Did you really pick a woman up at her house and then drive somewhere together for your first date?

The door test was a thing in the 80s and 90s but nowadays everyone has a car with remote lock/unlock. You can't really use it as a selfish test, pretty much no one use their key to unlock the door and if somehow you're using an old car that still requires it, odds are the girl won't even be aware the driver door is still locked after you let her in on the passenger side.

You know what... I don't know what I would do if I got out of my car and the woman remained inside. I don't think I would even catch on to that. She'd just be sitting there and I'd already be inside the bar/restaurant/whatever wondering where the fuck she was.

You seriously have never been on a date where she sits there waiting for you to open her door? I mean it isn't totally common, but a lot of chicks here do that, especially if they're dolled up and you're going somewhere fancy. I had one nightmare date where I parked the car a block away from the restaurant (because I avoid valet if I can) and she whined that she had to walk a block in 5" heels and should have just dropped her off at the restaurant first.. I mean, we're literally talking maybe 500 feet or so..

My wife leans over and cracks my door for me and always has. It serves two purposes, she shows appreciation for me opening her door and she also gives me a good cleavage shot. She has always known just what she is doing with that move.

If you are just starting dating a girl, you always take the valet unless you want to look like an asswipe.
Yeah, it's not a money issue for me but the fact that I've had two cars damaged in my life by valet drivers (some cant drive stick properly), and you have zero fucking recourse against them. I'll do it if I have no choice, but if there's parking just a block away..

Oh I fucking hate valet for all the reasons. Just saying if you are just starting dating, you just got to suck that shit up.

Yea life down south is way different than up here in New England. I'm fairly certain I've never been in a situation where a woman waited for me to come around to open the door for her. I think I would get upset if she did in fact. You wanna live like it's still 1950 and deal with all the stupid traditional gender roles that are associated with that time frame? I certainly don't.

I would imagine a person who just saw another person have to unlock the passenger door would not be so obtuse as to not at least check on the driver door and be considerate enough to unlock it. If they were unobservant and then at least apologetic that would be OK, but if just self centered and not apologetic, then I would release the person back to the wild where they belong.

Having come from the North, it is definitely much different-- women are generally a lot more laid back. Down here a lot of them want all the gallant chivalry shit (a "real man" they call it), but then segue into how they're a "modern woman" that can't boil water or sew a button. They've basically retained all the traditional gender role behaviors that benefit them, while dispensing with the ones that don't. The hotter they are, the more likely it is for this to be the case.

So, I am of the middle generation of that - I always appreciate someone opening a door for me (and G did that). I also have worked my entire life (from my teen-aged years), learned how to cook at a very early age and my dad taught all his daughters (4 girls, no boys) how to catch and clean a fish, how to change a tire, how to change the oil and lube a chassis (how to cuss while doing those things - but that was inadvertent on his part), how to do simple wiring and simple plumbing. Is it ok then - would you open a door for that type of modern woman? The type of person who was appreciative of kindness and old fashioned manners and who could yet be "modern" in the best senses of the word?

They exist; I just don't know how many of them are under 30...I have a feeling the answer is disappointing.

I always open doors for my wife if we're entering a building or when we're getting into the car. I almost never open the door for her when we get out of the car, only on occasions where she's fixing her makeup or something and I've already had time to get out and walk around. At that point it's more like, "Your makeup is fine, let's go."

We are both 29.

I just don't understand the purpose. What's so special about sitting in the passenger seat of a car like a child waiting for your man to let you out? What is it about the act that makes a woman feel special? I don't get it.

I hold doors for human beings (men or women) when entering buildings and such, that's just polite. The whole car door thing is lost on me though.

Well, to be honest those "modern" skills your dad taught you are self-beneficial because they are useful life skills for either gender, and will empower you to be able to change your own tire rather than waiting for a man to come rescue you. But while I would value/respect that skillset in a girlfriend, it wouldn't be what I'd be looking as reciprocation for her desire to be on the receiving end of traditional gender role treatment. In other words, in return for opening doors, flowers, and other traditional crap, I don't want her to change my tires because I can do that on my own. I look for reciprocation in acts that I am not good at myself, but women traditionally are. Like I had a girlfriend that took it upon herself to get a few orchids for my place, because I needed "some life/color in my home". Or after having procrastinated buying new sheets for my bed, she offers to go hunting for a nice set, saving me from such an annoying duty. If I'm going to play Prince Charming, these are the "traditional" type of things I seek in return.
