When I tried it.... It is not too dark. It is realistic. I have to use light spells (never used a single one in the 80 hours I had on the PS3 version), torches, etc. Lighting with that mod is infinitely better than the standard one. Nights suddenly felt dangerous. Also installed the sound mods and it is a new game. World is far more alive than it used to be. EQ had that as default.
For some reason that reminds me of Tomb of Giants from Dark Souls. I like being forced to use a light device, and making choices. That game had such amazing atmosphere, and really is the opposite of the 'stylized' cartoony graphics look.

I run the same mods on Skyrim and they make a world of difference. They even run decently on my laptop which is nice. Environment is so important to immersion. If you combined the live world feel of Skyrim with it's advanced mods with the feel and danger of Dark Souls, you really would have the perfect setting for my type of MMORPG.

Wonder if they'll hire Blur (I think that's who it is, the company that did WHO's too) to make them some cinematics for this one. The ones they did for DCUO were great.

By releasing PS2 on PS4 and having EQN ready not too far behind, SOE will finally be pulling their weight with the console business. I can see PS2 coming at/near the PS4 launch and EQN coming a few months later.

Both should greatly help drive sales of the machine. You buy a PS4, you get a "free" FPS and a "free" RPG.

Also relevant is the news that the Player Studio on PS2 will be included in the PS4 version:http://www.vg247.com/2013/07/30/plan...h-ps4-version/

Actually from what I remember Planetside 2 actually ran pretty fucking great from the start. I dont know WTF you guys are taking about. I only had an i5 2500K with a 5850 at the time but I remember being in some battles so fucking big that I was never a part of in any game in the past and since. I actually was amazed that the technology actually could keep track of all those people, vehicles, explosions, the millions of bullets at the same time and still run smooth.
Later, a few months in they even improved this further.

Also its not a single threaded game, they just could not make it run stable on more than 2 cores if I remember right.

That is what I want too. EQ had that somewhat. It had the first person view as the main format, which gave a far more claustrophobic and initmate feel to the world than third person. Then you had the danger of dying along with not wanting to, not seen in a game since until Demon/Dark souls.

As I have said earlier, I think the time has come to where enough people in the west have tried Dark Souls, and enjoyed it, to where you can again implement a punishing death penalty without people freaking out. Even though the vast majority of todays mmo players have never tried EQ, the ideas behind EQ are now popular again, due to games like Dark Souls. With no danger comes no reward. We have discovered that now due to a decade of games having little to no danger at all in them. Bring back the possaiblity of seeing "you have died" again, along with the feeling of not wanting to (loss of souls/exp). Take Skyrim as an example. You need to mod it to make it dangerous. Deadlier dragons, more monsters, etc. Vanilla Skyrim on adept is a joke. The fact that people wanted a harder game, to mod it, and complain about the ease of it so much that they added the lengedary difficulty, shows that EQN could still be a success with a death system that is more than "oh look at your pretty little ghost that you need to run back to your corpse with! Aww, the world is pretty and blue! Shiny happy people !!!"

People are not shiny (unless from Firefly) and the world is not happy. Only people who believe so are kids and utterly naive people who have never stepped outside their sheltered suburbia. Neither of those should be the target demographic being catered to in the making of a mmo. There are enough games out there to give you that "oh I just want an easy relaxing stress free game after work" feeling. Making an entire mmo on that formula seems so.... wasted. I dunno, immersion is a word that is overused, but how is it even possible to be immersed in a world that is so unrealistic that even death is pointless? Two biggest fears people have, death and public speaking. Neither which are a consern in most mmos today. Solo with no fear of death. Bleh.

This has always bugged me when companies skimp on the world aspects of Day/Night/Weather. If EQ can do it in 1999, everyone should be able to have done it in the last 10+ years of game launches.

I remember Blizzard saying they waited on this to get it right (supposedly adding some play mechanics to it as well) and well, there isn't any reason after weather came out why it just wasn't in the game to begin with.

Back to EQ Next - Die-Hard EQ players from the past that love the difficulty of corpse runs and XP Loss will love their Hardcore Server.

The one thing that I kinda want to see 'make a come back' (in general mmo terms), and what EQ had to begin with, was the text field input from players. I am not talking about the highlighted text that any 5 year old could just regurgitate back to the npc, but the hidden triggers learned from following clues and such from other quests. The one I remember that I always thought was really cool was when you spoke to some innkeeper about an npc you were looking for. That caused him to actually spawn in one of the upstairs rooms and had the innkeeper mention that he was up there (it has been so long I could have the specifics off, but you get my point). Then the target npc would start a quest. Everything just seems like it is handed to you on a silver plate anymore.

I bet those servers would be pretty popular actually
