I dunno, regular schedule, early bedtime, probably some crafts to do, sounds roughly like a retirement home.
True, but retirement homes aren't full of violent 18-28 year old sociopaths that lift weights all day.

My last job I taught people how to drive forklifts and pallet jacks, how to pick, build, wrap pallets, all that jazz. People spent a week with me before they did any real work.

So I got to know people pretty well after spending a week with them. We hired a few hundred people a year, so I've known a lot of people, from all walks of life.

Couple years ago, we get this guy Clarence. He's probably 60, but that's not uncommon. Things were real rough in the hiring market after covid, sometimes we'd get some old guys in there, and if they were still in decent enough shape, we'd keep them.

So, Clarence is about the nicest guy you could meet. Polite, calm...not very bright, but he was teachable. I got the sense very early on that Clarence had technology problems....things like cell phones and time clocks and shit confused the fuck outta him. But, that's normal for 60 year old dudes, right?

I liked Clarence. I was rooting for him to make it. He was just a decent dude. He'd been there a couple weeks, and he came in early one day and said "hey man, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I just don't think this job is for me. Too hard on my body." Hey man, you ain't disappointing me, I have a lot of respect for you for trying. This is young man's work, and you came in here and gave it hell for a couple weeks, there's nothing wrong with that. I shook his hand and we gathered up his stuff and I walked him out the door.

I get back in and my boss comes back from running a route with a driver and he goes "hey, did you hear about Clarence?" Yeah, I walked him out a few hours ago. "No no..not that."

What then?

Oh, turns out he was on work release. Oh, okay, that's not a huge deal, we've had guys like that before.

"No no. He was in for murder. "

What?

"Yeah, he put a bag over his wife's head and beat her to death with a fucking hammer in like 1997."

What the fuck. I SHOOK THIS DUDES HAND. HE'S BEEN IN THE SAME ROOM WITH ME FOR A FUCKING WEEK. WHEN THE FUCK WERE YOU PLANNING ON TELLING ME THIS SHIT?!?!

Apparently they don't know how he got past the background check. Motherfucker is still listed on the DOC site because he's still active. Was literally just out so he could get a job. And that's also why he had no idea about technology. Fucker hasn't even seen a cell phone before.

I can laugh about it now, but holy shit was I fucking pissed for awhile.

Oh you want a better one?

So guy in coveralls comes into the office. He tells the receptionist he's maintenance, I know all the maintenance guys. I tell him to leave before I call the police. He gets a bit upset and hands me a business card. FBI agent. I tell him to wait here, I go and make some phone calls and verify he's legit. I have him come into my office and chat. He's here to pick up an employee we hired 3 weeks ago.

I ask what he's wanted for, because we just hired him and went through a extensive background check which would include NCIC. He says he's wanted for child abuse and murder, and they suppressed his warrant information hoping he would pop up looking for employment since he skipped town in CA.

So yeah not decades apart just a few weeks... Also another reason why I don't like the FBI. Decided to put my entire office at risk to try and catch a guy (maybe).

Sounds like the plot from an episode of CSI: Miami.

Why stakeout the situation and grab the guy in the parking lot or at his apartment with multiple agents. Nah, pretend you're maintenance to try and grab him by yourself on the work site with bunches of civilians around. Surely someone being arrested on suspicion of murder isn't dangerous.

My grandpa had a guy come into the shop looking for a job. He had a small monkey on his shoulder. Worked there a few weeks and did fine. One day he came in and said he had to quit. Got his last check that day. The next day the FBI showed up looking for him.

I guess since he was only allegedly involved in killing a kid they thought he was fine to be around adults while they searched for him.

I understand it though. Many of these people stayed together because kids or convenience. Things get progressively worse. Resentment builds. They feel trapped so they just continue on until they feel like they've got no escape and wasted so much of their life, and snap. This is exacerbated by the modern flippant view of marriage and social media. Boomers fucking love Facebook. They see everyone else on cruises and at resorts having a good time in retirement, meanwhile they are trapped by a 3% mortgage with just social security with a spouse they hate and work a part time job to get by.

I can see that. I used to know a couple whose lives went from fine to bad to worse to really bad. They are at the point in their lives when they should be hitting prime earning years, but they fucked everything away. No house, no careers, no real retirement. They are going to have to work until they drop dead at shitty starter jobs with shitty health benefits.

What's the point of even bothering? They have nothing to look forward to, and never will.

I can see one of them popping at some point. One time he let it slip that he blamed his failures on his wife, and this was before things got really bad. What's worse is he still thinks he is smarter and better than everyone else, despite ample evidence to the contrary. I know he has envy issues made worse by self medicating. I hear tell he's been getting weirder by the year, because even the deepest delusions let the truth out every now and then. Those delusions have to be stacked high to tipping by now.

Not saying its understandable or anything, but
Think back to the first time the chick you're with did that annoying thing she does. It was no big deal, you laughed it off.
Then compare that with when she did it again, last week, for the hundredth time.

Now imagine shes been doing that thing for 50 fucking years, she doesnt even pretend not to do that annoying thing anymore, and gets annoyed at you for even noticing it.

I'm kind of surprised there arent more old spouse murders, and am always sincerely impressed with the multi decade marriages.

Wait, guy I know of murdered his wife of 50 years as well. Something in the water?

The men voted for Trump, the women were libshits, the men got tired of being yelled at histrionically for destroying democracy?

That's seriously wild that two of you guys have close contacts who both murdered their wives of 50 years though.

The vast majority of spousal abuse from women goes completely unreported, for understandably human reasons. Entirely possible.

My parents are coming up on 40 years married. So I guess I've got 10 years before I see my dad's resentment come out.

(These last two pages are wild af.)

So did these dudes try to make it look like an accident or something? Or did they just turn themselves in and go "I did it, take me to prison"?
